Orioles 12, Padres 6

Winner: Gallardo (3-1)
Loser:  Friedrich (4-3)

WHAT WENT RIGHT: Yovani Gallardo pitched six innings, matching his long for the year. He allowed three runs and won for the second time since coming back from shoulder tendinitis.

The Orioles had 12 hits. Five players had two each.

WHAT WENT WRONG: For the second straight game, Oliver Drake gave up three runs in a late inning. On Tuesday, he gave up three runs in the seventh in a game the Orioles led by 10. Drake followed by allowing three runs in the ninth in a game the Orioles led by nine.

STREAKING: The Orioles have their third seven game winning streak of 2016. They have one in April, May and June. They’re 17 games over .500 at 47-30 and lead the AL East by 5 ½ games.

HOT HITTING: The Orioles scored in double digits in three consecutive games for the first time since May 24-27, 2003.

STREAKING II: Jonathan Schoop has an 11-game hitting streak. Adam Jones has a 10-game hitting streak.

HOME RUNS CONTINUE: The Orioles tied the major league record for most home runs in June as Mark Trumbo homered in the fourth inning. It was the Orioles’ 55th home run in June, and the 22nd for Trumbo, which leads the major leagues.

Trumbo had four RBIs.

JONES AT HOME: Jones is 14-for-31 (.452) in seven games at Petco Park.

Jones has 27 RBIs in June, the most in any month of his career.

HOLD ON, JOEY: Joey Rickard tried to make a sliding catch on Yangervis Solarte’s foul ball in the fourth inning. A fan interfered with his attempt, and it was called an out.

San Diego manager Andy Green challenged the ruling, which was upheld.

GREEN GONE: An inning later, Green was ejected for arguing with first base umpire Bill Miller when he wanted Chris Davis called for interference.

HE CAN HIT, TOO: Gallardo, who is the most accomplished hitter among pitchers on the Orioles, delivered a sharp single to left in the fifth inning. He added a single in the sixth. Gallardo is the first Orioles pitcher to have two hits in a game since Zach Britton on July 3, 2011.

VANIMAL SIGHTING: Vance Worley is on his way to Seattle, manager Buck Showalter told reporters. He’ll join the team on Thursday. Caleb Joseph will catch in Frederick on Wednesday and presumably join the Orioles in Seattle, too.

UP NEXT: Chris Tillman (10-1, 3.52) faces Tajuan Walker (3-6, 3.45) as the Orioles open a four-game series in Seattle on Thursday night at 10:10 p.m.

Richie Martin - Ends year on modest hit streakMartin went 3-for-10 with a run scored and four strikeouts over the last three games of the season.
ImpactThe shortstop saw fairly regular playing time after Ramon Urias (groin) was shut down for the year. It wasn't a very convincing final audition form Martin, who went 13-for-54 (.241) across his last 22 games of the season while splitting time with Pat Valaika at shortstop. For the season, Martin slashed .235/.269/.286 with one home run, eight RBI, nine runs scored and two doubles through 105 plate appearances.
Trey Mancini - On base three times SundayMancini went 2-for-4 with a walk in Sunday's 12-4 loss to Toronto.
ImpactThe 29-year-old ended the year on a high note, going 9-for-29 (.310) across his last eight games. Mancini's power drought continued, however, as he had no homers in last 21 contests, leaving him with 21 long balls overall. He added a .255/.326/.432 slash line with 71 RBI, 77 runs scored and 33 doubles across 616 plate appearances as a near-everyday option at designated hitter or first base.
Kelvin Gutierrez - Racks up three hitsGutierrez went 3-for-5 in Sunday's 12-4 loss to Toronto.
ImpactThe third baseman didn't hit very consistently overall this year, but he hit safely in 14 of his last 16 games, going 19-for-54 (.352) in that season-ending hot stretch. Gutierrez posted a .608 OPS with three home runs, 20 RBI, 23 runs scored and three triples across 295 plate appearances between Baltimore and Kansas City.
Tyler Nevin - Hits first big-league homerNevin went 1-for-4 with a solo home run and a walk in Sunday's 12-4 loss to Toronto.
ImpactThe 24-year-old got Baltimore on the board in the third inning with his first major-league homer. Nevin hit safely in all three games he started since he received a late-season call-up. He could be in the mix for a big-league job in spring training, but he'll need to show better than the .227/.305/.392 slash line he posted across 111 games with Triple-A Norfolk this year.

He posted a 3.24 ERA in his previous five outings but saw his season ERA climb to 5.04 through 64.1 frames. Zimmerman finished the 2021 campaign 56:21 K:BB and a 1.48 WHIP.

Orioles score 9 runs in 8th inning, rally past Royals 9-8

BALTIMORE (AP) — Kelvin Gutierrez hit a game-tying two-run single, two Kansas City outfielders collided on a ball hit by Cedric Mullins, allowing two more runs to score, and Ryan Mountcastle followed with a two-run homer as the Baltimore Orioles scored all their runs in the eighth inning in a 9-8 win over the Royals on Wednesday night.

“We haven't had too many of those types of innings in the last few years," Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said. “It took us eight innings to put some at-bats together. We were pretty flat offensively. We caught a break. We don't get too many of those usually.”

Baltimore has taken two of three from the Royals, who haven't won a series at Camden Yards since April 2014.

Salvador Pérez hit his 42nd homer for Kansas City and trails Shohei Ohtani by one for most in MLB. He leads the majors with 104 RBIs, moving one ahead of José Abreu, of the Chicago White Sox, who plays later Wednesday at Oakland.

"I never see something like that in my career," Pérez said about the outcome. "Today was one of those games you just have to forget about it.”

Austin Hays extended his career-best 15-game hitting streak with an RBI double in the eighth for Baltimore's first run. Anthony Santander and pinch-hitter Ramón Urías had RBI singles off Josh Staumont (3-3), cutting the deficit to 5-3.

After Gutierrez's two-run single off Jake Brentz, Mullins hit a fly ball between right fielder Hunter Dozier and center fielder Edward Olivares, who bumped into one another, allowing two runs to score. Mountcastle capped the rally with his 26th homer.

“That was awesome,” Mountcastle said. “That was a great win. We didn't give up. It's very easy to do that this late in the year. For us to battle back and win today was huge.”

Dillon Tate allowed a two-out, three-run homer to Andrew Benintendi in the ninth that cut Baltimore's lead to 9-8. However, Tyler Wells got the last out and earned his second save.

Benintendi finished with three hits and five RBIs.

Manny Barreda (1-0) picked up his first career win.

“Baseball-wise, this is probably the pinnacle of my career right now,” Barreda said. “This is the moment I have been waiting for since I was a little kid.”

The Orioles matched their largest comeback of the season, joining an 8-7 win on July 28 against the Marlins when they overcame a 5-0 disadvantage after two innings.

“To have one inning that gets away from us like that, our worst inning of the year, that is hard to swallow,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “We had some things get away from us today.”

Pérez moved into sole possession of third place on the Royals’ all-time list with his 194th career home run.

Orioles: 1B/DH Trey Mancini (oblique) is still sidelined with soreness. Hyde hopes he can get in the lineup over the next couple of days. … RHP Hunter Harvey is dealing with a right triceps strain and remains on his rehab assignment with Triple-A Norfolk. “I don’t know if it’s season-ending or not,” Hyde said.

Royals: RHP Carlos Hernandez (5-1, 3.57 ERA) is 4-0 with a 1.91 ERA and 31 strikeouts and just 10 walks over his last seven appearances (42 ⅓ innings).

Orioles: LHP John Means (5-6, 3.47 ERA) is looking for his first win since July 31. He has logged 119 1/3 total innings this year, compared to 43 2/3 over a shortened 2020 season. “It’s definitely felt like a grind to get through these last couple of months,” Means said.
