The 10 Essential SpongeBob Squarepants Episodes
The second SpongeBob film, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, comes out in theaters today. With its beloved characters and hilarious wit, Spongebob Squarepants is the best cartoon ever made. I haven’t watched a new episode in 10 years, yet I can’t escape daily spongy references. At home, the SpongeBob lexicon accounts for about 85% of my daily dialogue and just yesterday, I received a Snapchat from my best friend holding canned bread, my favorite SpongeBobism.
I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little nervous to see the new movie because of obvious reasons. If you speak to any huge SpongeBob fan in their 20s, they’ll tell you that the show lost its magic when they decided to cater towards children. (How ironic!) In many of the newer episodes, I find myself thinking “where is the sarcasm and the brilliant stupidity?!” Nothing beats the classic episodes. Whether you are a true SpongeBob fan or seeing him in theaters for the first time this weekend, here are the 10 essential SpongeBob episodes that are the best ever. Warning: This is about to get extremely nerdy.
Squidville (Season 2, Episode 6)
After an aggravated Squidward leaves Bikini Bottom, he discovers that a town filled with all of his odd passions and self duplicates is not as great as he had imagined. In this episode, we learn that Squidward deep down appreciates Spongebob, even more so than canned bread. [Watch Squidville on Amazon Prime]
Dying For Pie (Season 2, Episode 4)
For Employee Brotherhood Day at the Krusty Krab, the employees, Spongebob and Squidward, must exchange home-made gifts. After receiving a sweater made from Spongebobs eyelashes, Squidward ventures out to buy an explosive pie to give to Spongebob. Some of the best quotes come from this episode including: I wasnt sure how big to make the hole for the head, so I used a watermelon for size. and Just the three of us. You, me, and this brick wall that you built between us. [Watch Dying For Pie on Amazon Prime]
My Pretty Seahorse (Season 3, Episode 2)
In this episode, Spongebob befriends a majestic seahorse and wants to play with him all day. Unfortunately, he is more of a burden than anything else and Mr. Krabs forces Spongebob to release him into the wild. The best part of this episode is the end with Patrick as well as when Spongebob is deciding the name of the seahorse. [Watch My Pretty Seahorse on Amazon Prime]
Artist Unknown (Season 2, Episode 18)
Squidward teaches an art class and is haunted by Spongebobs undeniable talent. After Spongebob creates a replica of Michelangelos David, Squidward literally tries to stick his nose on it. If you havent guessed by now, Squidward is my favorite character and you can understand why in this episode. [Watch Artist Unknown on Amazon Prime]
The Algaes Always Greener (Season 3, Episode 1)
In this exciting episode, Mr.Krabs and his arch nemesis, Plankton, switch lives! Plankton discovers that Mr.Krabs life, which he thought to be perfect, was actually incredibly irritating. [Watch The Algaes Always Greener on Amazon Prime]
Krusty Krab Training Video (Season 3, Episode 10)
This episode shines because I can honestly say Ive never seen anything like this in any show before. Unlike any of the other episodes, this one has a very different format. It is a training video intended for the instruction of future Krusty Krab employees. We learn the secrets of the Krusty Krab, including what POOP stands for (People Order Our Patties). The abrupt ending of this episode brilliantly prevents us from ever learning what is in the Krusty Krab secret sauce. [Watch Krusty Krab Training Video on Amazon Prime]
Band Geeks (Season 2, Episode 15)
Im sorry Katy Perry, but Spongebob was the best half-time show performer of all time. One of the great things about this show is that the songs are incredibly catchy. This episodes performance of Sweet Victory was definitely the best song until the finale Goofy Goober song from The Spongebob Squarepants movie stole our hearts. Squidwards proud smile and Patricks, Is mayonnaise an instrument comment easily makes this episode one of the best. [Watch Band Geeks on Amazon Prime]
Club Spongebob (Season 3, Episode 2)
Spongebob and Patrick have a tree house club and tell Squidward, You and your nose will not fit in. Squidward quickly discovers that he was not able to fit in when the whole tree house launches into the sky and lands far far away. Spongebob and Patrick believe they will be saved by their magic conch shell toy. This incredibly ridiculous episode is a must-watch. [Watch Club SpongeBob on Amazon Prime]
Chocolate With Nuts (Season 3, Episode 12)
When asked, most Spongebob fans say the chocolate episode is their favorite. Spongebob and Patrick test their entrepreneur skills by selling chocolate throughout Bikini Bottom. They make important decisions such as saving their tactic of getting naked for real estate and purchasing bag carrying bags. This episode does not disappoint. Shanghaied (Season 2, Episode 13)
In this episode, Spongebob, Patrick, and Squidward board the Flying Dutchmans ship and learn about the ships perfume department, the Dutchmans sock fetishes, and Patricks haggling capabilities. Much like a Goosebumps book, Nickelodeon had real viewers call in to choose one of three possible endings for this special episode. The terrific writing, creativity, and absolute goofiness of Shanghaied makes it the best episode ever. [Watch Shanghaied on Amazon Prime]
