Pomeranian Teddy Bear Cut

Pomeranian haircut / Pomeranian teddy bear cut

I just HAD to start this Pomeranian haircut list with Boo, who is known as the most adorable dog in the world.

Exactly what makes Boo so incredibly darling cannot be pinned down to just one thing. But I know that his teddy bear cut is helping keep his title.

Like the name suggests, the Pomeranian teddy bear cut makes Boo look like a real live teddy bear.

This haircut has become increasingly popular, not only for it’s extreme cuteness factor, but it is one of the easier Pomeranian haircuts to maintain. It’s short, and does not require multiple brushings a day.

To achieve this precious look, the coat is trimmed at an even 2-3 inches in length around the body. The hairs on the face and ears of the Pomeranian are left longer, cut in a circular design. This creates that rounded teddy-like mug we adore so much.

Pomeranian Puppy Cut

Pomeranian haircut / Pomeranian teddy bear cut

Like the teddy bear cut, the Pomeranian puppy cut is basically the same thing. The only difference is that the puppy cut is uniform all the way around whereas the teddy bear cut leaves the hair on the head a little bit longer as previously mentioned.

Even with a puppy cut, this chocolate Pomeranian dog stills looks like a toy teddy bear. The picture of cuddly perfection!

I don’t know about you, but I’m trading in my nighttime teddy bear for one of these Pomeranian dogs ASAP!

Pomeranian Lion Cut

Pomeranian haircut / Pomeranian lion cut

Perhaps the most outrageous of Pomeranian haircut styles on this list is the lion cut. The lion cut will make these small dogs feel like king of their domain.

This Pomeranian haircut is perfectly fitting seeing as these little dogs have huge personalities – commanding, possessive, and barking at everything that comes their way.

We won’t tell them they aren’t actually king of the jungle though.

But that doesn’t mean your Pomeranian can’t sport the look of a lion with a furry “mane”, a shaved body and a tasseled tail.

The Pomeranian lion cut, while fiercely adorable in my opinion, does have one drawback.

Because the body is shaved very close to the skin with this type of haircut, the skin underneath may become exposed. This increases the risk of sunburn, frostbite, sores, ingrown hairs and other allergic reactions in Pomeranian dogs as they are incredibly sensitive without all that fur to protect them.

My advice?

Just check with your vet or groomer before turning your Pomeranian into your little lion.

So what do you think about the Pomeranian lion cut anyway? Ridiculous or…posh?

Pomeranian Fox Cut

Pomeranian haircuts / Pomeranian fox cut

This wild Pomeranian haircut trend is known as the fox cut.

Don’t let the picture fool you though. Despite the pointed ears and bushy tail, your Pom won’t be catching chickens in the night any time soon.

This Pomeranian haircut makes sense seeing as some Pomeranian features are naturally similar to that of a fox. This includes their triangle-shaped ears, fluffy plumed tails, and in some Pomeranian dogs, their narrow snout (also known as Fox face).

The Pomeranian fox cut simply accentuates what the Pom already has to offer in fox-like features. The hairs around the face and ears are cut in a triangular shape, the back, chest, belly and legs are cut shorter, and the tail is at it’s fullest.

Pretty foxy if you ask me!

Pomeranian Lamb Cut

Pomeranian haircuts / Pomeranian lamb cut

If Mary had a little lamb in modern times, it’d likely be a Pomeranian with a lamb cut. Like the name suggests, this plush Pomeranian haircut will give your pet the look of a lamb’s soft, fleece coat and wool-like texture.

The lamb cut is perfect for Pomeranians with fur that is lighter in color like the darling dog in the photo.

But even Poms that have black fur would be adorable with a lamb cut. So long as she or he doesn’t feel like the black sheep of the family!

Like Mary’s little lamb, your dog is sure to follow you wherever you go with this super sweet Pomeranian haircut style.

Pomeranian Kennel Cut

Pomeranian haircut / Pomeranian kennel cut

Rather than emulate other animals as we’ve seen with the teddy bear cut, lion cut, fox cut, and lamb cut, the Pomeranian kennel cut is simple yet precious.

This haircut was originally designed as a way for Pomeranian show dogs to maintain their style and shape between shows at a shorter length that is easier to maintain.

This Pomeranian haircut isn’t only for show dogs, however.

The kennel cut is a great choice for Pom owners who don’t want to spend too much time grooming and brushing their furbaby every day.

It is also lighter and more comfortable for the dog during the warmer seasons.

The kennel cut is perhaps the most practical of Pomeranian haircut styles on the list.

Pomeranian Show Cut

Pomeranian haircuts / Pomeranian show cut

The Pomeranian show cut is as fluffy as they come.

Of course, this style of haircut takes a lot of extra effort and grooming time as you might expect. The extra time at the groomers also makes it more expensive to maintain…

…but oh, the beautiful fluff.

The show cut, like the name suggests, is the Pomeranian haircut that professional show dogs must adhere to in order to meet the standards set by the American Kennel Club.

It is essentially a set template of the breed standard for the Pomeranian, and the picture one might imagine in their mind when they hear the word “Pomeranian”.

The Pomeranian show cut focuses on the dog’s natural lines. This includes the dog’s naturally thick and profuse coat with a heavily plumed tail.

Only light trimming is allowed to maintain a neat, cleanly and shapely coat. The ears are trimmed to peek out, the bottom for hygienic purposes, and the paws to about 1/2 inch to portray daintiness.

The fullness of the hair on the body then gives the illusion that the Pomeranian is prancing around on tip-toes.

And that’s the cuteness that we love about Poms.

Pomeranian Mohawk

Pomeranian haircuts / Pomeranian mohawk

Arguably the coolest of the Pomeranian haircut styles on this list, the mohawk is only for the most badass of dogs.

It’s not every day that you see a Pomeranian with a mohawk. This is a conversation starting look that truly stands out.

Many Pom owners may not even know that giving their dog a mohawk is possible since this Pomeranian haircut isn’t widely popular. But if you’ve got the hair, then why not?

Unlike humans, you don’t have to spend hours blow drying, gelling and hair-spraying to get your Pomeranian’s mohawk to stand up. It’ll do that all on it’s own with this cut.

You might want to bring in a picture for your groomer for this one just in case though. I doubt they’re giving mohawks often!

Shaved Pomeranian Haircut

Pomeranian haircuts / shaved Pomeranian

Ok, so fluffy lovers are probably not going to like this one so much. Last on the list of Pomeranian haircut styles is the shaved Pomeranian.

Along with the fact that this haircut isn’t fluffy or really cute at all, this is a haircut that I actually don’t recommend.

There are a couple of reasons I want to mention the shaved Pomeranian haircut though:

If you’re not properly grooming your Pomeranian on a daily basis, matting can be a problem.

A shaved Pomeranian seems like such an easy solution to this problem as well as if you just don’t have the money for a proper grooming. However…

…completely shaving your Pomeranian poses a threat to your dog’s health.

A word of caution:

Shaving your Pomeranian very close to the skin with this type of haircut allows the skin to become susceptible to sunburn, frostbite or other allergic reactions and rashes due to exposure. I mentioned this before with the lion cut, and I’ll say it again.

There is a reason that Pomeranian dogs have a double coat and that is to protect this delicate skin. By shaving your Pomeranian completely, you may actually be making a high maintenance dog become even more high maintenance by creating additional health problems they would not otherwise have.

Be sure to ask your vet or groomer how short is too short.

Otherwise, a shaved Pomeranian is a sick Pomeranian.

The other downside to completely shaving your Pomeranian is that their hair may never grow back to be the same as it was before.

Take my advice and avoid this Pomeranian haircut if possible. It’s better just to get one of the aforementioned cuts in the first place than to risk it.

If you’re going to own a high maintenance dog, be sure you can properly care for him or her with proper grooming. A Pomeranian’s naturally gorgeous hair really makes this dog breed quite special.

Don’t you think?

Pomeranians are adorable, pint-sized fluff balls filled with energy and spunk. They are the smallest of the spitz—AKA Nordic—breed and sport not one coat, but two! While that may sound like extra work for you when it comes to grooming, a Pomeranian's fur is actually quite easy to maintain. And the best part about it is all the fun hairstyles your Pom can rock!

6 Best Pomeranian Haircut Styles

Not sure which haircut style best suits your Pomeranian? That's OK. A long, thick coat gives your Pom the chance to try a number of haircut options, ranging from cute and cuddly to bold and fierce.

1. Teddy Bear Cut

Transform your Pom into a real-life teddy bear with this cute cut. The teddy bear cut gives your pooch a rounded face and ears for an extra cuddly appearance. Because the emphasis is more so on your dog's face, you can get Fido's coat cut to whatever length appropriate for the weather.

2. Lion Cut

Hear your pint-sized Pomeranian roar with the adventurous lion cut. With this look, the fur on your dog's head, neck, chest, and front legs are kept long (like a lion) and the fur on his body, belly, back, hind legs, and tail are closely shaved. Your Pomeranian will likely need doggie sunscreen or a sweater on if exposed to the heat or cold with this haircut.

3. Puppy Cut

It's easy to see why one of the most popular Pomeranian haircuts is the puppy cut. This haircut is not only cute but also fitting for active Pomeranians who want to enjoy the sunshine. The puppy cut, similar to the teddy bear cut, involves cutting the fur at a uniform length all over, but without the look of a rounded face like the teddy bear option.

4. Fox Cut

The adorable fox cut will have passersby doing double takes to see if you're walking a Pomeranian or a real fox. The fox cut focuses on giving your Pomeranian a pointier face and ears by cutting them in a triangular fashion. The rest of the fur on the body is cut shorter, and the tail is as wild-looking as a fox's.

5. Lamb Cut

Want a simple, low maintenance haircut for your Pom? The lamb cut is a great option that is not only simple but also makes your sweet pooch look like a soft lamb! This cut accentuates your Pomeranian's face by giving him more pointed-looking ears and a distinct muzzle.

6. Kennel Cut

If you're looking for a low maintenance haircut for your Pom, the kennel cut is the way to go. This hairstyle keeps your dog's fur at a manageable length, so you can choose as long or short as you'd like. You could try starting with a longer length to see how easy it is to maintain then cutting shorter if necessary.

How Often Should a Pomeranian Be Groomed?

With fur as fluffy as a Pomeranian's, the question of how many visits you and your pooch will be making to the groomer is bound to cross your mind.

"Every dog with anything besides a smooth coat should be groomed on the average of four to six weeks at a minimum," says Ani Corless, owner of Luxury Groomer in NYC.

Corless recommends this time frame because of the cycle of hair growth and for basic health. "They will need their sanitary areas trimmed for cleanliness, [and] the hair in their paw pads trimmed out to prevent slipping and knots forming like little pebbles hidden in there," she adds.

Another reason Corless suggests staying on top of your Pomeranian's grooming, especially in the summer: pesky pests. The grooming and bathing process gives you or your groomer the chance to fully inspect your dog's skin and properly remove any ticks or other parasites if necessary.

Pomeranian Haircuts for Summer vs. Winter

Like many spitz dogs, Pomeranians have a double coat—an undercoat to act as insulation to keep them warm and a top coat to protect the undercoat and skin from weather conditions.

This means it's important to avoid shaving your Pomeranian in the summertime. Corless says they need the bulk of their fur so their body temperature stays regulated.

"If you cut it too short, you compromise that insulation layer and the dog will actually overheat," she says. "They are also prone to something called shave alopecia. This is when permanent hair loss occurs as a result of shaving the hair close."

Prioritizing your Pomeranian's coat and skin maintenance will ensure your fluffy friend can safely sport any kind of haircut. If you go with a shorter haircut for your Pom, keep the coat and skin moisturized and sun protected to avoid any sun damage.

"For the winter, you can choose to leave dogs' hair longer and be more creative with their haircuts," Corless says. "The same moisturizing is good with dry air, and watch out for wet weather matting up their coat. Otherwise, brush, brush, brush your dog."

Short and sporty, thick and fluffy, and everything in between. Pom’s thick malleable coat offers us a whole world of fashionable styles.

Katlin Primrose VOA, an advanced professional groomer through IPG, walks us through various Pomeranian haircut styles.

Standard vs Exotic Grooms

This article explains the main Pomeranian haircut styles that any good dog groomer will know and understand. See our picture guide on 31 grooming styles and trims.

But the internet has a way of creating new styles and terminology that us groomers haven’t heard of. Asking your groomer for a “fox” or “lamb” style may not translate well. Some of these new terms don’t exist in our day-to-day work / training.

That doesn’t mean we can’t do it, we just need to better understand what you want. The best thing you can do is bring in a picture and ask us to replicate it.

For most groomers this actually adds a little excitement to our day. So don’t be afraid to challenge us a little.

Two Important Notes About Pom Coats:

There’s two important things to remember when grooming a Pom coat:

1. Pom’s need regular brushing

Your Pom is a double-coated breed that is prone to matting. Deep brushing will keep them from developing painful tangles, and will make grooming much easier.

2. Clipping will damage their coat over time.

Haircuts such as a teddy bear cut, kennel cut, lion cut, or shave down can cause permanent coat damage overtime. Usually leading to  ‘clumpy’ hair texture. The only way to completely avoid this is to only use longer haircuts.

1. Ungroomed

ungroomed

Yes, ‘ungroomed’ can be certainly be a style. Some owners just prefer long, thick coats. However this style requires the most amount of care and maintenance.

Pomeranian’s are prone to matting. Overtime matting will continue to pull tighter and tighter, bruising the skin and causing severe discomfort.

If you prefer a longer coat then a daily brushing routine is required. But remember, you must brush all the way down to the skin. We recommend a long pinned brush to reach deep tangles.

ungroomed pom diagram

Note the paws, belly, ears, and bum are overgrown.

Remember: if matting becomes severe then a Vet may recommend a complete shave down. Shaving a Pom has several negative side effects. We certainly want to avoid this, and we can with proper daily maintenance.

2. Show Trim

Show Trim

For those who love a longer, more natural coats, but cleaned up to give a ‘polished’ finish. The show cut is the standard groom for Pom’s appearing in dog shows. Although it’s very popular among everyday Pomeranian owners.

Grooming Technique:

  • The show cut is achieved using scissoring techniques.
  • The bum hair is thinned down and a small area is trimmed so it doesn’t collect poop.
  • The tail is trimmed to look like a fan (in the show ring it’s hair-sprayed up).
  • The chest is trimmed to a natural smooth bulb shape and the feet are trimmed to be cute and cat-like.
  • Ears are trimmed close in the Pomeranian pattern.

3. Hand Scissor

A hand scissor (like the title describes) is a custom trim using scissoring techniques. You can achieve a much tighter and shorter trim without shaving. Shaving can leave long term damage to their coat, which is why scissoring is often favored.

Grooming Technique:

  • The bum and chest are trimmed up and nicely rounded.
  • Paws are scissored short.
  • Ears rounded.
  • The belly is also trimmed a bit shorter.
  • Length is left on the tail and rounded.
  • Our goal is to achieve a shorter trim while keeping the Pomeranian look, and without damaging the hair.

4. Teddy Bear

teddy bear cut

The Teddy Bear (sometimes referred to as ‘Fox’) is a very popular groom among several different breeds,

It’s an excellent low maintenance trim. Some clipping is involved, however it will not cause as much damage as shorter grooms. Overtime it may still cause permanent coat damage.

Grooming Technique:

The idea here is to mimic a stuffed teddy bear:

  • Approx 1/2″ to 1″ long throughout the body, and shaped to look foxy and cute.
  • Soft rounded ears.
  • Head is spherical with shortened neckline to accentuate the head.
  • Tail is trimmed to look like a brush.
  • Legs are same length throughout so they have a thick ‘tube’ look.

5. Kennel Cut / Boo Cut

kennel cut

Next to a shave down, this is the most damaging cut you can do to Pomeranian hair. Kennel Cuts are recommended for people who are not physically able to brush their Pom, or their dog is old and needs to stay sanitary.

Grooming Technique:

  • Short all over with a rounded head and classic pom ears.
  • A small amount of length is left on the tail, with a brush look.

This clip is very short. In fact, your groomer may ask you to sign a form understanding this cut will damage their coat.

6. Shaved / Partly Shaved / Lion Cut

Generally we don’t recommend shaving (partly or in full) your doubled-coated dog unless advised by your vet. There are a few reasons for this:

It can impact your dog’s health and happiness

A dogs coat is their natural barrier against the elements. It provides UV protection, provides warmth in the winter, and insulates them from excessive heat in the summer.

Some owners mistakenly believe that shaving their shedding (double coated) dog will not only relieve their own allergies, but help their dog in hot weather. In reality this practice is a determinate to the health of your dog.

Their Coat Will never be the same

Shaving doubled-coated breeds will eventually cause permanent coat damage. Hair will grow in with an unsightly ‘clumpy’ texture. There’s no going back to their soft, fluffy coat.

35 Pomeranian Haircuts for Dog Lovers

Do you own a Pomeranian? Well, give it a beautiful haircut to make it look cuter than ever!

Pomeranian haircuts vary greatly. The main difference is usually the length. They are famous for growing very long coats that can make them uncomfortable. If you live in a cold climate voluminous fur might be appropriate to keep the dog warm.

However, a tropical climate can make a Pomeranian very uncomfortable if you let the coat grow naturally and forget about haircuts. Meanwhile, even the longest and most beautiful coat can be very had to take care of. You’ll end up dealing with knots, unmanageable fur, and hair clumps all over your house. So if you want to avoid a lot of hassle, you need to get your dog a good haircut.

Cute and Adorable Pomeranian Haircuts

Your cute Pomeranian will feel much better when his or her hair is taken care of. Long fur coats might look great when they are clean and brushed but they quickly lose their attraction after the dog takes a walk in the rain or snow. Keeping your Pomeranian neat is one of the most important things you can do to make your and your dog’s life better.

We have collected 35 interesting Pomeranian haircuts to consider the next time your pet’s coat grows too long.

1. Foxy Pomeranian

Foxy Cut for Pomeranian Haircuts

This is a great Pomeranian haircut that will keep your pet’s fur neat while not making it too short. Keep the fur all the same length but don’t allow it to hang too low in order not to get dirty.
