As 2020 winds down and everyone looks ahead to what the next year will bring, it’s a good time in the home design world to check out paint brands’ picks for 2021 Color — or Colors — of the Year. Pantone recently unveiled its selection, a sunny yellow and midgray duo, so let’s see what other colors we might see more of in the coming year.
1. Aegean Teal From Benjamin Moore

Soft and soothing Aegean Teal is Benjamin Moore’s Color of the Year and one of 12 hues selected for its 2021 trends palette. All the colors in the palette are inspired by nature and are meant to convey warmth and well-being.

I’ve recommended this particular paint color many times for the interiors and exteriors of my clients’ homes. It’s a fresh take on a neutral, colorful without being too bright, and saturated without being too heavy. It’s equally at home on interior walls as it is on exterior siding. In a kitchen, it’s a softer alternative to popular navy blue for cabinetry.

2. Urbane Bronze From Sherwin-Williams

Here’s another go-to hue in the arsenal I use as a color consultant. Urbane Bronze is a rich and elegant hybrid of brown and dark gray, of dark wood and metal tones. It’s the ultimate earth tone, the color of the fertile soil in the Midwestern farming town where I grew up. It’s also solid and comforting, a terrific accent or trim color that can be paired with warm or cool hues. When it’s combined with plenty of warm whites, as shown in this bedroom, the result is dramatic yet soothing.

3. Passionate From HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams

This juicy hue is one of 10 colors in HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams’ 2021 Color Collection of the Year. Passionate was picked as the top-trending hue of the bunch for its warm and welcoming ways. Red tends to stimulate our hearts, minds and appetites, so this red wine hue is good for a dining room, living room, office or any other space where animated conversations tend to occur.
4. Earth’s Harmony From Dutch Boy

Chosen to evoke clear blue skies on a beautiful day, Earth’s Harmony is Dutch Boy’s pick for 2021. A pure bright blue that helps bring the feeling of the outdoors in, it could be a welcoming option for those sheltering in place with winter weather bearing down.

Nine additional colors round out the company’s 2021 trends palette, which is equal parts bold, fresh and soothing.
5. Aqua Fiesta From Glidden

Taking a slightly different approach from other paint brands, Glidden has named an Accent Color of the Year for 2021, and it’s a vibrant aquamarine. Neutrals stand the test of time better than bold accent colors, so I think it’s a great idea to focus on the latter when promoting trendy hues.

Use Aqua Fiesta to play up interesting architectural elements, as was done with the wainscoting in this room, or put it on the front door for a splash of tropical blue as a greeting hue.
6. Transcend, Big Cypress and Misty Aqua From PPG Paints

PPG Paints also went in a different direction this year by choosing not just one but three colors, comprising its 2021 Paint Color Palette of the Year.

Transcend is a warm latte color that serves as the main, neutral backdrop to bolder Big Cypress, a saturated terra cotta, andMisty Aqua, a watery blue. The palette evokes a trip to the seashore with the combined colors of the sea, sand and coral.
7. 2021 Color Trend Stories From Dunn-Edwards Paints

Dunn-Edwards Paints chose a whopping 60 colors, broken down into five distinct palettes with 12 colors apiece. Shown here is a selection from Lagom, which is a Swedish term for the virtue of moderation and balance. It’s a nature-inspired palette that features soft mineral hues with a sprinkling of more saturated colors.

I can see Silver Creek or Dolphin Tales used as a neutral base for the more striking Navajo Turquoise and Growth.
8. Color Trends 2021 From Behr

Behr is ushering in 21 colors for 2021. They’re a mix of warm and cool hues, and most are quite rich and saturated.
Shown here is a sampling of Behr’s selections: Voyage on the ceiling, Smoky White on the walls and Broadway on the window frame.

This illustrates one of my favorite and unexpected ways to use a vibrant or saturated color: on the ceiling. It really pulls you into a room by drawing the eye up and, if the vibrant color is paired with a light neutral on the walls, gives a space a fun, colorful look without feeling heavy or overwhelming.
9. 2021 Colors of the Year From Valspar

Valspar also chose a nearly equal mix of warm and cool hues, but its 12 picks are slightly more muted than Behr’s.

'Hear' Valspar’s 2021 Colors of the Year with 'Sound of Color' Palette

Valspar, from the Sherwin-Williams Consumer Brands Group, announced “The Sound of Color” inspired by its 2021 Colors of the Year.

As people are seeking solace and calm like never before, Valspar is empowering us to take control of our environments and shape them to support our best selves.

The 2021 Colors of the Year, announced in Sept. 2020, are 12 livable shades that evoke calm, serenity and simplicity, and were specially curated to help us take charge of physical spaces so they foster our best mental space. Especially now that our homes have become our offices, our entertainment centers, and even classrooms –– the colors, sights, and sounds that surround us are more critical than ever.

Valspar is partnering with author, sound therapist and meditation teacher Sara Auster to bring consumers into the world of color through a multi-sensory experience. Her work includes calming visuals, unique sounds, and a one-of-a-kind color meditation experience. Auster has spent the past decade introducing sound baths to audiences across the globe.

“I'm grateful for the opportunity to work with an iconic paint brand like Valspar,” Auster said. “Collaborating to bring these color meditations to life for each of the 2021 Colors of the Year was a truly unique experience. I hope these moments of pause we have created help consumers connect to comfort and wellbeing.”

Valspar chose to partner with Auster for “The Sound of Color” because of her original teaching methods and transformative experiences. In today’s world, the colors, sights and sounds that surround us are more critical than ever before, and Valspar knew Auster’s ability to convert colors into soothing, calming, and uplifting experiences would connect with consumers.

“This was a revolutionary idea for Valspar, taking the signature colors the brand is known for and creating a multi-sensory experience that goes much deeper than colors on a paint swatch,” said Sue Kim, Valspar color marketing manager. “We are very pleased with how this project turned out and think our customers will really enjoy interacting with our 2021 Colors of the Year on a whole new level.”

When forecasting the 2021 Colors of the Year, the color experts at Valspar observed global lifestyle trends that have shifted significantly from last year. The rise in external stressors has correlated with consumer’s increased interest in mindfulness and self-care activities.

Yoga, meditation, aromatherapy and other practices have gained traction and moved from fringe to mainstream in the past decade. In 2019 more than 20% of employers offered a mindfulness program – and that accelerated significantly throughout 2020.

Each of the twelve 2021 Colors of the Year includes a guided visualization and a breath practice experience. Six of the colors include meditations to calm, relax and soothe while the other six colors include meditations to focus, energize and uplift.

Valspar’s 2021 Colors of the Year Inspired by Mindfulness and Wellbeing

CHICAGO — Leading paint and coatings brand, Valspar, from the Sherwin-Williams Consumer Brands Group, announced its 2021 Colors of the Year with 12 livable shades that evoke calm, serenity and simplicity. With this palette, Valspar seeks to empower consumers to take control of their environments and create spaces that will expand their worlds, calm their minds and enrich their lives.

When forecasting the 2021 Colors of the Year, the color experts at Valspar observed global lifestyle trends that have shifted significantly from last year. The rise in external stressors has correlated with consumers’ increased interest for mindfulness and self-care activities. Since a physical space can directly impact a person’s mindset, this year’s colors have been selected to bring a sense of wellbeing to walls, ultimately blending home improvement with self-improvement. Valspar’s 2021 Colors of The Year help take the guesswork out of color selection, so that consumers can easily navigate DIY projects and take charge of their physical spaces.

“Our homes have become offices, entertainment centers and classrooms – which means the colors, sights and sounds in our rooms have an even bigger impact on our daily lives,” said Sue Kim, Valspar Color Marketing Manager. “These lifestyle changes coupled with a surge in DIY home activity helped guide our selection of a range of colors for Valspar’s 2021 Colors of the Year that can not only transform your space but also elevate your mood.”

Each of our 12 trending hues cultivates a sense of calm and comfort that creates the ideal backdrop for mindfulness practices. In early 2020, web searches for meditation saw significant lift as a response to stress and uncertainty related to the pandemic. Also, according to Google Trends, web searches directly correlated with home improvement have increased over 25% compared to the same time last year. With do-it-yourselfers in many areas of the United States continuing to spend more time at home compared to past years, Valspar projects that this renewed focus on improving interiors will extend well into 2021 and beyond.

Valspar has curated these 12 Colors of the Year to include a range of shades that provide flexibility and can be incorporated into existing design elements of the home. For the second year in a row, the 12 Valspar Colors of the Year were photographed in people’s homes, giving the colors and images an aesthetic that represents the lifestyles of today’s paint buyer.

Valspar’s 2021 Colors of the Year Aim to Bring Serenity and Calm into Your Space

Valspar’s 2021 colors of the year are very much a reflection of 2020. Homeowners and designers have faced a bevy of external stressors during this tumultuous year, and Valspar’s new 12-color collection aims to bring serenity and calm to any built environment—“blending home improvement with self-improvement,” according to a press release.

When curating this collection, the team at Valspar observed how consumers’ lifestyles at home have changed in 2020—from more time spent at home to an increased affinity for DIY projects—and they also looked at general trends in fashion, technology, and sustainability and how these categories are moving and shifting for 2021.

“We want consumers to feel healing through these colors,” says Sue Kim, color marketing manager for Valspar. “Each color has its own personality and mood. And each color is carefully selected to reflect that mindfulness and self-care.”

As the design aesthetics between home and an office or hotel environment continue to blur, commercial and hospitality designers will find these colors especially helpful when looking to design a more serene space.

The collection includes natural blues, strong neutrals and plenty of warm tones.

“I really believe blues are coming in strong for the next five years and even this next decade,” Kim says. “I really love Blissful Blue—it has a great natural feel to it…We explored a lot of warm tones too. Vintage colors we’re familiar with. Colors like Maple Leaf that are more earthy and authentic. Almost evoking the imagery of pottery, but not muddy, really more yellow and orange tones to make it more livable.”

THE COLORS OF THE YEAR 2021 - Color Trends 2021 - Valspar Paint

2021’s Palette of Possibilities

The 2021 colors of the year from major paint brands include a rich and varied palette of vivid reds, calming blues and dramatic earth tones that both bolster and soothe our senses.

“Color is extremely important, and people are looking for ways to make their home more joyful,” says Gary Inman, owner of Gary Inman Interior Design and an advisor to the High Point Market Style Spotters, a group that tracks home-fashion trends.

The HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams 2021 color of the year, Passionate, a bold red that’s part of the Delightfully Daring color collection, is a prime example. “As we spend more time at home, we’ve begun to uncover what truly makes us happy,” the Sherwin-Williams website explains. “[We’re] immersing ourselves into the colors and experiences that feed our soul.” Farrow & Ball’s Preference Red strikes a similar vein.

Pantone, the global color authority, selected two independent colors: Ultimate Gray and Illuminating, the latter a vibrant, cheerful yellow, as its 2021 colors. According to Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, their picks highlight how different elements come together to express a message of hope and fortitude, while injecting a dose of sunshine and positivity in any room.

Also making waves are the blue-green in both Aegean Teal, Benjamin Moore’s 2021 color of the year, and Aqua Fiesta, Glidden’s first-ever accent color of the year. For a truer blue, there are Behr’s Jean Jacket Blue and Nocturne Blue; Valspar’s Blissful Blue and Lucy Blue; and Farrow & Ball’s Ultra Marine and Pitch Blue, with the latter described as “a strong cobalt blue, with a dose of black pigment, that takes its name from the dark sticky tar often used in roofing."

In addition, “there is an embrace of organic materials and colors as a response to COVID,” Inman explains. “Nature equals serenity and safety.” An example is Sherwin-Williams’ 2021 color of the year, Urbane Bronze, a saturated gray-brown.

“Autumn colors like cognac, cinnamon and burnt orange are very strong, and will be for a few seasons,” Inman adds. Think Behr’s Maple Glaze, Saffron Strands and Cellini Gold, as well as Valspar’s Maple Leaf.

In a twist, PPG has selected its first-ever color palette of the year, which is a trio. Transcend, described on the company’s website as “a midtone oatmeal-colored hue”; Big Cypress, “a shaded ginger”; and Misty Aqua, “a watercolor cerulean blue,” are all part of 14 natural hues grouped in this year’s most apt name: Be Well.
