Tampa Water Department Returns to Normal Disinfection Process as Liquid Oxygen Deliveries Resume

from City of Tampa · 21 hr ago

Hi neighbors, we have some good news to share! The Tampa Water Department has resumed its normal water disinfection process at the David L. Tippin Water Treatment Facility.

The Water Department uses liquid oxygen to create ozone, a powerful disinfectant that is added to the water to destroy bacteria, viruses, and other organisms. In late August, liquid oxygen was diverted to local hospitals due to the COVID pandemic. In response, the Water Department changed its primary-disinfection method from ozone to chlorine.

“Helping to ensure public health by providing safe drinking water is our top priority,” said Water Department Director Chuck Weber. “We were fortunate that we were able to quickly switchover to using chlorine as our primary way to disinfect the water. Not every water treatment plant affected by the shortage of liquid oxygen had that flexibility. The resumption of regular liquid oxygen deliveries, lets us return our normal operations.”

Although our water continued to be safe to drink, meeting all federal and state drinking water standards, the Tampa Water Department remained in close contact with our vendors and regulatory partners to re-establish regular liquid oxygen deliveries as soon as it was feasible.

The short-term diversion of liquid oxygen supplies that took place in late August impacted multiple water treatment facilities in multiple states. Fortunately, the continuing downward trend of COVID-related hospitalizations in our area has freed up the demand for liquid oxygen.

Fast Facts about the Tampa Water Department:
• We produce an average of 82 million gallons per day of drinking water
• We deliver water to over 720,000 people
• Our service area spans 211-square-miles and includes over 2,200 miles of pipes throughout the City of Tampa and parts of unincorporated Hillsborough County

Tampa launches real-time map for closed roads

TAMPA — You don't need to wait until you drive up to the barriers to find out your route to work is shut down.

The city of Tampa has launched a real-time map of road closures on its website to keep commuters in the loop.

The city has been offering email alerts on road closures for some time now but they require registration.

Tampa's new Public Road Closure Map at tampagov.net/roadclosures shows routes that are closed for maintenance and emergencies as well as those scheduled to close in the future.

Users can also enter an address and see a list of roads closed nearby, whether they're for public events, construction or emergency maintenance.

Communication staff planned on the change about three months ago and launched the map in late August. The city's Geographic Information Services division developed the map, said city spokeswoman Ashley Bauman.

On the map, affected roads are shown in bright lines, color-coded to explain whether they're fully closed or open only to through traffic. Users can click on roads for more information. A red bar, for example, showed that West Palm Avenue was closed between North Boulevard and Tampa Street due to road maintenance and will re-open on Friday.

The new feature was inspired by another map developed by the GIS division showing flooded roads, Bauman said.

The flooding map brought waves of positive feedback on social media, she said.

"We saw the popularity of the flood map and wanted to create a dynamic map that was updated in real time for road closures," Bauman said.

"We thought it would be ideal for people to look at road closures in the same way."

Similar maps on the city's website show parks, parking lot locations and calls for police service.

The city hopes the road closure map comes in handy for drivers and cyclists, as well as media traffic reporters. The map's listings for future blocked roads should help people plan better, Bauman said.

"In the past, it was just whenever we put out a traffic advisory. Now it's updated pretty much three days before a road shutdown," she said.

In the first ten days the map was available, it recorded about 4,400 page views, she said.

City staff still sends alerts via Twitter for every lane closure and posts them on its website.

Tampa, FL Traffic and Road Conditions

Q) How often is the map updated?

A) The traffic flow is updated at loadtime and upon movement outside the initial map view, or upon refresh of the page. Any incident markers are checked for updates approximately every 5-10 minutes, but you need to reload the page to load any new updates; the data provided may still be the same status/view as before. Information shown is as only reliable as how it is reported to us.

Q) The roads are backed up or closed, but the map does not show the reason why, what's the deal?

A) Municipal traffic monitors or GPS trackers may not be available, could be offline, or reports and alerts are not syndicated to media outside of the area to use on the map. This is especially true for rural areas. You are encouraged to leave a road conditions report to help others.

Q) I see traffic alerts in the box below for the state, but they aren't related to the area I'm in?

A) We attempt to display alerts as specific to the area as possible, however in some cases the data we receive will only allow us to provide it by county or even statewide.

Q) Are you an official source of traffic information?

A) We are not an official source of traffic or real-time data. We have contracts and licenses to display certain up-to-date information that comes direct from some DOTs in various states, and the traffic flow on the maps is provided by Google or MapQuest. However, the data shown here should only be used for light informational and reference purposes and not to make critical decisions. Your safest option on the web is to use your state-run traffic website, or to call the DOT traffic line for your state, local authorities, or the state's 511 number if available.
