Tumblr’s at it again, thanks to the new European Privacy Laws. There’s probably nobody who will read this, but it pissed me off so much that I decided to make a post about it. (Ignore the weird language mish-mash, depending on your country the language might differ.)
OK, so many of us get this screen when we try to access our dash:
Realise how the ‘OK’ button is a nice, attention-grabbing blue? If you’re like me, you’re not exactly into reading a 100 pages document and tend to just click it.
My tip? DONT. Instead click on ‘Manage Options’ right next to it:
Now you’ll see this page:
Still pretty harmless, right? That ‘Accept’ button is looking really attractive right now. Instead, click on Verwalten (Probably something like ‘Manage Options’ or something in english) and you’ll get to this page:
Now that’s not too bad, right? I just switched all the buttons to ‘off’, because I’m jealously guarding my personal information and don’t want Tumblr to go off and do who knows what with it. Looks like we’re done! But wait: There’s a SHOW option.
When we click on that one, what we will get is this:
A HUGE list with OVER 300 ENTRIES of companies that can use your data by default if you’d just clicked ‘OK’ on that very first page. Coincidence that this list is hidden that much? Me thinks not. They’re all switched on by default, but I am still a petty bitch that doesn’t want to give out her data, so I switched them all off. All 300+ of them. There is no option to switch them all off at once, and even if you disable all the options above, the companies are still switched on.
(If you wonder how i got that number, I copied the list into excel and looked at the cell number. No way am I actually counting all those entries)

Shorthand Google Reference Guide
I’m gonna type this up while it’s fresh on my mind because some of y’all don’t know how to use Google
SO YOU WANT TO DRAW
A woman sitting in the grass.
IF YOU SEARCH: female sitting
Very vogue. Very male gaze. Good for fashion or model pictures, not very good if you’re wanting to draw a natural looking pose on a woman who isn’t a model and whose camera certainly didn’t fucking turn on by itself.
IF YOU SEARCH: female sitting pose
Arguably worse, depending on the use. My experience with “female + pose” searches is that you get a lot of IMVU and The Sims pose sets, and artists making sketch compiliations that… don’t always have great anatomy and are frequently just more stiff model poses. I do use similar searches for pinup sketches, ie, “female sassy pinup pose,” though “posing for pinup photography” and “how to pose for” will give different results if you aren’t finding what you need.
IF YOU SEARCH: woman student relaxing sitting on grass crossed legs
Closer. Still kind of staged looking. Maybe we don’t want her studying. Maybe we just want her relaxing. Still, you start to see how specific keyword searches will really get you results.
IF YOU SEARCH: woman sitting under tree grass relaxing nature summer
Nice. This is only a small handful of the results, but most of them more or less fit my mental image. Mostly stock images, but good for gesture sketches or figuring out a pose. Still… we could go further, and I think I will.
IF YOU SEARCH: woman sitting under tree grass relaxing nature summer senior photography
Jackpot. Senior pictures aren’t always awkward kids in braces. Look at how much more natural a few of these look? Compare that to the “Female sitting” search. Google Search tip #1 is basically “use more and specific keywords.”
But just… one more thing I just… can’t get off my mind… what if I… just…
IF YOU SEARCH: black woman sitting under tree grass relaxing nature summer senior photography
Uh oh. So let me level with you, if you just google “dreadlocks,” expect a lot of white people. I spent over 30 minutes adding keywords to this search, and every page was still white people. Breaking it back down to “black woman sitting on grass” helped but gave me all the boring pose issues of the female sitting search. So basically, Google Search tip #2 is: Google image search is as White as the rest of the damn world. How do we find what we’re looking for now, then?
IF YOU SEARCH: black woman sitting in grass nature tumblr blackout
Beautiful, natural poses. Adding “photography” whitewashed it. Adding “summer” gave me bikini pinups. Searching for POC models using Google image search is infinitely more frustrating than finding a million thin white women, and you’re usually going to be better off supporting POC modeling blogs themselves than fighting with Google all day. Using “tumblr” and “instagram” as keywords may also get you a lot more natural, less Vogue Was Here hits. Pinterest too, on occasion.
But keep in mind that these are real people–especially using tags like “tumblr” or “blackout.” There’s a difference between referencing a pose or drawing different face shapes, and outright copying someone’s exact likeness without their permission. Maybe also consider liking/reblogging/following them if they’re a model or photographer. Use some common sense. You don’t own images found on google yadda yadda don’t be a dick.
Have fun being better at search engines and learning how to draw stuff!
I'm kinda ashamed to ask this, but could you make a tutorial on how to draw hands? ;A;
omg dont be ashamed at all!! Hands are generally tough to get used to, lots of artists struggle with it! so dont be ashamed i feel you.
and I actually have made a hand anatomy guide before in fact! If you want to get better at drawing hands I def recommend you learn the basic anatomy first. Please check out the ones I made, I try to make it simple and easy to understand:
There’s my guide to the anatomy, but here’s some more tips that I’ve noted to myself that I’d like to include
First off, I’d like to just note on the fingers: if you pay close attention to your own hand, you may notice the fingers are ever ever so slightly curved inward. It’s a very subtle detail, but I noticed that, despite how slight it is, it can make a hand look more lively, and less stiff.
Second, the “M” on the palm! Your hand moves in many ways, and because it does it creates creases in your hand. The most prominent creases appear to make an M shape; this is handy to remember for what I’m going to talk about next. (It also could be a “W” I guess, or to be more specific a “ )X( “; just think of it in whatever way helps you remember!)
SO now that you see the M, draw your hand as a basic blocked shape and add your details. As you do, you can see that the M divides the palm into four basic parts!
When the hand moves, parts A, B, or C of the palm, alone or in different combos, will create the general poses that the hands do normally. These parts are the parts that move, with D being stationary, no matter what!
Here’s a chart of all the possible combos. Once you have down what part of the hand moves for a certain pose, you can change up the fingers and tweak it a bit to do what you need to make it more specific!
This is simply my method of drawing hands. God knows there are hundreds of tutorials out there by other artists, but personally, this way helps me the best (after learning the anatomy first).
This way I can divide the hand and combine the parts in any such way I need!
Hands take a lot of effort to grapple, and you need to practice them a lot, especially foreshortening of the hand; that’s really something you need to learn through your own studies. Look at your own hands, draw hands from life, from magazines, shows, comics; just draw hands! You’ll eventually figure out a method that works best for you. So to get better at drawing hands; draw hands!! And don’t stress over it, have fun with it!

i’m really diggin the brush. it’s reminiscent of okami sorta? like how brush ink meets pixel art. v nice
yeah I was getting okami vibes from the brush too!
there’s the settings for anyone who wants it
I've seen some texture differences in your art lately and I love it! Would you mind sharing your brush settings? If not that's okay!
Oh, I’m not sure if you meant this as in more textured or less so (im trying to make my artwork less Super Smooth and “shiny?” but it’s tricky aha)
Here are some brush settings! (i play with the min. size and desnity constantly) I also have other brush settings in my brush settings tag (tagged/brush+settings)
edit: sorry if this is too small!
the variables are “speckle 2 bltmp” and “Texture 1pt”, the “bar 1 em” makes a square shape at larger min. sizes
How do you draw hair? Whenever I try it just *exaggerated hand motion meaning giant mess*
To be honest, that’s pretty much how I draw hair, too. And honestly? Hair is such a complex, diverse thing. There’s a millions of ways to draw hair based on style and texture. I’ve gotten many asks considering hair, and really, I’ve always been a bit confused on how to answer since hair comes in so many different forms. But! Giving it thought, I realized I can give you a really quick, “basic” guide, until I get a more specific question regarding hair.
So, the first step is to draw the hairlines. Hairlines is basically the “hat” of your head, and is what shapes the forehead. Drawing this before you add hair as a guide will be extremely helpful with the hairstyle, and it adds to the the facial features as well. There’s many different types hairlines, as shown here, and they may all vary in height or shape. Go wild, be experimental! Remember that this is a guide, however, so once you have the hair drawn out, make sure that the hairline isn’t as visible as it is here, but drawn as fine lines instead.
The next thing you can do is to draw a point somewhere on the head which will define the volume and the direction of the hair. This is extremely helpful, since you can draw all the hair strands starting from this point. They may start wherever you find fitting, and you may add more than one (although that adds to the complexity!)
The next step is to think in shapes overlapping each other. For wavy hair, I like to draw the shapes as teardrops. For puffy hair I like to draw it in circles and ovals. And for straight hair, I like to think in rectangles. It’s all very simple: use the guides mentioned earlier to place the shapes on the head, making them overlap each other until you’re satisfied. Be as messy or simple as you want, and draw them however you’d like as long as it works for you. Don’t try to details yet, though, focus on shapes!
Once you’re satisfied with your result, you may draw the details to your liking. This, I think requires a tutorial on it’s own since hair textures can vary greatly. I’ll show you a quick example below, but again, this isn’t something that works with all hair types. And naturally, once you’re done, remove the head-shape outline. I kept it here just so that you could see how the hair is placed on top of it.
And as you can see, this method works with short hairstyles as well!
In fact, it works for any hairstyle, and you may even mix the basic shapes to get a unique look.
(Ignore the lack of pen pressure on this one)
Now, I realize that the ‘finished’ result can be a bit difficult for some to imagine drawing. Again, I still think this requires a tutorial on it’s own, but I will show you how I do it with one of the hairstyles.
(As you can see, I haven’t drawn out the hairline or a “point”, but this isn’t because I don’t need to, but because I already have it mentally drawn out, it’s not required for this drawing. For some hairstyles, however, I do still draw the hairline/point, especially if the hair is pulled back. But for the sake of simplicity, I will keep it, well, simple.)
Notice how I draw the shapes just as mentioned before? Here, I draw very fine lines in vague teardrop shapes, which I overlay as I draw.
Adding more for volume…
Finishing the look, keep adding more layers…
Defining the “point” as a detail, so that it doesn’t look like some horribly made wig…
can you give me some tips on how to draw teeth ?

Paint Tool SAI: Blood Brush Settings *UPDATED!*
It seems this brush has gotten very popular. With 12K+ views, 900+ favs, and for some reason 700+ DLs, it's by FAR my most popular deviation EVER. Thank you everyone for your kind words of thanks!

Can this be used in Photoshop?
No, I'm sorry but this brush can only be used in SAI. If anyone wants to try and make a version that's similar for Photoshop, you should though!
What brush did you use for this?
I'm 99% positive this was the airbrush tool. It could also be the brush tool though. You could try both and pick the one you like best?
I don't have --- option!
Ah I'm sorry but I can't help there. There are a lot of versions of SAI out there, and at the time I was using a free fan based one. I now have the full version (courtesy of kat.ph) so I don't remember much about the fan version.
What are blending, dilution, and persistence settings?
When I made the brush, it didn't have these settings available to change. No idea why. All setting are included in the picture, so all I can say is make your settings as much like the ones above as possible and leave everything else at default.
How do I get this brush in SAI?
All you have to do is right click an empty box in your brush bank thingy, select "airbrush", and change the settings. You could also rename it by right clicking the brush when you're done and selection "options" so that you don't have two tools named "airbrush" floating around in there.
I'M CURRENTLY IN THE PROCESS OF MAKING A TUTORIAL WITH TIPS AND TRICKS FOR GETTING THE BEST OUT OF THIS BRUSH! CHECK BACK IN THE NEXT FEW DAYS AND I'LL HAVE A LINK POSTED! THANKS FOR 20K+ VIEWS!!!!
Again, I'm always open to your questions and I'll get back to you as soon as possible. Thanks again for all the feedback!
