Gain root access for HTC One M8 for Verizon via WeakSauce
The HTC One M8 stole the headlines last week with its March 25 launch. The One M8 looks to have a bright future in the mobile industry this year, setting the precedent for other manufacturers. As with any new device release, developers begin to scour the known data looking for ways to root the device.
XDA reports that Jcase and Beaups have done just that with the Verizon HTC One M8 version. While they don’t have the physical device, they have proven that they are able to obtain root access on the software. XDA also states that WeakSauce will also work with last year’s HTC M7. It didn’t take long for developers to get to work on rooting the new device and accomplishing the goal.
So for those who don’t know Bloatware''.
XDA’s news on now being able to root the HTC One M8 is a welcome surprise for those itching to root their M8 that they have preordered. While this root is only viable for the Verizon M8, it is very likely that developers are working on root options for the other carriers as well.
Do you plan on rooting your M8 when you get it? Be sure to tell us how the process worked for you.
Update October 8, Android (Lollipop) OTAs
My old Galaxy Nexus died so I had to get a new phone. I would have loved to have replaced it with a new Nexus 5, but its a work phone, and work is paying for it, and work has a contract with Verizon Wireless. So my options for a phone with a relatively stock version of Android were pretty limitedreally just the Moto X. But Ive had enough of the power-hungry AMOLED display of the Galaxy Nexus, and didnt want to deal with that again in a Moto X, so I picked the HTC One (M8), knowing people on xda-developers have already ported the stock Google Play Edition (GPE) build of Android to it.
When I got the phone, the first thing I did was install the so-called DigitalHigh GPE build from xda-developers, but what I found was anything other than a stock Android experience. There were so many tweaks, options, customizations, and glaring security issues ( everything!) that it just put me off. Really, the whole xda-developers community puts me off. And since this is a blog, let me go on a little rant:
xda-developers, probably the largest Android modification community, is a place full of advertisements and would-be hackers who call themselves developers just because they can compile the Linux kernel and put it up on a slow, ad-ridden file host. No one uses their real names, no one hosts their own files, no one releases source code for their work, and no one documents what they do. And thats to say nothing about the users, who bring the community down in other ways, but for whom I feel, because I know I would hate to be stuck with the bloatware and skins the carriers and manufacturers collude to lock onto Android phones.
Clearly I dont think xda-developers is a very pleasant place. The problem is some people on there actually do really good, really interesting work. So its an inescapable, conflicting, sometimes great, but usually frustrating source of information for Android.
That frustration led me to port the Google Play Edition build of Android to my new HTC One (M8) for Verizon myself, hopefully demonstrating the way I think Android modification should be done in the process. Some points:
- All of the modification is done in an automated way. I chose my favorite automation tool, Puppet, for the job, but shell scripts or Makefiles would work just the same. The point is to download, modify, and build everything required in a hands-off manner. Automation has the added benefit of doubling as a sort of documentation.
- All of the automation code is publicly available and version controlled.
- All of the code is committed with my real name, James Lee.
- Everything is hosted by me without ads, or is otherwise freely accessibleno file hosts.
- All modification is done with a light hand, only changing what absolutely must be changed. (Though I do make a concession to enable root access and the flashlight, but even that is done in a clean and transparent way that can be trivially disabled.)
Im not going to pretend that this is novel, or innovative, or that it took some huge effortits just modifying some configuration files. If you want to give credit somewhere, look at CyanogenMod. Theyre doing Android right. They build from source and have a working version for the M8. Sadly, theyll always be playing catch-up to Google. Still, I have a lot of respect for that team of (real) developers, and I based a number of modifications to the GPE build on their code, so thank you!
Sorry this post was more ranty than usual, but as you can see, I have strong opinions on this subject. If you made it this far, here is the result of my automation:
I leave this file here as a convenience to those who know exactly what to do with it and who are capable of using and understanding my automation tools, but simply dont want to. If that is not you, then you probably shouldnt be modifying your phone.
Im looking forward to seeing how well this works when Android drops.
Android (Lollipop) has arrived and with a few small tweaks to my automation tools, I am pleased to provide a flashable image for the Verizon M8:
Compared to the release, this build deviates even less from the official upstream image. In fact, the only modifications to what Google and HTC distribute are:
- Add the Verizon device ID to the Device Tree image for booting.
- Enable CDMA with two line changes in .
- Set an override flag on boot to allow screen casting to worka feature that is more prominent in Android
Compare that to the DigitalHigh release on XDA which disables important security mechanisms (SELinux, ADB security, file permissions), changes a whole lot of things that dont need to beand shouldnt bechanged (like the I/O scheduler, data roaming, animation speeds, and various WiFi settings), and continues to deviate further as time passes, with inclusions like the HTC Sense camera. At this point, DigitalHigh can hardly be called the Google Play Edition, and many of the changes are downright harmful. I would strongly urge you not to use it.
With my automation tools, you can see exactly what modifications are required for Verizon support, and you can run it yourself so you know youre getting a build that is as close as possible to the way Google intended it to be.
Android was released for the GPE M8 a couple of days ago, and I already have a build of it ready for Verizon M8 devices.
Judging by the state of the Verizon M8 XDA forum, I believe Im the first to have on a Verizon M8. Another score for automation!
As some of you have noticed, some new OTAs have been pushed out for the Google Play Edition HTC M8. Ive been on vacation so I havent had a chance until yesterday to look into them, but now Ive been able to tweak my automation code to get these updates working on the Verizon M8. The nice thing about these changes is that I can now use the publicly available incremental updates directly from Google rather than having to rely on the community to produce dumps of their updated devices. Anyway, here are the updates, to be applied in succession on top of the LMY47O.H4 build from above:
Again, these files are provided as a convenience to those who know what theyre doing.

Gain root on your HTC One (M8) thanks to WeakSauce
The all new HTC One (M8) has been up for pre-sales for a week, which has proven enough time to make a successful rooting tool. The tool is called WeakSauce, it will root your Verizon HTC One (M8) and was developed by jcase and beaupsover on the XDA Developers forums.
WeakSauce is an installable apk file that should work to root the Verizon HTC One (M7) and HTC One (M8), but may work on other HTC models as well. Not a bad start, considering the devs do not yet have a device of their own to test on. Once the devices ship, we can reasonably expect further hacking magic from these guys.
For now, WeakSauce “gains root, mounts a new xbin containing busybox, and su.” Once you’ve installed and run WeakSauce on your HTC One (M8), you’ll still need to grab SuperSu from the Play Store. From there, the exploit only provides write access to /system/xbin. Also, do not rush into root activities after a fresh device boot, WeakSauce needs to re-root your device about a minute in after every reboot. Remember, this is just root, unlocking bootloaders and all that fun stuff will have to wait.
Unlike the new HTC One (M8), users of the first HTC One (M7), once rooted with WeakSauce, can gain s-off and unlock their bootloader by using another tool called firewater. firewater should work on most Qualcomm based HTC phones too.
Due to the complexities of each of the processes above, I highly recommend checking out our rooting information before you get started. When you are ready to gain root on your fancy new HTC One (M8), grab the apk and carefully follow all the instructions on the WeakSauce thread on the XDA Developers forums. For s-off on your HTC One (M7), grab the firewater exploit and please carefully follow the instructions on the firewater website.
What is your number one reason for wanting to gain root on your device?
HTC has recently launched their answer to Samsung Galaxy S5 the new HTC One M8. Well, it has only a few enhancements since the HTC One M7. But still if you have a juicy paycheck, then this is one of the best devices in the gadget world. There are lots of reviews all over the internet that will easily give 9+ score out of 10 to HTC One M8. But still there are minor flaws, which we will definitely talk about later. HTC One M8 showed off a 5 inch full HD display X ~ PPI density, which is remarkably awesome and protected by Gorilla Glass 3. Powered by a Snapdragon Quad Core Krait processor and graphic is dealt with an Adreno GPU. But still RAM is only 2GB, it should be at least 3GB as per current Flagship device markup. When it comes to Camera HTC One M8 has a dual 4MP ultra pixel camera, although its good, but still inferior when compared to Sony and LG camera devices.

App Install Method (Requires Root):
Download the Official TWRP App (root required):
Install the app and open it. Agree to the Terms. Select TWRP Flash. Select your device from the device list (m8) and choose a version. The file will download to your Downloads folder. Browse to and select the file. Tap on Flash to Recovery. Find out more about the app here.
Current and past versions of TWRP can be found at one of the mirrors below:
TWRP Install (Requires TWRP or higher already installed):
Download the latest TWRP image file (.img) from the download link and boot TWRP. Go to install and find and select the Images button. Browse to the image that you downloaded and select it. Choose recovery and swipe to flash.
Fastboot Install Method (No Root Required):
You will need the platform-tools from the Android SDK on your computer. Download the platform-tools as per your operating system.
Windows users will need proper drivers installed on their computer. You can try the simple FWUL adb/fastboot ISO or the Naked ADB drivers or the Universal ADB drivers if you don't already have a working driver installed
On your device, go into Settings -> About and find the Build Number and tap on it 7 times to enable developer settings. Press back and go into Developer Options and enable USB debugging. From your computer, open a command prompt and type:
adb reboot bootloader
You should now be in fastboot mode.
Download the correct image file and copy the file into the same folder as your platform-tools. Rename the image to twrp.img and type:
fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
Note many devices will replace your custom recovery automatically during first boot. To prevent this, use Google to find the proper key combo to enter recovery. After typing fastboot reboot, hold the key combo and boot to TWRP. Once TWRP is booted, TWRP will patch the stock ROM to prevent the stock ROM from replacing TWRP. If you don't follow this step, you will have to repeat the install.
I confessed my love to the girl, called me in marriage, and I myself was lying on the other side. Having put Tolik's wife on the barrel, I trudged to the bathroom, and there is also a boiler, hurray. As soon as I quickly rinsed myself, pouring shampoo over myself and doused myself with cologne, so that Tanechka would not suddenly recognize the smell of.
Another woman, so already her heels were knocking and I had to go out. I put myself in order and to her, kissing passionately and receiving a kiss in return.
