My (new to me) Garmin 696 can't seem to load map updates using the SD Card method and the USB process, for some unknown reason, appears to be disabled.

When I received this GPS it had O/S verion 6.20 and a database which expired in 2015. It already had a 4GB SD Card in the slot with, what was then, the latest map update files on it.

First I tried to update the O/S to the latest available version 7.80. I went to fly.garmin.com on my Windows 7 PC downloaded and installed the applications and plugins, as directed and managed to install E:\Garmin\gupdate.gcd. However, when I inserted the SD card into the slot on the 696, nothing happened. I tried inserting it power off, power on, power on eject then reinsert. Nothing.

Ok, so I return the fly.garmin.com web site and find there is a legacy method, using the USB cable. Again I followed the directions, downloaded the drivers and managed to update my 696 O/S to 7.80 via USB successfully. :D

Filled with enthusiasm and confidence I then went back to fly.garmin.com and purchased the US database updates. I downloaded the self extracting archive j696-us-2005.exe and ran it. Once again, it asked for the path to the SD card. I proceeded and it placed several files on the SD Card, most notably E:\ldr_sys\avtn_db.bin and E:\feat_unlk.dat. This time when I powered up the 696 and inserted the SD Card, it would briefly say "Please wait...", spin the circle of dots and then do nothing.

Arrgghh, ok, go back to the web site and follow the instructions for USB update, which still exist. I installed an IE plugin called CommunicatorPlugin_420.exe and proceeded to follow the instructions. I was given a Unit ID and Unlock Code to use with the TaoWizard. But, even though Step 2 says "Connect to the Device" the downloaded .exe would ONLY update an SD Card, not the device.

Garmin Support - why was this USB update option disabled even though the Web site said it is an alternate method?:bang::bang::bang:

So it looks like I am screwed! Not only did I buy a GPS which can't be updated to the current database, the cost to have it repaired, even if Garmin will still repair it, far exceeds what the device is worth.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I have already tried multiple SD cards. 2Gb and 4Gb. They have been reformatted FAT32 both quick and full. The files downloaded from Garmin appear when viewed on the PC. I've tried the power on with the Joy Stick pressed in and it says "Loading..." for about 2 seconds and then just boots up without loading the new database.

One thought that occured to me, which is just a SWAG, is that I'm only updating the US Navigation and not the whole set (thank goodness as I only threw away $32 and not $149). Could the 696 be committed to only updating what it already has and not a single element?

I am so furious that an update method, previously available, has been discontinued and now I am stuck with an out of date GPS, when I purposely verified database support before buying it.

Will I buy Garmin again? How does that old saying go "Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me"

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Edit: After a rather lengthy call with Garmin Aviation Support, where we tried, via remote to my PC and then logical steps, with multiple SD Cards, to determine the problem with the 696, I was offered a refund for my database purchase. The SD reader in the 696 is INOP, and can no longer be fixed at any cost. It is unfortunate that USB updates were discontinued due to unreliability and the potential software corruption that can occur doing an "update in place". At least, even if potentially harmful, I would have risked trying it. But my faith in Garmin has been restored by the great customer service I received on this rather dated GPS

Garmin GPSMAP 695

Discontinued. Browse our selection of other great aviation units >>

With features that focus on aviation-only navigation and mapping, GPSMAP 695 is Garmin’s ultimate portable MFD. Similar to the 696, the GPSMAP 695 comes with a large screen and detailed electronic charts — minus XM compatibility — at a price you’ll love.

See the Big Picture

The GPSMAP 695’s bright 7-inch diagonal high-definition sunlight-readable display makes detailed mapping easy to see day or night — you can even view an entire approach plate on the large-format display. For easy operation, the bezel around the screen includes soft keys and a joystick control. And with a fast 5 Hz GPS update rate, the 695 renders graphics and presents flight data smoothly and continuously.

No Chart? No Problem.

With the addition of IFR map mode, Garmin FliteCharts® and ChartView™, the GPSMAP 695 provides key functions of a Class 1/Class 2 electronic flight bag (EFB), reducing the use of paper charts in the cockpit. When in IFR map mode, the 695 can display victor airways, jet routes, minimum enroute altitudes and leg distance, much like what’s found on traditional enroute charts. With geo-referenced FliteCharts, you can quickly find and view all U.S. AeroNav Services, standard terminal arrival routes (STARs), approach charts and airport diagrams. For pilots who prefer Jeppesen charts and diagrams, Garmin also offers ChartView. The ChartView service utilizes Jeppesen’s extensive library to provide global geo-referenced charting capabilities (Chartview activation instructions).

Enhance Situational Awareness

The GPSMAP 695 features a high-resolution terrain page showing hazards relative to your altitude and a vertical profile of terrain along your route of flight. It comes with a built-in Jeppesen database, and an Americas, Atlantic or Pacific terrain database. It also includes an obstacles database for the U.S. or Europe. Using this information, the 695 displays your flight route over contour terrain mapping. With information from the terrain and obstacles databases, the 695 monitors your current position in relation to surrounding terrain to provide alerts. You can even customize your own minimum clearance levels to receive terrain cautions. The 695 also comes with a realistic “view from space” satellite imagery basemap.

Like other portable Garmin devices, the 695 includes the following enhanced aviation databases:

  • Garmin SafeTaxi®
Provides detailed taxiway diagrams and position information for over 850 U.S. airports. Preloaded on the unit, this information helps you navigate unfamiliar airports with confidence and shows your aircraft’s exact position on the field.

  • AOPA Airport Directory
Offers detailed information for over 5,300 U.S. airports, along with the names and phone numbers of thousands of FBOs. Easily look up taxi services, plan an overnight, and choose fuel stops, plus find ground transportation, lodging, restaurants, local attractions and more.

  • Private Airports and Heliports
Provides data on private airports and heliports throughout U.S. and Europe, and materially expands your list of navigation and emergency "nearest" options.

Receive Altitude-Sensitive Alerts

When in the air, Garmin’s new Smart Airspace™ feature makes it easier than ever to identify what airspace lies ahead. Smart Airspace automatically highlights airspace close to your current altitude and de-emphasizes airspace away from the current altitude, which gives you increased situational awareness.

Expand Your Portable

The GPSMAP 695 includes an SD card slot for extra memory and updates. Keep track of the databases on your GPSMAP 695 through www.fly.garmin.com, our online manager that helps you update, manage and purchase the latest aviation data for your Garmin device, all in one place.

¹A single update of FliteCharts comes preloaded on the unit. FliteCharts will automatically disable when the data is over six (6) months out-of-date (six month period to commence when map is loaded in the factory). Each box will contain a certificate for a free six (6) month period for FliteCharts updates. After the six month period, you must purchase a subscription for continuous FliteCharts chart availability.

Database update 696 garmin

equation is whether Apples large-screen iPad can step in for either one of the Garmins. Weve been asked this, so were examining in it in this article. The quick answer is the iPad isnt a replacement for the 696, but, as with the aera, it does some things-a lot of things-that expensive GPS cant.

We just said the size and weight were a disadvantage, but is that fair? In a large cockpit, where the 696 is permanently mounted, the weight wont matter and the size will be a plus. In a tight cockpit like a Diamond DA20 or an older Mooney, the 696s 5.7 by 7.7 inch overall size is yoke mountable, but some will find it a push to do that. At 2.2 pounds, its a heavy lump on controls you want to be able to move without restriction.
