Train Applique Template
This train applique pattern is designed for making raw edge fusible-web appliques.
THE PDF INCLUDES:
• Instructions for making and applying the applique
• Applique placement guide
• The separated applique shapes for tracing
• A coloured photo of the finished design to use as a guide
• Tips for machine satin (zigzag) stitching the applique
TEMPLATE SIZE: 12 x 10 cm (4 3/4 x 4in)
• The template is a computer drawn outline of the design shapes for tracing.
• The template does not include a seam allowance on the pieces.
• Designs are in reverse for tracing onto fusible web.
• Print the template sheet on your home printer – fits A4 and letter size paper.
• If needed, you should be able to change the size of the template by adjusting the scaling in your print settings.
• The template is not limited to use with just fabric, you could also make the design out of paper for decorating cards, etc.

Crochet Train Appliqué Pattern
Welcome to my latest post, today I’m going to start a series about how to crochet a train set with animals to go along with it. We will start with the crochet train engine today. The completed train engine will look like this.

I will be using the US terminology here, for the UK version go to Crochet Train Appliqué Pattern (UK version).
- st – stitch
- sts – stitches
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- sc – single crochet
- hdc – half double crochet
- dc – double crochet
- tr – treble crochet
- Crochet cotton or wool, I used Scheepjes Maxi Sweet Treat 2 ply crochet cotton colours () Poppy Rose, () Lemon, () Mercury and () Black.
- Crochet hook (I used a 1mm hook).
- Sewing needle and thread to stitch the train together.
- Darning needle to weave in ends.
Medium train engine (Using 4 ply crochet cotton & a mm hook)
cm x 9cm or 4” x ”
Small train engine (Using 2 ply crochet cotton & a 1mm hook)
8cm x 7cm or ” x ”
Crochet Train Engine
Row 1: Miss 1 ch. 1 sc in each ch to end. Turn.
Row 2: 1 ch, 1 dec sc over first 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to end. Turn.
Row 3: 1 ch, 1 sc over each st to last 2, 1 dec sc over these 2 sts. Turn.
Row 4: 1 ch, 1 dec sc over first 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to end. Turn.
Row 5: 1 ch, 1 sc over each st to last 2, 1 dec sc over these 2 sts. Turn.
Row 6: 1 ch, 1 dec sc over first 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts. Miss these sts. Turn.
Row 7: 1 ch, 1 sc in each st to end. Turn.
Rows 8 – 1 ch, 1 sc in each st to end. Turn.
Row 1 ch, work 1 sc in next 11 sc. Turn.
Rows 14 – 1 ch, work 1 sc in next 11 sc. Turn.
Work sc around edge. Sl st into beginning. Fasten off.
23 ch, (I do more than I think I will need and undo the left over chain).
Row 1: 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in each of next 2 ch, holding ch against body of train as shown work 1 sc through the ch and body in each st across top. 1 sc in each of next 3 ch. Turn.
Row 2: 1 ch, 1 sc in each sc across. Turn.
Row 3: 1 ch, 1 sc in each sc across. Fasten off.
Join cotton to 6th st from cabin.
Row 1: 2 ch, 1 hdc in same st, 2 hdc in next st. Turn.
Row 2: 2 ch, 1 hdc in same place as ch, 1 hdc in each st to last, 2 hdc in last. Turn.
Row 3: 1 ch, 1 sc in same place as ch, 1 sc in each st to last, 2 sc in last. Fasten off.
Wheels (Make 2)
Using contrasting colour make a magic loop.
1 ch, work 8 sc into loop. Pull circle tight and join with a sl. St in chain.
Join main wheel colour.
Row 1: 3 ch, 1 dc in same place as ch, 2 dc in each st around. Join with a sl st in 3rd ch.
Row 2: 3 ch, (1 dc in next st, 2 dc in following st) repeat to end. Join with a sl st in 3rd ch. Fasten off.
Row 1: 1 sc in 2nd st from hook, 1 sc in each ch to end. Turn
Rows 2 – 5: 1 ch, 1 sc in each st to end. Turn.
Row 6: 1 ch, 1 sc in each st to end. Don’t fasten off.
1 ch work sc around window. Sl st in ch. Fasten off.
To Make Up
Weave in ends. Attach window and wheels to train body.
Crochet chain to fit between the wheels and attach if desired.

Today we are sharing our Train from the Santa’s Workshop Applique Collection. At some point in time Id like to create a whole train, but for now we have a steam engine with an I think I can! attitude! Of course I had to include a pufferbelly if for no other reason than it is fun to say!
The Train Applique was made to fit on a 6″ x 6″ block but can be enlarged or reduced to meet your needs. Enjoy!

DIRECTIONS – Refer to pattern and photo for applique placements and cutting instructions.
Make a copy of the pattern.
Cut out felt using the photo and pattern. Transfer any embroidery markings.
Baste applique pieces to block. Refer to pattern for overlapping lines.
Using 2 strands of floss stitch running stitches.
Using 3 strands of floss stitch blanket stitches.
