Collectible Classic: 1973–74 Volkswagen Thing

It may look like the illegitimate love child of a corrugated shipping container and a dumpster, but the VW Thing was in fact the resurrection of a German military vehicle known as the Kübelwagen. More than a specific model, the Kübelwagen was a concept; consider how Americans tend to call any military runabout a Jeep, and you've got the idea. And with Kübel meaning "bucket" and Wagen meaning "car," what could have been a better name for such a steel tub than, of course, the Thing?

But VW's convertible breadbox was called the Thing only in North America, where it went on sale in 1973; it was known elsewhere as the Trekker, the Safari or simply the Type 181 (right-hand-drive models were called the Type 182). The Thing was built on the same chassis as the pre-1968 Microbus and was propelled by VW's air-cooled, 46-hp, 1600-cc flat four. A four-speed manual was the only transmission. Acceleration was ludicrously slow: Zero to 60 mph took more than 23 seconds.

The interior was the very definition of stripped. The only instrumentation was a speedometer that housed a fuel gauge on its dial, and the glove box was really just a glove hole, since it lacked a door. VW also boasted that the Thing's cabin could be hosed out.

It wasn't conveniences or ability that sucked people in, though—it was how screwy the Thing was. The windshield folded and the detachable doors were swappable front to rear. Warmth was provided by an optional gasoline-fueled heater hooked directly to the fuel tank. Most important, however, was that the Thing looked so very, very weird. It wasn't the vehicle a housewife or a two-term Republican or anybody normal would buy.

Naturally, America's youth loved the Thing--the only problem was that few of them could afford it. In 1973, the Thing cost $3150, almost as much as many sports cars and nearly $1000 more than the '73 Beetle. Prices dropped slightly for 1974, but the Thing remained expensive for such simple transportation. To downplay this fact, Volkswagen advertising talked up the Thing's modest off-road ability and pitted it against more expensive trucks such as the Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser. But the two-wheel-drive Thing, with its four-wheel independent suspension, had as much chance of keeping up with an FJ40 on the trails as a roller-derby queen with an inner-ear problem.

In 1973, Ralph Nader pushed to have the Thing pulled from the U.S. market on the grounds that it failed to meet safety standards for passenger cars. He soon got his wish, as tightened regulations forced VW to stop importation after the 1974 model year. Only about 25,000 examples were imported, and the Thing remains as goofy and unusual today as it was thirty years ago. Since so many parts are shared with the Beetle and the Microbus, the Thing is inexpensive to run and maintain--but what else would you expect from a bucket car?

The Volkswagen Type 181 is a two-wheel drive, four-door, convertible, manufactured and marketed by Volkswagen from 1968 to 1983. Originally developed for the West German Army, the Type 181 also entered the civilian market as the Kurierwagen (“courier car”) in West Germany, the Trekker (RHD Type 182) in the United Kingdom, the Thing in the United States (1973–74), the Safari in Mexico and South America, and Pescaccia in Italy. Civilian sales ended after model year 1980.

Manufactured in Wolfsburg, West Germany (1968–74), Hannover, West Germany (1974–83), Puebla, Mexico (1970–80), and Jakarta, Indonesia (1973–80), the Type 181 shared its mechanicals with Volkswagen's Type 1 (Beetle) and the pre-1968 Volkswagen Microbus, its floor pan with the Type 1 Karmann Ghia, and its concept with the company's Kübelwagen, which had been used by the German military during World War II.

All four doors were removable and interchangeable, the windshield folded flat, and the convertible roof could be removed for al fresco driving. The spartan interior featured vinyl covered bucket seats, painted sheet metal, drain holes and perforated rubber mats. A fiberglass hardtop and trunk-mounted auxiliary heater were offered as individual options.

          History[edit]

During the 1960s, several European governments began cooperating on development of a vehicle known as the Europa Jeep, a lightweight, amphibious four-wheel drive vehicle that could be mass-produced for use by various national military and government groups. Development of the vehicle proved time-consuming, however, and the West German government was in need of a limited number of light, inexpensive, durable transport vehicles that could fulfill their basic needs while the Europa Jeep was being developed and put into production.

Although Volkswagen had been approached during the 1950s about building such a vehicle, and had subsequently passed on the proposition, the then-current management of the company saw the project as having some amount of potential as a consumer vehicle; Mexican customers were asking for something that could handle rural roads better than the Type 1, which was a large seller in Mexico at the time, and the popularity of VW-based dune buggies within the U.S. made executives think that a durable, fun, off-road-capable vehicle would become attractive to many buyers. VW could keep cost to a minimum and thus maximize profitability by using existing parts.

Like the World War II era Type 82 Kübelwagen, the Type 181 used mechanical parts and a rear-engine platform, manual transmission and a flat-4 engine derived from that of the Type 1.

The floorpans came from the Type 1 Karmann Ghia, which had a wider floorpan than the Beetle. Rear swing axle suspension with reduction gearing from the discontinued split-screen Volkswagen Transporter was used until 1973, when it was replaced with double-jointed axles used by Porsche and IRS semi-trailing arm setup as used on the 1303 and US-spec Beetles.

Civilian sales began in mainland Europe and Mexico during 1971; in the U.S. in 1972; and briefly in Britain in 1975, where it failed to sell well and was dropped fairly quickly.

The model was dropped from the American lineup for 1975 as it failed to meet new, stricter US safety standards. The Type 181 was reclassified as a passenger vehicle, and thus subject to stricter safety standards. The Windshield Intrusion Rule of the 1975 DOT standard called for a greater distance between the front seat occupants and the front window glass.[2]

The Europa Jeep was the result of a NATO plan to have a vehicle whereby each European NATO makers all combined to build a light-duty patrol vehicle.

The Volkswagen 181 was only supposed to a fill in until the time that the Europa Jeep was ready. From 1968 until 1979, over 50,000 Type 181s were delivered to the NATO forces. By 1979 the Europa Jeep project had fallen apart completely and was abandoned, and the West German government began supplementing its consumption of 181s with the new front-engined Type 183 Iltis.

Despite the West German government's switch to the Type 183, European and Mexican sales of the civilian 181 continued through 1980, and several organizations, including NATO, continued to purchase military-spec Type 181 units through 1983, finding their reliability and low purchase and maintenance costs attractive.

          Technology and performance[edit]

Type 181's rear axle, featuring the VW portal axledesign

Military 181s attain a higher ride height and lower effective gearing by using reduction boxes, a form of portal axles. 181s without reduction boxes feature a transmission similar to the Beetle but with a slower gearing by use of different ring and pinion gears and have stronger, more flexible CV axles. Most mechanical parts are interchangeable with those of other VW models. Optional dual oil bath air cleaners increased filtering ability in dusty environments, and low noise ignition systems were fitted to military cars to be used for radio communication.

The engine is a 4-cylinder rear mounted petrol engine.

          Thing 1973 volkswagen

At $13,000, Could This 1973 VW 181 Be Just The Thing?

The Corvair wasn’t the only car that Ralph Nader considered questionably competent, he also railed against the VW Thing for its own safety shortcomings. Today’s Nice Price or No Dice 181 may not be Nader’s cup of tea, but will its price prove palatable for one risk-bearing new owner?

At $10,000, yesterday’s 1995 Rolls Royce Flying Spur was certainly cheap enough to warrant a cocked eyebrow or two. However, its missing title proved a vexing fly in the ointment. That resulted in a number of you deeming the big Brit to be more trouble than it was worth, and in the end, it came up shy with a 55 percent No Dice loss. Call it a “title wave” of denouement.

Think about the minimum car that you would need. You know, what would be the most bare-bones auto that you could imagine would be able to get you from point A to point B. Got it? Ok, now take that image, that feature set, and whittle it down a good bit. What you have left is today’s 1973 Volkswagen 181, also known in the U.S. as the Thing.

Fans of Charles Addams’ original Addams Family comics will remember the character Thing as something so horrible that only its human hand could be shown. VW Things aren’t actually all that horrible, and in fact, this 70,000-mile example looks to be pretty solid, and adding to that, it carries a new convertible top and side curtains.

Originally intended as a quick alternative to the “Europa Jeep” project that sought to create an all-weather patrol car for European security forces, the 181 was built on a platform borrowed from the Type 1 Karmann Ghia fitted with portal axles from the early Bus and suspension and steering borrowed from the Beetle.

Cleverly designed with removable doors that were interchangeable front to back and a windscreen that could be folded down on its front boot-lid, the easily alfresco 181 sought to capitalize on the VW-based dune buggy craze that was sweeping the globe in the mid to late ’60s.

Unfortunately, along with such niceties as roll-up windows, sound-deadening, and a tachometer, the 181 also lacked any sort of roll-over safeguard, side, front, or rear crash protection, or effective three-point belts. As it was originally classified as a truck, rather than a car, the Thing didn’t need to meet the then growing list of safety standards imposed by the U.S. government. The reclassification in 1975 of the 181 as a car doomed it in the U.S., and the model was withdrawn from the American market that year.

This one being a ‘’73, it eschews the portal axles of the earlier models for a fully independent set up just like on the contemporary bus. It also gets all its lights from the Beetle and its bumpers from… oh, I don’t know, J.C. Whitney? The front brakes have been upgraded to discs for a more sure feel.

Power comes from a dual-port flat-four, which is probably a 1600, but this late in the game, who’s to say? That’s fed by a two-barrel carburetor and features a good bit of brightwork on its air shroud tin and the pulleys. It all looks like it should run without much issue and these old VW engines are a great place to learn things like carb tuning and valve lash adjustment.

The interior features institutional upholstery and wood slats in lieu of floor mats or carpet. That makes for an easy hose-out space, especially if you yank off the doors for better access.

There’s not much info in the ad, but there are a ton of pictures, even a few of the car’s undercarriage. Those show there to be no road rot or other damage in the supporting structure. On the outside, the paint looks serviceable and the car comes with two dog-dish hub caps to keep the muck off your nuts, at least in the front.

Unlike yesterday’s Roller, this Thing has a title, and that is claimed to be clear. Further distancing the VW from the Flying Spur, its asking price is fully three-thousand dollars more expensive. That’s right, you could have had the ultimate luxury sedan for t$10,000, or this basic trainer of a Volkswagen for $13,000. What’s wrong with this picture?

Suffice to say, by being basic, there’s a lot less to go wrong with this Thing than with yesterday’s cheaper Rolls. Does that make the VW a better deal? What do you say, is this 181 worth that $13,000 asking as it’s presented in its ad? Or, does that price mean this Thing isn’t your thang?

          You decide!
