Your TiVo: Symptoms you may be experiencing

When powering up your TiVo, the TV shows no change at all. Often, there will also be no lights illuminated on the front panel of the TiVo itself or the lights will be flashing. Sometimes, in this situation, the fan will actually still spin and send some air out the rear fan grates.

There are several possible causes of this problem.

Most often, this behavior indicates a bad power supply. A replacement power supply will usually fix the problem.

Each TiVo needs a very specific type of power supply, so be sure to find exactly the right model. WeaKnees sells parts for most models on their TiVo power supply page. Also, for most TiVo DVRs, you'll need a Torx T to open the TiVo, remove the power supply and install the replacement.

With high definition TiVos connected to a TV using an HDMI connector, it is possible to have a black TV screen (no output) when the HDMI connector has gone bad. This problem is easy to diagnose: Just connect a different cable type (composite or component) between your TiVo and TV and see if that produces a picture. If it does, you may need your HDMI connector repaired. We recommend that you contact weaKnees for assistance.

More Information about this problem

Many TiVo users try testing the output voltage of their power supply to rule this out as a source of problems. While it's true that the power supply should be sending 5v and 12v signals out the hard drive power cable, power supplies that test to those voltages can still frequently cause TiVos to fail to boot. The reason is that the power supply is also responsible for special signaling through another cable, usually a flat white "Parlex" brand cable, directly to the motherboard. And there's really no test for the signals on this cable, short of just trying a replacement part.

One other note about this problem: On TiVo Series3 units with HDMI ports, the unit can appear to be dead because the HDMI port is simply not outputting any video. For that problem, WeaKnees is generally able to repair the HDMI port. See the TiVo HDMI Repair area on the WeaKnees website.

Finally, the TiVo HD and the TiVo HD XL can sometimes exhibit a flashing green light, and no other signs of life. This is an increasingly common motherboard problem on these two units. WeaKnees can now repair the TiVo HD flashing green light problem.

Troubleshooting: Black or Blue Screen on TiVo TCD TCD - All Lights On Front Are Lit

There is a known problem with the TiVo TCD and TiVo TCD The problem affects only some units, and becomes more common as the units get older. This page will help you diagnose and repair the problem.

UNITS AFFECTED: TCD and TCD

PROBLEM: There are two symptoms of the problem--in most cases, both of these symptoms are present:

1) Your TCD or TCD TiVo DVR displays no picture when it is powered on. If you are connecting from the TiVo to the TV using a coaxial cable (round screw-on connector that requires the TV to be set on Channel 3 or 4), then you would see a black or dark gray screen as soon as you plug in the unit. If you are connecting from the TiVo to the TV using red/white/yellow composite cables, you will likely see a blue screen or whatever screen your TV produces when it has no video.

2) If you look at the front of your TiVo DVR, you will see that all of the lights are lit, and remain lit. (While this symptom is generally present with this condition, sometimes, no lights at all are on. In this situation, a replacement power supply almost always fixes the problem also.)

RECOMMENDED SOLUTION: A new power supply. Please see our TiVo power supply page for product information. Please see this link for more detailed information.

Power Supply Installation Instructions:

1) Pull the plug from your TiVo and wait 5 minutes for it to discharge.

2) Open the TiVo and remove the drive bracket. Follow steps 1 and 2 in these instructions.

3) Remove the Power Supply:

(a) Use a Torx T10 screwdriver to remove the two (2) screws holding the power supply to the TiVo chassis (see blue circles in Figure 1). Use needle-nosed pliers to straighten the four (4) pins holding the power supply in place (see red circles in Figure 1 and the closeup of the tab in Figure 2).

(b) Then remove the flat white cable from the power supply (just pull the cable away from the power supply to remove it from the power supply connector). See Figure 3 for a picture of the cable after it has been removed.

(c) Next, clip the white cable tie holding the drive power cable in place (the cable tie is shown in the upper left corner of Figure 1 below).

(d) Then slide the power supply toward the front of the TiVo and up and out of the TiVo.

4) Install the Replacement Power Supply: Reverse the instructions above to install the new power supply. Do not forget to re-connect the white ribbon cable and the hard drive power cable to the new power supply. Although your replacement power supply comes with a new drive cable, in nearly all cases, you can use the cable that came with your TiVo.

5) Reconnect the drive bracket and close the TiVo. Follow steps 6 and 7 in these instructions.

ExclamationBlack Screen Recordings!

Since Sunday I have started to get Black Screen Recordings

What I mean by this is, I set a recording, but when I go to watch it it is Black screen, the length will show the correct time, but the recording content is Zero and the screen is black

This started on Sunday with my attempt to record "The Dammed United" on BBC 2, now when I go to the channel in this case BBC 2, I get a message telling me I am not subscribed to the channel on my package !!!! of course I am, I'm on XL and its BBC 2

But when I go back and delete the Black Screen recording, then go back to the relevant channel again BBC 2, all is well the channel is there

So far this as happened on BBC 2 and Sky 1 HD,

So any one else had this? before I ring up and complain though I would just post it on here to see if I am alone with this one

You know I never connected the two things, and yes I have had slow BB problems over the weekend, just didn't think i would effect TiVo, although it as a BB connection doesn't it

I did in fact set some recording via the web site, and none of them recorded

REboot the box then force a connection to the servers in the setting menu. That should clear the blank channel/recording issues.

Had this a couple of days ago, rang Tivo support and told to power down/up box. May have to repeat this again over time. Never had to do this once with my V+ over 4 years so not impressed I am now part of "service maintenance".

Just completed the reboot, that went ok took about 7 minutes to get a picture back

The connect to the network took a lot longer, once connected it downloaded a file (I think it was a file) then installed the file, the install took 25 minutes, then it returned to picture

My tonights recordings (two) were black screen, so I've got nothing scheduled till tomorrow , so hope it will be ok then

Must say Its another disappointment to add to the other TiVo disappointments suffered so far. I still hang in there in the hope all will get sorted out as the roll out continues

Still feel like a bit of a guinea pig though, and I have paid £ for the privilege

You do know that you can watch TV while it's making a network connection, do you? Once you've started the connection you can press TV and continue to use the box as normal.

I didn't relise that but I did have a good time watching the install complete

Not good for you but finally I am glad that I am not the only one that has been hit by the blank screen recordings.
I've only had it happen twice but the not authorised to this channel during trying to watch just normal live tv is making me potty. It's getting to the point where the wife is now saying why did we get a HD tv and a supposed HD box when I try to go to the the HD channels they don't work until a reboot and 80% of the time I am recording something elsewhere so can't reboot at that time.

This is a bigger issue for me than any red button, reminder missing or global padding. You should be able to switch to a channel and it be there to watch without having to do a reboot to fix it!

Totally agree with all your comments

I to am being questioned about the outlay for a system that is full of problems,

Silly things like not being able to watch BBC2 as the channel is Black Screen with a message saying we are not subscribed to the channel when we pay for the XL TV package

I have rebooted and re authorised my system, but i doing this have lost recordings, so that's another thing to add to my list of "why did we do it "

Its getting harder to justify spending all this money on a system thats worse than what we had (Help)
