A4 b8 turbo upgrade

A4 b8 turbo upgrade DEFAULT

APR K04-64 Turbo System - 2.0T Longitudinal - B7, B8 and B8.5 A4/A5

The APR K04 Turbocharger System is a drop in turbo upgrade that dramatically increases power. With this upgrade and accompanying software, expect power similar to a heavily tuned Golf R, S3, TT-S, and other high end vehicles, as the K04 comes standard on those vehicles. Transient response is lightning fast with minimal lag. Power comes on quick, and stays strong through the entire powerband. Best of all, the system is designed as a budget upgrade compared to larger turbocharger systems, and only requires minimal hardware, most of which is available to APR Stage 2 customers. Turbocharger: APR uses Genuine Borg Warner components. The heart of the system is a Borg Warner K04-64. The CNC-machined billet compressor wheel and stainless steel exhaust manifold are a substantial leap in technology, performance, and reliability over the factory unit. Unlike the off the shelf K04-64 unit, APR's unit is customized. We integrated the DV into the compressor cover, just like the factory turbo it replaces. In doing so, clutter and complexity is removed. The DV mounts to the turbo, eliminating several potential boost leak points. It's a simple and clean install. With many thousands of these units sold for more than a decade, we can confidently say these turbos are powerful, and reliable. Install hardware: We don't cut any corners with this system. All gaskets, nuts, bolts, washers, studs, and one time use clamps are included with this upgrade, making install as headache free as possible. Software: APR's Stage 3 K04 ECU Upgrade is included with this purchase. Please visit your applicable vehicle ECU upgrade page for more information about the software, including recommended and required hardware, power figures, and other details.

Features:

  • Big power and torque gains
  • OEM K04 drop-in turbo
  • Genuine Borg Warner components
  • DV integrated into the compressor cover
  • High quality materials and components throughout
  • ECU software included

Thread: Turbo upgrade options

    Turbo upgrade options

I looked up lots of threads, but none got an exact answer. So what are the Turbo upgrade options? Of course I have seen the RAI motorsports and APR's K04. how safe is the RAI motorsports turbo kit for the car? Is there any other options?

Right now, that seems to be it. If you look at the B7 section, there are some good conversations going on with RAI and the new Eurodyne software, Maestro to custom tune/self tune. Seems like RAI really knows their stuff, and will likely use that for the B8s vs the current Unitronic tune. I think Dame Drizzo (sp??) is the only one with the RAI kit with the B8, and has nothing against them, but the Unitronic tune side (please correct if wrong). A couple of the B7 guys seem really happy with RAI's K0R set up...plus they have a pretty good reputation. Just not much activity for the B8 yet...

This would be a good thread to update/edit with new options as they come up (I think this is what you are thinking).

EDIT: here is the link from the B7 page: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...une-vs-Maestro

The K04 upgrade was a reasonable solution for the old 2.0T that had a K03.

The B8's 2.0 TFSI is equipped with an IHI turbo that is more efficient than the old K03. A K04 is only a marginal improvement over our stock turbo. Too bad some tuners seem content to serve up old solutions that are not much of an improvement over the IHI turbo.

That RAI setup at least allows use of some proper turbos. The GTX28 variants spool very fast. Driven a GTI with one and was very impressed. K03 and K04's are cheap OLD technology compared to what's available to us now. Can't wait for Garrett to release an appropriately sized GTX-R. Then we'll start seeing some REAL B8 A4 engine tuning.

Anybody's guess. If I was purely racing the Avant, I'd be pressuring Garret for a prototype.

Garret recently announced the new GTX-R in sizes that are too big for our use. 6 months? A year? IDK...

We just need to see the R tech trickle down to the smaller A/R turbine housings for this to become feasible for us.

At least in this end the biggest issue is the lack of custom softwares for B8's, there are plenty of shops willing and able install a bigger turbo (of btw which there are plenty good options for 2litre displacement ) but obviously they are useless without a tune to go with them...

  • 08-13-2012 04:20 PM#9

its coming guys. We are working on something really cool right now. I just managed to get a few projects done, and now my attention is fully dedicated to the b8. Their is a lot happening fast right now. I am literally waiting on the fabrication guys to finish up a turbo back exhaust so i can get to work.

We have a lot of "theoretical" things that will finally be proven. This is also testing our Red Label turbo system. For those that do not know the Red label is a lower cost BT solution. Black label is our premium setup.

    Upcoming testing will address:

    Injector upgrades
    Low Pressure Fuel Pump Upgrades
    ECU Tuning
    Block Build configurations
    Turbo system configuration
Emission system removals ( off road only )

Please be patient! Here is a screenshot of my other monitor...

While it might be old tech, I'd say there's an argument for "known good" old tech such as the K04. For those that drive their cars to work daily, hey, there's not much to argue when you have fairly well proven reliability and stout gains. It's not 350hp, but it's still a lot of fun.

yes, we dont really want to support the old GT turbo's. The GTX series allow us to use smaller turbo's that move more air then larger GT's. Example being the GTX2867r can move as much air as the GT3071r. We are starting to believe that the older GT turbo's were a bit overrated and the new GTX line is underrated.

The one on their site now is the Red Label kit. Same as you'll find here: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...abel-Turbo-Kit

We are building this kit around a GTX2867R w/ internal wastegate, since it has a very wide power range, with the two different exhaust housing A/Rs.
    As for spool:

On a stock engine setup, we'd recommend a .64 A/R turbine, which actually achieves peak torque earlier than the stock K03, on our testing we did with a Mk5 FSI.

So you will have a powerband VERY similar to your stock turbo setup, but capable of 300awhp on low boost
So I venture, it won't be too different from the IHI/K03.

This is what I'm talking about.

Yeah, I have an efr turbo though. It's a little different than a gtx but it's comparable. I'm doing about 330 whp with low boost, 22 psi, but this gtx is crazy. Gtx is being made because efr are on back order but gtx is the fav of the guys at RAI . Why spend almost the same amount on k04 to have only 250-260 whp? With stage 2 with stock turbo I made about 230 so 100 whp gain is pretty serious. For all of you who are on the fence, if you live on the east coast come by and I'll show you what a b8 is REALLY capable of. Can't wait to install my rods and pistons and maestro tune!!

Let's put it like this.. I destroy stock b8 s4's.. What more can you really ask for?! I have NEVER EVER lost a race against ANYTHING. G37xs full bolt ons, camaro v8 full bolt ons tune etc. I love my car and if you had whatbi had you would never ever want to getbrid of it. The quality of RAI MOTORSPORT turbo builds are second to none! RAI are true innovators !! If you guys even had a CLUE of how long the r & d was to make these kits you would shit your pants. IMHO , with me standing to gain ABOSLUTLEY NOTHING, RAI is the best kit out on the market.

Disclaimer - I do NOT receive ANYTHING in return for me praising RAI . I have been dealing with them since 2009 and have nothing but positive things to say. The gtx was also tested on my car, I believe, and that's my car in the RAI photos on their site. Ray is one of the coolest guys I have ever met and his goal is to make better products for less than the competition. RAI is one of the only companies that didn't forgetbabout our platform and if you want it to advance, support the cause !

Thanks for that info. I have been seriously concerned about the ability of the 6 speed tiptronic to be able to transfer power without slippage.

I need to get my wrenches laid out I think...

im waiting on money to do this! i dont really care about warranty anymore. im just wondering if its worth a BT or id rather just have a bigger engine from stock.

like for instance some guy dropped a boss 302 engine in a mazda we saw at angles crest. i mean just picture the B8 sounding like a muscle car, with a H/O V8 in the bay.

Whats the estimated total damage for this? I'd probably want to utilize the downpipe/exhaust I have as much as possible so potentially only the manifold+turbo+SW would be the low baller set I am after?

If bigger injectors/uprated fuel pump are required these should go into the package too. Race cat downpipe would not hurt either but would feel like waste seen I have the Eurocode DP now.

Operator - thanks again for the answers!

RAI - Looking forward to it! My hold up all along as been loosing too much of the low-revs torque, because, if I am honest, I spend 99% of my time below 3k. But that 1% needs to be a blast haha.
