Preakness Stakes fun facts
• The Preakness is named after the horse who won the first stakes ever run in Pimlico when its doors first opened on May 27, 1873.
• The Preakness Stakes is sometimes dubbed "The Run for the Black-Eyed Susans" because a blanket of Viking daisies, decorated to look like Black-eyed Susans, is traditionally placed around the winner's neck. Actual Black-eyed Susans -- the state flower of Maryland -- are not in season during the Preakness.
• The official drink of the Preakness Stakes is the Black Eyed Susan cocktail made with orange juice and vodka.
• The Friday before the Preakness is Black-Eyed Susan Day at Pimlico, where a party atmosphere prevails, including the running of the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes for 3-year-old fillies and appearances by notable female jockeys.
• While pre-race celebrations in Baltimore last for days, the actual Preakness Stakes race lasts an average 2 1/2 minutes.

The second jewel of the Triple Crown is up for grabs on Saturday.
The 2021 Preakness Stakes, which will run at the Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, will help determine whether Medina Spirit can become the first horse since Justify in 2018 to win the Triple Crown. Even if the horse does win Saturday's race, however, that lofty accomplishment might not be guaranteed.
LIVE: Follow for updates from the 2021 Preakness Stakes
That's because Medina Spirit returned a test positive for 21 picograms of betamethasone after its win at the 2021 Kentucky Derby. Pimlico decided to let the horse race on Saturday but, if a second test confirms the first, then Churchill Downs will invalidate Medina Spirit's Derby win and grant runner-up Mandaloun the retroactive victory. The retesting results aren't expected for several weeks.
Mandaloun is not part of Saturday's race at the Preakness Stakes.
Just another tantalizing tidbit for bettors and sports fans alike ahead of Saturday's race, which will include 10 horses and jockeys — including prohibitive morning-line favorite Medina Spirit (9/5 odds).
With that, here's everything you need to know about the 2021 Preakness Stakes, including the post time and how to watch the event.

Preakness Stakes (G1)
Rombauer made a last second push down the home stretch to pull ahead of Midnight Bourbon and Medina Spirit, to win the 146th Preakness Stakes for Jockey Flavien Prat and Trainer Michael McCarthy.
Army Wife, ridden by jockey Joel Rosario and trained by Mike Maker, was able to extricate herself from tight quarters leaving the backstretch, tipped outside to challenge long shot pacesetter Lady Traveler midway around the turn and opened up on the field once straightened for home to earn her first career stakes win in the 97th running of the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes.
In last year's rearranged schedule, the Preakness Stakes was run as the third leg of the Triple Crown. The race at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore is back in its traditional spot this year, sandwiched between the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes.
Medina Spirit failed a drug test after its win at the Kentucky Derby but will be racing in the Preakness. The colt, trained by Bob Baffert, is facing additional scrutiny and testing but is one of the favorites to win Saturday's race. You can see all of the Preakness odds here.

2021 Preakness Stakes post time, odds: Live stream, TV info, how to watch race at Pimlico Race Course
The second leg of horse racing's triple crown is always brimming with intrigue. The 146th running of the Preakness Stakes is no different, but not for the usual reason.
Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit, trained by the legendary Bob Baffert, enters as the betting favorite, though both horse and trainer are surrounded by controversy. Following Medina Spirit's Derby win he tested positive for a substance that is banned on race day, putting his victory in doubt for the time. He has since tested negative and will therefore be allowed to enter the Preakness.
Baffert has taken his lumps from the racing community, been sued by bettors, and has decided to stay away from Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore.
Regardless, both of his entries are primed to compete Saturday, with Concert Tour entering as second choice. Steve Asmussen's Midnight Bourbon, with Irad Ortiz Jr. on board, comes in at 5-1.

The third Saturday in May returns with fans for the first time in two years, as the 2021 Preakness Stakes heads to the starting gate at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore on Saturday. The “Run for the Black-Eyed Susans” kicks off late Saturday afternoon in Louisville at Churchill Downs. It is the 13th race on the schedule, and is scheduled to start at approximately 6:47 p.m. ET.
It will air live on NBC Sports Network, and can be live streamed at NBCSports.com/live. If you don’t have a cable login to access the apps, you can get a free trial from YouTube TV, Hulu with Live TV, AT&T TV Now, FuboTV, or Sling TV to stream it. You can also download the Twin Spires app on Roku devices to watch all races from Churchill Downs for free.
The race is a Grade I stakes race with $1.5 million added to the purse. All entrants are three-year-old horses (all mares this year) traveling 9.5 furlongs, or 1 3/16 miles. Last year’s winner was Swiss Skydiver, who crossed in 1:53.28.
The under-investigation Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit opens as the favorite in this year’s race at 9/5. His Bob Baffert barn-mate Concert Tour, who did not run at Churchill Downs two weeks ago, is the second choice early at 5/2.

What time does the Preakness Stakes start? What TV channel is it on?
The second leg of horse racing’s Triple Crown doesn’t have quite the fanfare as the Kentucky Derby. In fact, raise your hand if you’re going to a Preakness party. Thought so.
But this year, there is so much off-the-track drama that it just might generate more interest than normal. All of which begs the question: What time is the Preakness Stakes ?
We’ll start in Los Angeles, where it is in its usual mid-afternoon position of 3:47 p.m. Moving east, it means 4:47 p.m. if you are in the Mountain time zone, 5:47 p.m. in Chicago and 6:47 p.m. if you are munching on crab cakes in Baltimore.
And you can find coverage of the race on your local NBC station starting at 2 p.m. in Los Angeles. (You can make the time adjustments for where you live. ) If you are into some of the lead-up races, which are pretty good, you can find coverage on NBCSN starting at 11 a.m. Pacific time. It’s probably the last Preakness Day coverage for NBCSN, as the station is being discontinued soon.
There are some traditions that mirror the Kentucky Derby at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. Instead of “My Old Kentucky Home,” there is the singing of “Maryland, My Maryland.”
The Derby has the blanket of roses, while the Preakness has a blanket of Black-eyed Susans, which happens to be the state flower of Maryland.
The race is actually shorter than the Kentucky Derby by 1/16th of a mile or, in horse racing parlance, half a furlong. That makes the race 1 3/16 miles.
The drama this year is centered on Derby winner Medina Spirit, who tested positive for betamethasone, which is a legal medication except on race day. It’s not considered a performance enhancer but nonetheless is prohibited on the day a horse runs.
If Medina Spirit wins the Preakness, with a possible disqualification in the Kentucky Derby months or years away, it sure will make things interesting when the final stop on the Triple Crown road takes everyone to New York for the Belmont Stakes in three weeks.
