Bullpup assault rifle

The VHS (Croatian: Višenamjenska Hrvatska Strojnica—"multifunctional Croatian machine gun") is a 5.56×45mm NATObullpupassault rifle designed and manufactured by HS Produkt of Croatia. The VHS rifle was first introduced at the 2007 iKA exhibition, the annual Croatian innovation display that takes place in the city of Karlovac.[6] The development began from a request from the Croatian Army for a new infantry rifle to update the individual equipment to NATO standards.

A new and improved version of the VHS rifle, known as the VHS-2, was introduced in April 2013.

History

Development

The development of the new assault rifle began in 1992, during the Croatian War of Independence, when HS Produkt (then called IM Metal) created a bullpup variant of the 7.62 mm Kalashnikov assault rifle.[2][7] This rifle had a number of flaws, partly caused by limited technological capabilities of IM Metal, but provided a valuable learning experience for the company.[2][7] A delayed blowback model was tested in the mid-1990s, but the results were still not satisfactory, and it was superseded by a design similar to the M16 rifle.[7] More prototypes followed in 1996, 1999 and 2004.[2]

The development cycle that ultimately led to the current version of the rifle started circa 2003.[7] A new prototype, externally quite similar to the French FAMAS, was publicly announced in 2005 and presented to the Croatian Minister of DefenseBerislav Rončević.[6][7][8][9] However, the difference between the production model that followed and the 2004 prototype is more than 90%.[2]

Evaluation and adoption

On November 19, 2007, the Croatian Ministry of Defence placed an order for an experimental batch of 50 rifles to be tested by the Croatian contingent then deployed in Afghanistan within the ISAF. Other nations, including Kuwait[10] and Venezuela[11] have shown interest in acquiring the rifle.

On November 24, 2008, HS Produkt introduced the final version of the VHS assault rifle. The first 40 rifles have been produced for testing. After the initial testing phase, an order for 1000 rifles was made. In 2009 additional batch of 2,000 rifles was made to enter service with the Croatian Army and by the end of 2012, and as of 2013 the Croatian army had 3,600 VHS rifles in service, with the final batch of 2,000 rifles to be delivered to the Croatian military by the end of 2014. A long term Croatian Army requirement calls for 50,000 assault rifles, ensuring the long term production of VHS-2 rifles even if no export orders are ever made, although the US Department of Defense made an order for 500 VHS rifles.[12]

On May 12, 2009, the Croatian Minister of Defence Branko Vukelić confirmed the positive conclusions of a series of torture tests and on May 15 officially signed a contract with HS product for the acquisition of 1,000 rifles (both variants). As of 2015, the Croatian Army is using 7,000 VHS rifles.[13]

Design

The VHS-D rifle is 765 mm (30.1 in) long, with a 500 mm (20 in) barrel.[5] the whole rifle body is a monoblock construction made from high-impact polymer.[14] Externally, it strongly resembles the French FAMAS rifle, but both its functioning mechanism and disassembling mode are quite different.[15] The VHS-K is a carbine variant with a shorter 410 mm (16 in) barrel, resulting in overall length of 665 mm (26.2 in).

The early project won the IKA innovation prize for its interesting feature.[citation needed]

Some characteristics of the rifle were not revealed to the public early on and so some misconceptions occurred through the development period: there was word about a sort of recoil buffer in the form of a venting system that recovered part of the gases generated by the shot and pushed it back in a space located behind the bolt; during the cycle, the bolt would thus "bounce" on a sort of "gas cushion" that acted as a buffer, dramatically reducing recoil. That provoked more than a disappointment as the production-stage VHS was reported to operate in a much more conventional manner no longer utilizing this buffering system.[8] According to the project deposited at the European Patent Office however it seems that such voices originated from a misconception of related data, i.e. merging in one two different features: a forced air ventilation system similar to the one in Pecheneg machine gun and a mechanical buffer reductor, similar in conception but not identical to the one used in Ultimax 100, a weapon Croatia used in Croatian War of Independence and still has in its reserve inventory. The same patent states also that Vehesica works neither through direct gas impingement nor through a short or long-stroke piston, but through a 'tappet' type of closed gas system much like the FN SCAR. There it was also another precedent design sporting some of said features, but it was rejected after the first real testing, so it is also possible that the "gas cushion" was instead a feature of that former model.

Confusion on the VHS's operating system was from several changes to the type of system used through its development. The first models used a Kalashnikov-style long-stroke piston, which was changed in 1999 to a lever delayed blowback system from the FAMAS. The next year, it was changed to a direct gas impingement system with a forced ventilation feature that formed a pneumatic cushion behind the bolt. The VHS was patented in that form in 2000 giving the impression of a "gas cushion" feature. That model was publicly known up to 2005. In 2004, the final and current operating system of the VHS was changed to a gas-operated, short-stroke piston system.[16]

When the VHS went through service life testing it fired 50,000 rounds without suffering any main parts breaking. The barrel has a birdcage flash suppressor and can fire rifle grenades. Like the FAMAS, it has a sliding grenade boom guide and grenade high-angle launching sight to aim when the rifle is turned on its side, but the sight is mounted on the underside of the carrying handle on the VHS instead of under it. The rifle and carbine have different gas regulators, both with three settings changed by pushing in and turning 120 degrees: normal; high (larger opening for weak ammunition); and cut-off (for rifle grenades).[16]

One of the problems with the VHS is poor ergonomics. The fire selector has three positions for safe, semi, and automatic fire with no 3-round burst option. Production model rifles have the selector inside the trigger guard. Changing firing modes is difficult as the crank must be rotated a long distance before either firing mode is selected. It is also for right-handed use only; the receiver can only eject shells out the right side and cases leave toward the rear sharply. There is even the chance of spent cases hitting the shooter's arm depending on elbow positioning. These are unusual features, as the non-reciprocating cocking handle is located centrally under the carrying handle and is flexible to be pulled from either side.[16]

Models presented in 2008 showed the VHS being STANAG magazine compatible. This was changed shortly after to accept HK G36 magazines. The reason was because the Croatian military has more G36s (which the VHS will replace) than M16-type rifles.[16]

VHS-2

A new assault rifle known as the VHS-2 was shown to the public for the first time in April 2013, during the Adriatic Sea Defense & Aerospace (ASDA) exhibition in Split, Croatia. The new weapon is an improved version of the VHS rifle which retains its bullpup design, caliber and barrel length, as well as the internal mechanism, but introduces a new, more conventional fire selector, a redesigned carrying handle, an adjustable-length buttstock, and an ambidextrous cartridge casings ejection system that can be configured for either right or left side ejection in less than a minute.[17][18][19][20]

Evaluators

  •  France: For testing purposes several rifles were sold. A variant specifically produced for French military trials, the VHS-F2, was shortlisted by the French MOD to supply 100,000 assault rifles; a magazine well accommodating the FAMAS magazine was manufactured in the event it was adopted.[26] The other submission, the HK416, ultimately won the bid.[27]
  •  Romania: Ongoing negotiations about local production and technology transfer.[21]
  •  United States: Purchased 500 VHS-1 for testing and training in 2012, and 250 VHS-2 for testing and training in 2015.[28]

The VHS-D2 is a Croatian assault rifle. It is a significantly improved version of the previous VHS-D. It was designed and is manufactured by the HS Produkt company. This weapon was first publicly revealed in 2013. Some sources report that it has been adopted by Croatian armed forces, however this information has not been confirmed. This weapon is being proposed for various export customers. It has been exported to Iraq and possibly some other countries.

The VHS-D2 is a gas operated weapon with a bullpup layout. It is chambered for a standard NATO 5.56x45 mm ammunition. Weapon's housing is made of impact resistant polymer.

This weapon has completely ambidextrous handling. A fire mode selector is ambidextrous and located above the pistol grip. It has setting for "safe", "semi-auto" and "full-auto". Cocking handle is also ambidextrous, so the weapon can be cocked with either hand. Also the VHS-D2 has selectable left or right side cartridge ejection. Ejection window is on both sides.

This assault rifle is fed from transparent plastic magazines, that hold 30 rounds. This handy features allows to check how much rounds remain in the magazine, without disconnecting it from the weapon. A couple of magazines can be clamped together for faster reloading. This feature was borrowed from the HK G36. The VHS-D2 assault rifle is also compatible with the standard NATO M16-type magazines.

There is a Picatinny-type rail over the carrying handle for mounting various scopes or night vision sights. Also there are iron sights with a sighting range of up to 500 m. The rear sight is adjustable with 100 m increments. Range of effective fire is around 500 meters with iron sights and around 600 meters, when fitted with optics.

Buttstock of the VHS-D2 was redesigned and can be adjusted to suit the shooter. There are standard Picatinny-type rails on the sides and underneath the foregrip for mounting various accessories.

The VHS-D2 can mount a bayonet. Alternatively it can be fitted with a VHS-BG 40-mm underbarrel grenade launcher, which can be also used as a standalone weapon. It can launch grenades up to a range of 450 m. This assault rifle can also launch rifle grenades. Flash hider can be used to fire through the barbed wire.

Variants

VHS-D2 CT-1.5X is a version with a built-in 1.5x magnification optical sight. This weapon has got a different carrying handle. This version is slightly heavier than the baseline model.

VHS-K2 compact assault rifle / carbine. It has a shorter barrel. Otherwise it is similar to the VHS-D. This compact rifle is not compatible with underbarrel grenade launcher or bayonet.

VHS-K2 CT-1.5X is a compact assault rifle / carbine with a built-in 1.5x magnification optical sight. This version is slightly heavier.

VHS-2 is a new family of assault rifles, designed and produced in Croatia by the HS Products company. This range includes two basic versions of the infantry rifle – ‘standard size’ VHS D2 rifles and ‘compact’ VHS K2 rifles. Each version can be produced with basic iron sights, or with built-in (integrated) 1.5X telescopic sight.

VHS-2 rifles were first introduced to public in 2013, and are based on the 1st generation of VHS rifles now in service with Croatian military. Despite external similarities, VHS-2 rifles include numerous modifications to warrant a separate description. The two most important upgrades of the VHS-2 over its predecessor are completely ambidextrous handling (including ejection windows on both sides) and buttstock with adjustable length of pull. There are other minor adjustments.

Technical Details:

The basic VHS-2 assault rifle is a gas operated, select-fire weapon with rotary bolt locking and a manual gas regulator. It features dual ejection windows on both sides of the receiver, so the user can select which side to eject the spent cartridges. However, this  operation does require partial disassembly of the gun.

All controls (safety / fire selector, charging handle, bolt hold-open device release lever, magazine catch) are ambidextrous as well. The polymer receiver is equipped with an adjustable buttpad that allows for change of length of pull up to 5 cm (2”). This rifle is available either with an integrated MIL-STD-1913 (Picatinny) rail above the receiver and back-up iron sight on removable bases, or with integrated 1.5X optical telescopic sight. An indigenous 40mm grenade launcher can be mounted below the barrel. These rifles are compatible with most types of STANAG (M16-type) magazines. Magazine housing is provided with ambidextrous paddle-type magazine release located just behind the magazine.

VHS-2 is a fully ambidextrous 5.56 NATO caliber assault rifle. Designed on bullpup modular platform it maintain all the ballistic benefits of a longer barrel in a shorter package without sacrificing overall length, accuracy and muzzle velocity. The polymer receiver is equipped with an 5 point adjustable buttstock. Combination of all of this with dual dust cover ejection ports on both sides of the receiver and specially designed empy case deflectors create flexible and user friendly multi-purpose rifle. The rifle is equipped either with an carrying handle with NATO STANAG 4694 rail and flip up iron sights or with integrated 1.5X optical red dot sight. Front handguard has NATO STANAG 4694 rails at the 3, 6, and 9 o’clock positions with removable rail covers so the rifle can accept extra accesories. Magazines are made of durable polymer with semi transparent pattern and 30 rounds capacity allowing the operator to quickly view the ammunition count without removing the magazine. VHS-2 uses proved short-stroke gas piston operating system with rotating bolt. The rifle can fit VHS-BG 40 mm single shot grenade launcher under the barrel. VHS-2 is coming in two different versions: VHS-2D 500 mm barrel lenght designated marksman version with effective range up to 800 m and VHS-2K 410 mm barrel lenght standard base version.

About Assault Rifle Type VHS cal. 5,56x45mm

    Description and Application

Assault Rifle Type VHS, is designed, constructed and produced completely in Croatia. It is manufactured in two sub-types: VHS-D which represents the longer version and VHS-K which is the shorter version. Assault Rifle Type VHS use standard NATO cal.5,56x45mm cartridges.

Assault Rifle Type VHS is designed and constructed strictly for military and police use, with it's employment against enemy live force and light armoured vehicles. The configuration of VHS Rifle use Bull pup principle in which the action and magazine are located behind the trigger and alongside the shooter's face, so there is no wasted space for the butt stock as in conventional designs. This permits a shorter firearm length for the same barrel length. Result is saving weight of the weapon and increasing manoeuvrability of the soldier. Such increased manoeuvrability becomes important in confined spaces, during transport, during combat in urban environments etc. In comparison with other assault rifles Assault Rifle Type VHS is up to 25% shorter in length, while at the same time it’s efficiency by muzzle velocity is 10% higher. The small total mass of Assault Rifle Type VHS is also significant as it is one of the lightest assault rifles today.

    Accessories

Assault Rifle Type VHS use standard NATO cartridge magazines for 30 and for 20 rounds, manufactured in black transparent polymer what enables permanent visual control of the cartridge resources.

Assault Rifle Type VHS has standard mechanical sight integrated within upper rifle handle.
By adequate Picatinny rails the Assault Rifle Type VHS may be equipped with various optical and opto-electronic/laser sighting devices, flash lights etc.
Assault Rifle Type VHS is equipped with rifle grenade barrel extension and sight which both enables use of NATO standard rifle grenades.
An Under-barrel Grenade Launcher of standard NATO cal. 40mm use is enabled with the Assault Rifle Type VHS. Under-barrel Grenade Launcher substitutes the front grip and becomes integrated part of the assault rifle. It uses the sight which is already integrated within standard rifle sight.
For close hand-to-hand combat Assault Rifle Type VHS may be equipped by multipurpose knife, which mounted on the rifle becomes a bayonet, and combined with knife case derivates into barbed wire scissors.
With use of special blank ammunition muzzle adapter unlimited use of blank ammunition is possible maintaining main and standard characteristics of the rifle.
Detachable bi-pod may be added to the Assault Rifle Type VHS in order to increase rifle stability while firing.

    Functioning Principles, Use and Handling

Assault Rifle Type VHS fires in automatic mode and semi-automatic mode. Rifle automatic works on gas returning principle through the channel in the barrel's wall. There is 3-position regulator of the returning gases. Reloading handle is placed over the barrel box. When the gun is fired reloading handle stays stable. The best shooting results are achieved by semi-automatic or automatic fire at distances up-to 400m with use of standard NATO cartridges of cal.5,56x45mm.

    Safety Features

Safety lever is fire mode selector at the same time, it is integrated within trigger guard to be as much protected as it could be, it has 3 positions for locked, automatic and semi-automatic.

    Technik[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]
