Use magic device wand

Use magic device wand DEFAULT

Does a Rogue using Use Magic Device for a scroll or wand also need to emulate a class feature?

The truth is, Use Scroll is an emulate class feature check. You are in fact emulating the class feature of spellcasting ability, at a caster level of your UMD roll minus The description for use scroll is just an easy way to do the math quickly. Result is the same either way.

The other thing that it matters for is a check to use a staff. This is also an emulate class feature check. If your effective caster level is above that of the staff, you get to boost it's power to your effective caster level.

Use wand is an emulate class feature check as well. A caster level of zero is sufficient to cast from a wand or staff, IF you emulating the class feature. The only way to have a caster level of zero and the class feature is a UMD check, since the other way to get the class feature gives you a caster level of 1.

You only need one roll to use a scroll, and two if your ability score isn't high enough. No third roll is ever needed.

What is the point of Use Magic Device?
I have a +24 in this skill, which has literally not one single time in thirteen levels been useful. Not one single skill challenge has used it. Moreover, in the past level, I've acquired two items, the Ring of Enhanced Summoning (and I'm playing a sorcerer summoner) and the Charred Mantle (+6 to saves and more). Both would be amazing, but my character inexplicably cannot equip them - despite the +24 UMD. Kind of aggravating to have pissed away 1/3 of my skill points for absolutely nothing.

How much Use Magic Device is needed for scroll/wand?
Do anyone know how to calculate how much UMD you need before using a scroll/wand?

If you’re trained in this skill, you can use it to read spells and activate a magic or psionic items as if you had the spell ability, psionic ability, or class features of another class, as if you were a different race, or as if you were of a different alignment. You make a Use Magic Device check each time you activate a magic item as part of the action required to activate that item. If you’re using the check to emulate an alignment or some other quality in an ongoing manner, you need to make the relevant Use Magic Device check once per hour.

You can’t take 10 with this skill. Nobody can use aid another on Use Magic Device checks. If you ever roll a natural 1 while attempting to activate an item and you fail, then you can’t try to activate that item again for 24 hours.

If you’re emulating a requirement, you must consciously choose which one to emulate. That is, you must know what you are trying to emulate when you make a Use Magic Device check for that purpose.

Emulate Ability Score: To cast a spell from a scroll or manifest a power from a power stone, you need a high ability score in the appropriate ability. Your effective ability score (appropriate to the class you’re emulating) is your check result – If you already have a high enough score in the appropriate ability, you don’t need to make this check.

Emulate Class Feature: Sometimes you need to use a class feature to activate a magic or psionic item. Your effective level in the emulated class equals your check result – This skill does not let you use the class feature of another class. It just lets you activate items as if you had the class feature.

If the class whose feature you are emulating has an alignment requirement, you must meet it, either honestly or by emulating an appropriate alignment as a separate check.

Emulate Race: Some magic or psionic items work only for certain races, or work better for those of certain races. You can use such an item as if you were a race of your choice. You can emulate only one race at a time.

Emulate Alignment: Some magic or psionic items have positive or negative effects based on your alignment. Use Magic Device lets you use these items as if you were of an alignment of your choice. You can emulate only one alignment at a time.

Activate Blindly: Some magic or psionic items are activated by special words, thoughts, or actions. You can activate such an item as if you were using the activation word, thought, or action, even when you’re not and even if you don’t know it. You do have to perform some equivalent activity in order to make the check. That is, you must speak, wave the item around, or otherwise attempt to get it to activate. You get a +2 bonus on your Use Magic Device check if you’ve activated the item in question at least once before.

If you fail by 10 or more with a magic item, you suffer a mishap. A mishap means that magical energy gets released but doesn’t do what you wanted it to do. The default mishaps are that the item affects the wrong target or that uncontrolled magical energy is released, dealing 2d6 points of damage to you. This mishap is in addition to the chance for a mishap that you normally risk when you cast a spell from a scroll that you could not otherwise cast yourself.

If you fail the check by 10 or more with a psionic item, you suffer brainburn. This brainburn affects you in the same way as brainburn that can occur when you attempt to manifest a power from a power stone, except that the damage is 1d4 points per power level instead of 1d6. Brainburn damage from activating blindly is in addition to brainburn damage from manifesting a power from a power stone.

Use Spell Trigger or Power Trigger Item: Normally, to use a spell completion item or a power completion item (like a wand, staff, dorje, or psicrown), you must have the item’s spell or power on your class spell or power list. This use of the skill allows you to use such an item as if you had a particular spell or power on your class spell or power list. Failing the roll does not expend a charge.

Use Spell Completion or Power Completion Item: Normally, to use a spell completion or power completion item (like a scroll or a power stone), you must have the item’s spell or power on your class spell or power list. Use Magic Device allows you to use such and item as if you had a particular spell or power on your class spell or power list.

Casting a spell or manifesting a power from a spell completion or power completion item requires a minimum score (10 + spell level) in the appropriate ability. If you don’t have a sufficient score in that ability, you must emulate the ability score with a separate Use Magic Device check.

Before you use a power stone, you must first have addressed it to determine what powers it contains.

Decipher Written Spell: This works like deciphering a written spell with the Spellcraft skill, except with a higher DC.

Address Power Stone: This works like addressing a power stone using Spellcraft, except with a higher DC.

Skill Unlocks

If you have the Signature Skill feat, the rogue’s edge ability, or another ability that grants you the skill unlocks for this skill, you gain access to the following abilities when you have sufficient ranks.

5 Ranks: You can use the aid another action to assist another creature’s Use Magic Device check by attempting a check against the item’s Use Magic Device DC.

10 Ranks: If you roll a natural 1 when activating an item, you take a –10 penalty on Use Magic Device checks with that item for 24 hours instead of being unable to activate it. This penalty stacks with itself.

15 Ranks: You can use this skill to emulate two races or two alignments simultaneously.

20 Ranks: If you roll a natural 1 when activating an item, you can reroll the check at a –10 penalty to activate the item. You must take the result of the second check, even if it is worse, and you can’t reroll it again.

Device wand magic use

Use Magic Device (Cha; Trained Only)

Contents

You are skilled at activating magic items, even if you are not otherwise trained in their use.

Common Uses

Cause Mishap

SourcePPC:SpyHB

You can intentionally cause a magic item to produce a mishap.

Action: Attempting to create a mishap is like activating an item blindly, and requires a standard action during which you try out magic words or other appropriate actions.

Check: You can cause a magic item to have an intentional magic mishap, as if you had attempted to activate it blindly and failed by 10 or more. The DC to produce an intentional mishap is If you succeed, you have some control over the mishap. The item deals 2d6 points of damage to any one creature or object that the item could have targeted if activated normally. You can attempt to aim it, but if you select an invalid target, you take the damage instead. If you fail the check by 9 or less, you create a normal mishap you do not control. If you fail by 10 or more, nothing happens.

Read Spell/Activate Magic Item

You can use this skill to read a spell or to activate a magic item. Use Magic Device lets you use a magic item as if you had the spell ability or class features of another class, as if you were a different race, or as if you were of a different alignment.

You make a Use Magic Device check each time you activate a device such as a wand. If you are using the check to emulate an alignment or some other quality in an ongoing manner, you need to make the relevant Use Magic Device check once per hour.

You must consciously choose which requirement to emulate. That is, you must know what you are trying to emulate when you make a Use Magic Device check for that purpose. The DCs for various tasks involving Use Magic Device checks are summarized on the table below.

Activate Blindly: Some magic items are activated by special words, thoughts, or actions. You can activate such an item as if you were using the activation word, thought, or action, even when you&#;re not and even if you don&#;t know it. You do have to perform some equivalent activity in order to make the check. That is, you must speak, wave the item around, or otherwise attempt to get it to activate. You get a +2 bonus on your Use Magic Device check if you&#;ve activated the item in question at least once before. If you fail by 9 or less, you can&#;t activate the device. If you fail by 10 or more, you suffer a mishap. A mishap means that magical energy gets released but doesn&#;t do what you wanted it to do. The default mishaps are that the item affects the wrong target or that uncontrolled magical energy is released, dealing 2d6 points of damage to you. This mishap is in addition to the chance for a mishap that you normally risk when you cast a spell from a scroll that you could not otherwise cast yourself.

Decipher a Written Spell: This usage works just like deciphering a written spell with the Spellcraft skill, except that the DC is 5 points higher. Deciphering a written spell requires 1 minute of concentration.

Emulate an Ability Score: To cast a spell from a scroll, you need a high score in the appropriate ability (Intelligence for wizard spells, Wisdom for divine spells, or Charisma for sorcerer or bard spells). Your effective ability score (appropriate to the class you&#;re emulating when you try to cast the spell from the scroll) is your Use Magic Device check result minus If you already have a high enough score in the appropriate ability, you don&#;t need to make this check.

Emulate an Alignment: Some magic items have positive or negative effects based on the user&#;s alignment. Use Magic Device lets you use these items as if you were of an alignment of your choice. You can emulate only one alignment at a time.

Emulate a Class Feature: Sometimes you need to use a class feature to activate a magic item. In this case, your effective level in the emulated class equals your Use Magic Device check result minus This skill does not let you actually use the class feature of another class. It just lets you activate items as if you had that class feature. If the class whose feature you are emulating has an alignment requirement, you must meet it, either honestly or by emulating an appropriate alignment with a separate Use Magic Device check (see above).

Emulate a Race: Some magic items work only for members of certain races, or work better for members of those races. You can use such an item as if you were a member of a race of your choice. You can emulate only one race at a time.

Use a Scroll: Normally, to cast a spell from a scroll, you must have the scroll&#;s spell on your class spell list. Use Magic Device allows you to use a scroll as if you had a particular spell on your class spell list. The DC is equal to 20 + the caster level of the spell you are trying to cast from the scroll. In addition, casting a spell from a scroll requires a minimum score (10 + spell level) in the appropriate ability. If you don&#;t have a sufficient score in that ability, you must emulate the ability score with a separate Use Magic Device check. This use of the skill also applies to other spell completion magic items. Note: More rules for activating scrolls here.

Use a Wand, Staff, or Other Spell Trigger Item: Normally, to use a wand, you must have the wand&#;s spell on your class spell list. This use of the skill allows you to use a wand as if you had a particular spell on your class spell list. Failing the roll does not expend a charge.

Restrictions

You cannot take 10 with this skill.

You can&#;t aid another on Use Magic Device checks. Only the user of the item may attempt such a check.

Action

None. The Use Magic Device check is made as part of the action (if any) required to activate the magic item.

Retry?

Yes, but if you ever roll a natural 1 while attempting to activate an item and you fail, then you can&#;t try to activate that item again for 24 hours.

Modifiers

  • Feats If you have the Magical Aptitude feat, you gain a +2 bonus on Use Magic Device checks. If you have 10 or more ranks in this skill, the bonus increases to +4.
  • Feats If you have the Skill Focus (Use Magic Device) feat, you gain a +3 bonus on Use Magic Device checks. If you have 10 or more ranks in this skill, the bonus increases to +6.

  • Traits If you have the Underlying Principles religion trait, you gain a +1 trait bonus on Use Magic Device checks, and Use Magic Device is a class skill for you.

Use Magic Device Unchained

SourcePFU

About This Section Optionally, a character who reaches 5, 10, 15, or 20 ranks in a skill unlocks various bonuses and abilities unique to that skill. The unchained rogue uses these rules extensively, but others can gain access to them with a new feat.

In this system, characters unlock additional abilities when they attain 5, 10, 15, and 20 ranks in a skill. The skill unlocks system interfaces with the unchained rogue to make the rogue the true master of skills.

Skill unlocks give characters new abilities and ways to use their skills upon reaching 5, 10, 15, and 20 ranks in a skill. Any character with the Signature Skill feat can earn skill unlocks for a single skill, and they are a prime feature of the revised version of the rogue who uses her rogue&#;s edge ability to gain skill unlocks for several of her most iconic skills. Alternatively, you might make skill unlocks a universal part of the game, but you should be aware they add significant power and flexibility to skills, so giving them for free to all classes would grant power boosts to other highly skilled classes such as the investigator and bard, particularly in comparison to the rogue. Another alternative is to eliminate access to the Signature Skill feat, limiting skill unlocks to rogues and rogues alone.

With sufficient ranks in Use Magic Device, you earn the following.

5 Ranks: You can use the aid another action to assist another creature&#;s Use Magic Device check by attempting a check against the item&#;s Use Magic Device DC.

You must take the result of the second check, even if it is worse, and you can&#;t reroll it again.

Activate Blindly

Some magic items are activated by special words, thoughts, or actions. You can activate such an item as if you were using the activation word, thought, or action, even when you’re not and even if you don’t know it. You do have to perform some equivalent activity in order to make the check. That is, you must speak, wave the item around, or otherwise attempt to get it to activate. You get a special +2 bonus on your Use Magic Device check if you’ve activated the item in question at least once before. If you fail by 9 or less, you can’t activate the device. This mishap is in addition to the chance for a mishap that you normally run when you cast a spell from a scroll that you could not otherwise cast yourself.

Decipher a Written Spell

This usage works just like deciphering a written spell with the Spellcraft skill, except that the DC is 5 points higher. Deciphering a written spell requires 1 minute of concentration.

Emulate an Ability Score

To cast a spell from a scroll, you need a high score in the appropriate ability (Intelligence for wizard spells, Wisdom for divine spells, or Charisma for sorcerer or bard spells). Your effective ability score (appropriate to the class you’re emulating when you try to cast the spell from the scroll) is your Use Magic Device check result minus If you already have a high enough score in the appropriate ability, you don’t need to make this check.

Some magic items have positive or negative effects based on the user’s alignment. Use Magic Device lets you use these items as if you were of an alignment of your choice. You can emulate only one alignment at a time.

Emulate a Class Feature

Sometimes you need to use a class feature to activate a magic item.

Emulate a Race

Some magic items work only for members of certain races, or work better for members of those races. You can use such an item as if you were a race of your choice. You can emulate only one race at a time.

Use a Scroll

If you are casting a spell from a scroll, you have to decipher it first. Normally, to cast a spell from a scroll, you must have the scroll’s spell on your class spell list. If you don’t have a sufficient score in that ability, you must emulate the ability score with a separate Use Magic Device check (see above).

This use of the skill also applies to other spell completion magic items.

Use a Wand

Normally, to use a wand, you must have the wand’s spell on your class spell list. This use of the skill allows you to use a wand as if you had a particular spell on your class spell list. This use of the skill also applies to other spell trigger magic items, such as staffs.

Action

None. The Use Magic Device check is made as part of the action (if any) required to activate the magic item.

Try Again

Yes, but if you ever roll a natural 1 while attempting to activate an item and you fail, then you can’t try to activate that item again for 24 hours.

Special

You cannot take 10 with this skill.

You can’t aid another on Use Magic Device checks. Only the user of the item may attempt such a check.

If you have the Magical Aptitude feat, you get a +2 bonus on Use Magic Device checks.

Synergy
  • If you have 5 or more ranks in Spellcraft, you get a +2 bonus on Use Magic Device checks related to scrolls.
  • If you have 5 or more ranks in Decipher Script, you get a +2 bonus on Use Magic Device checks related to scrolls.

Use Magic Device allows a character to use a magic item as if your character had the required class, race, or alignment.

Modifying ability: Charisma

Classes: Bard, Rogue, Warlock, Assassin

Requires training: Yes

Check:

  • equip restricted items: 11 points
  • use restricted wand: 10 points
  • use restricted scroll: generally 11 + 2x spell level

On hardcore rules, an additional successful UMD roll is required to cast a spell from a scroll: UMD [skill + 1d20] vs. [25 + spell level] or the casting fails.

Special: A Warlocks' deceive item feat adds a 4 bonus to UMD checks.

Use: Automatically applied whenever a character attempts to use or equip an item normally unusable by his class, race, or alignment.

Notes[]

  • The UMD skill has changed significantly with game patches. This page now reflects the latest game version
  • Unlike in NWN1, the player can now gain ranks in Use magic device with any class.
  • 11 points are reasonably easy to achieve, even as a cross-class skill. E.g., at character level 8 base skill points + 3 skill focus + 0 charisma modifier.
  • The scroll casting UMD check is difficult. E.g., a level 20 bard with 30 points UMD (23 base + 7 points charisma modifier) may still fail casting high-level spells.
  • Some scrolls have slightly different UMD values than expected from the spell level.
  • No UMD check is required to cast spells from scrolls that have level that is normally too high. E.g., a level 1 Cleric can cast level 9 Cleric spells from scrolls without UMD check.
  • Note that UMD does NOT allow a character to use weapons or armour for which they lack proficiency. For example, a Wizard can NOT use a magical warhammer just because he has UMD.
  • Note: Tiny races like Deep Gnome STILL can not use Longbow even with approriate UMD.

UMD Ranks Needed for Specific Items[]

Item Restriction UMD Ranks Needed
Eldritch Knight Chain Shirt Class: Eldritch Knight 11
Anagrys' Mindmaze Class: Wizard 11
Boots of the Sun Soul +4 Class: Monk 11
Lorne's Falchion Alignment: Evil 11
Wand of Arcane Disjunction Class: Bard, Sorcerer, Wizard 10
Wand of Fire Class: Bard, Sorcerer, Wizard 10

Known Bugs[]

  • If a character needs to have Use magic device to equip a wearable item and if that character must use either a Charisma or skill boosting item, spell, or effect to equip the item using the Use magic device skill, that character may un-equip the item upon area transfers.
