Newport 55 trolling motor

Newport 55 trolling motor DEFAULT

It’s one thing to get the best trolling motor…

It’s quite another to get the best trolling motor for YOU.

senior man fishing on an inflatable boat with trolling motor

Everyone knows Minn Kota is the top dog in the trolling motor world. They edge out even their closest competitor Motorguide.

Unfortunately, their prices can be a real turn off.

It gets a lot of people searching for alternatives.

Alternatives such as Newport Vessels.

Newport Vessels is turning into a BIG name in the inflatable boat scene. With their trolling motor line-up, they are set to take on Minn Kota.

But you’re surely wondering:

  • How good is Newport Vessels?
  • How do they compare to Minn Kota?
  • Should I save money and get Newport? Or is Minn Kota worth the extra $?

Today, I’m going to answer all those questions (and more) for you.

By the end of this article, you’ll know exactly which one is better for YOU.

Let’s go.

Table of Contents

Newport Vessels vs Minn Kota – 7 Things You Need to Know

If these two trolling motors battle, Minn Kota will always come out on top.

They have:

  • Better quality
  • More options
  • A stack of features
  • Second-to-none customer service

So instead of pitting them head-to-head, I’ll give you 7 facts you need to know about these two companies.

This will clear up any confusion and help you decide what YOU want.

1. ALL Newport Vessels Motors are Saltwater-Ready

Saltwater trolling motors are hard to come by.

If you’re hitting the beach, this can be quite frustrating.

Yes, they are out there. But you have way fewer options for these.

Even Minn Kota only has one transom saltwater motor, the Riptide(the rest are bow-mounts).

Contrast that to Newport Vessels, where ALL their motors are saltwater-proof.

From their original L-series to their latest and greatest NV-series, nothing rusts in the sea.

inflatable boat on the beach

This is one of their biggest selling points.

Who would’ve thought sea trolling motors could be so affordable?

2. Newport Vessels are Made in China…

Do you wonder how some brands can charge so little for their products?

Sometimes (actually, a lot of times), it’s because these products are made in China.

Does this mean Newport Vessels’ quality is trash?

Heck no.

If you thought made in China = horrible quality, you need to change your perspective a bit.

Check out what Insight Quality has to say about this:

“While there are low-quality goods coming out of China, there are also well-known brands like Apple, Coach, and Armani making products that are regarded as high quality and that command high prices.” – Insight Quality

It’s a lot cheaper to manufacture a motor in China than here in the US (high-quality or low).

However, I will say that you can tell Newport is made in China.

When you put a Newport side-by-side with a Minn Kota, you will see some small differences in quality. Differences such as flimsy parts, plastic parts, or just a general it-could-have-been-made-better.

No big deal. But this is what separates good motors from excellent motors.

3. …But Newport Vessels Has Great Customer Service

Minn Kota is the KING of customer service.

On top of their ultra-helpful website, you can also:

  • Shoot them an email
  • Call them for help
  • Get in touch through live chat
  • Visit one of their MANY service providers all over the States

Plus, they always go over and above for their customers.

Then there’s Newport Vessels.

Now you might think that because NV is made in China, their customer service sucks.

Well, it doesn’t.

One thing that separates Newport Vessels from other made-in-China brands is their great customer service.

In fact, they’re almost toe-to-toe with Minn Kota at this.

They have an excellent website, and you can contact them through email, phone, and live chat.

No, they don’t have service centers around the country. However, they do have stocks of replacement parts ready to ship out.

It’s not ideal to have the manufacturer thousands of miles away in China. But with their loaded warehouse in San Rafael, California, Newport Vessels is always ready to serve you.

4. Minn Kota has the Most Complete Line-Up

Transom motors,

Bow motors,

Engine motors,

You name it, Minn Kota has got it.

Freshwater?

Saltwater?

Rough water?

They have motors for all types of water.

What about Newport Vessels you ask?

All Newport Vessels are saltwater proof. Other than that, they lack options and features.

To date, there are only four models available – and they’re all transom motors.

What’s more (or should I say, less), NV doesn’t have a lot of features.

The most modern features they have are a 5-point LED battery meter (for super-accurate battery measurement), and a vertically adjustable motor-head (only in their X-series).

Contrast that to Minn Kota which has a dozen models – each with a different set of specs and features.

Whether you want the simple Endura…

Or the feature-packed, state-of-the-art Ultrex…

Buy on Amazon

Minn Kota has what you need.

5. Minn Kota has Complex Designs (Sometimes Too Complex)

Before you grab that Ulterra with MEGA Down Imaging, ask yourself…

Buy on Amazon

“Do I need this?”

Yes, complex features like these are cool to have (see it in action with this video)

MEGA Down Imaging | The Technological Angler

On second thought though, some people wonder, “Is this really what fishing has come to? Using sophisticated tools to get as many fish as possible?”

For these people, it’s a bit too much.

Some people prefer to have a traditional fishing trip with a simple motor. And that’s exactly what Newport Vessels delivers.

Plus, their designs are so fool-proof, you don’t need to be a mechanic to repair them. (check out my guide on how to wire trolling motors here)

I’m not saying one is better than the other. If you’re tech-savvy and want the most modern fishing experience, Minn Kota will be perfect for you.

But if all you want is a simple fishing trip – or if you’re not into fishing at all – you don’t need these complex features.

6. Newport Vessels’ Motors are a Lot Cheaper

No surprise here.

For all the hyper-modern state-of-the-art technology, you can expect hefty price tags.

But if you go for basic designs that work (and are made in China), you can save tons of cash.

Newport Vessels’ motors cost almost half the price of Minn Kotas.

If that’s not savings, I don’t know what is.

Now, this might concern you a bit.

It’s cheap, made in China, and all they have in our country is a warehouse. Is this starting to sound fishy to you?

made in china stamp

Well, that brings us to our last point.

7. Newport Vessels is a Trusted Brand

Yes, they’re cheap.

Yes, they’re made in China.

Yes, all they have is a warehouse.

But when you get a Newport Vessel’s motor, you’ll understand why this brand is continuously growing.

NV makes promises and delivers them. No wonder they have thousands of happy customers all over the country.

Just read their reviews, you’ll find that NV is a beloved brand. So many people are delighted that they took the “risk” and went for something other than Minn Kota.

The only question is…

Will you be the next one?

The Verdict

Minn Kota is straight-up better than Newport Vessels.

I’ve said it in the start, I’ll say it again here.

But with these 7 facts, you should see why thousands of people ditch them for Newport Vessels.

It’s a bang for your buck.

And if you’re worried about quality, you have dozens of reviews to assure you.

Conclusion

So what will it be?

Minn Kota?

Newport Vessels?

Whatever it is, I can guarantee you one thing:

Both of these brands will give you a grand time out on the lake (or sea!).

Still have some questions? Shoot me a comment and I’ll answer you right away!

For most people looking to buy a motor for their inflatable boats, 55lb thrust trolling motors are an ideal pick.

Why?

  • Trolling motors thrust weaker than 55lbs will struggle when the weather turns against us or the boat is overloaded
  • Stronger than 55lb thrust motors are more expensive, require more battery power, and are only a necessity if the joint weight of the boat + load is over lbs / kg or if the boat is longer than 16 feet.

Electric trolling motors with 55lb of thrust are perfect for inflatable boats, kayaks, and fishing boats.

Top 55lb thrust electric trolling motors

Here is my list of the best motors in the 55lb thrust category:

Let’s have a look at them in more detail.

Newport Vessels NV-series – Top pick

My number 1 pick is the 55lb NV series from Newport Vessels.

The brand is known for making high-quality motors, which is backed by their 2-year warranty. If anything goes wrong, their motors are serviceable, they provide great customer service, and parts are readily available on their site.

Newport Vessels Nv 55 Lb Full
Newport Vessels Nv 55 Lb Top

For around $, you get a lot of features, most of which cost extra with competing brands:

  • Built-in 5 point LED battery meter
  • Can be used in freshwater and saltwater (zinc, aluminum, and stainless steel  construction)
  • Adjustable inch fiberglass composite shaft
  • 5 forward speeds and 3 reverse speeds
  • Includes 50 amp manual reset circuit breaker

I have used this motor extensively and can say that it is dependable, quiet, and overall very pleasant to use.

Here is a video on this motor, you can see how fast it can go and how easy it is to use.

Newport Vessels X series – Runner up

The X series, 55 lb thrust trolling motor from Newport Vessels is similar to the NV above in many ways.

Newport Vessels X 55 Lb Full
Newport Vessels X 55 Lb Top

The main differences, which warrant the higher price point, are the following:

  • Adjustable inch fiberglass shaft
  • 30° tilting head

Besides the longer shaft, the main feature the X has over the NV is the tilting head. It can tilt up or down up to 30°. Combined with the extending tiller (handle), this means that the person steering can find the perfect position to operate the vessel.

Minn Kota Endura 55lb – 3rd place

Minn Kota is another popular manufacturer of trolling motors. Don’t let the awkward name fool you. The company was established in , and the name is short for Minnesota Dakota.

The company also offers a 2-year warranty and provides support and parts if needed.

Minn Kota Endura 55 Lb Full
Minn Kota Endura 55 Lb Top

Their Endura line of trolling motors is very popular amongst freshwater fishermen. It is comparable to the Newport Vessels NV in most aspects, but lacks several features that the NV has:

  • no battery meter
  • cannot be used in saltwater without voiding the warranty
  • does not include a circuit breaker

Another difference is that the Endura used a 2 blade propeller, as opposed to Newport Vessels’ 3 blade propeller. This is supposed to save some battery power, but I doubt it is noticeable in real life conditions.

I have a friend who owns and swears by this motor, so this could be a good pick if you are only looking for freshwater use.

Here is a video on this motor as well.

Minn Kota Endura Max 55lb – 4th place

The Minn Kota Endura Max is basically an upgraded version of the normal Endura.

Minn Kota Endura Max 55 Lb Full
Minn Kota Endura Max 55 Lb Top

The extra features are:

  • built-in 4-point LED battery meter (push button operated)
  • Digital Maximizer for longer battery life
  • not restricted to 8 speeds, rather an analog speed handle for dialing in your exact speed

The Endura Max is all about extending your time on the water. The company’s “Digital Maximizer” technology, which promises longer battery life by delivering the precise amount of power you need. They promise up to 5x more battery life, but that is way overshooting it.

I have used this motor, it did get more time on the water, but not 5x. Here is a detailed post about how the digital maximizer works, and what you can expect.

The disadvantages of the Endura over the Newport Vessels NV or X are:

  • limited to freshwater use
  • no circuit breaker included, you have to buy it separately

The extra features of the Max make it somewhat more expensive than the normal Endura.

Minn Kota Riptide 55lb – 5th place

The Riptide is a further upgrade from the Endura Max.

Minn Kota Riptide 55 Lb Full
Minn Kota Riptide 55 Lb Top

It has 2 added features:

  • Saltwater safe
  • Tilting handle

This is a very high quality trolling motor, but it comes at a much higher price point though.

Goplus 55lb – Budget pick

I do not have any personal experience with this motor, but it is a well-known budget brand of trolling motors.

Goplus 55 Lb Full

Its main features are:

  • saltwater safe
  • 5 forward and 3 reverse speeds
  • 10 point LED battery meter

I have mixed feeling about this brand though, because:

  • I cannot find any warranty information on Goplus motors
  • the product received mixed reviews on Amazon

This motor is significantly cheaper than the other ones on this list, just know the risks before you buy it.

What kind of battery does a 55lb trolling motor need?

The amp draw of 55lb trolling motors is around 50A. It is a good idea to use a deep cycle marine battery that has at least 50 Ah of power.

Depending on how much time you are looking to spend on the water with a charge, my recommendations are either:

It is important to know that the Ah Vmax is considerably heavier and bulkier than the 55 Ah Mighty Max.

If you are looking for a motor for an inflatable raft (like the Excursion 5), you should stick with the smaller battery, or perhaps a light Lithium one. But if you have a hard floor boat, you can easily go with the Ah Vmax AGM.

Have a look at my guide on marine batteries for trolling motors as well.

How fast can a 55lb thrust trolling motor go?

You can reach speeds of around 4 MPH with a 55lb trolling motor if conditions are optimal.

There are several factors that your speed will depend on though:

  • Wind
  • Water currents
  • Load
  • Battery charge

The amp draw of 55 lb thrust trolling motors is around 50 amps at full throttle, so going max speed will deplete your battery pretty quickly.

Can you use a freshwater trolling motor in saltwater?

Saltwater safe trolling motors have better seals on the mechanical and electrical components and are thus better protected against the corrosion that saltwater levies on the motor.

You can, of course, operate a freshwater motor in saltwater, but it will probably void the manufacturer warranty.

If you decide on using it in saltwater, make sure you rinse the motor with fresh water as soon as you can.

What shaft length does my boat need?

 Shaft Length

The length of the motor shaft will determine how far the propeller can go down into the water.

  • If the shaft is too short, the propeller will not submerge fully into the water, especially during harsh conditions.
  • If the shaft is too long, you might bump your propeller into things or the seabed in shallow water.

How do you know what shaft length you need?

It’s simple actually. To find the proper shaft length, find (or measure) the height of the top of the transom to the waterline, and add ″. The goal is for the entire propeller to stay about 6 inches below the water surface, even when the boat pitches and rolls in bad weather or waves.

A longer shaft is always better than a shorter one, since you can fine-tune the motor’s vertical position with the adjustment on the mount.

Customer Questions & Answers

  • Question: will it be good for 5 person with beer coolers wooden fishing boat so like pounds with dogs and still be fast i only have

Answer: NO,NO, NO, Lose 4 people, take 1 beer cooler, and 1 dog and maybe ( and you only have what? )
  • Question: I have a 12 foot aluminum boat will this motor push around this boat

Answer: I have a 12' Valco Aluminum boat and it pushes it around pretty good in the 5th forward speed. Prob got up to 5 or 6 mph. I never did it for very long though so not sure how long the battery would last doing that all day. Goes pretty slow until you kick it into the 5th gear and then you feel a nice push. Also have not tried it into any kind of head wind or current.
  • Question: how many amps is this motor in high speed?

Answer: Hi, The 36lb NV Series motor draws 29 Amps at top speed. Hopefully this helps! If you have more questions or need additional help, please visit newportvessels.com or give us a call at () ! Our hours are M-F, ampm Pacific Time. Best, -NV Team
  • Question: I want to know the horsepower of the Newport Vessels 55 Pound Thrust 8 Electric Trolling Motor to see if it is allowed in the lake I want to us it in?

Answer: Herbert, also consider that I use this motor on a 12' kayak. My average current use is 12Amps/hr - that is at a "3" setting on the handle. If I had a heavier boat, I would increase the power used by using the "5" setting (to maintain the equivalent speed). That would use about 20 amps/hr. So you can see that would almost double the power use that I would use, bring the HP rating to double the HP/hr = HP/hr. But the battery life would be cut in half. If you had a double the size battery of Amp/hr battery - which is pretty large, you would end up with HP/6 hours. I believe that would be the maximum case. One answer mentions thrust. I calculate a thrust of newton meters = ft/lbs. Some rounding errors there. That pretty well matches the 55 pound thrust specification. If anyone gives you any problem - tell them that electric motors are not rated in horsepower, but the motor does have a thrust rating of newton-meters. Ask them if they could convert that to a equivalent HP rating? As they stare at you like you have 3 eyeballs, tell them that : "I have already made the conversion and it equals to HP at maximum thrust." Watch the person say : " Uhhhh-yea - that's about right gooduh do you have your life jacket?yea?..great ..uh..gotta gohave a nice day!" Watch person jump into truck - peeling away wondering what in the heck a newton-meter is.
  • Question: can the head be turned around to be mounted on the bow?

Answer: Hi, Our motors are designed as transom mount trolling motors. However, there is a way to turn the head degrees for bow mounting application. • Question: Is it made for salt water?

Answer: Hi, Yes! All of our motors are rated for both Salt and Freshwater. We recommend rinsing your trolling motor with freshwater after use in saltwater. This will help extend the motor's lifespan. If you have more questions or need additional help, please visit newportvessels.com or give us a call at () ! Our hours are M-F, ampm Pacific Time. Best, -NV Team
  • Question: Is 30 inches a good shaft length for a transom on a 14 foot aluminum boat?

Answer: The answer to your question depends on several factors including the height of your transom and the draft of your boat. Measure the draft from the line on the hull and the height of the transom. Most motors work best at 5"" below the water's surface. You can determine where your prop would be reasonably well with the above measurements and decide whether a 30" shaft is sufficient. It probably is. If you intend to take the boat in a large body of water, you'd be better off with a higher-thrust motor. By the way, so far as I can tell (my NV is mounted on a kayak and the lakes are still frozen), this seems to be quite a good product and I had a very good experience with the seller. (I also have a Min-kota). Joseph Ray
  • Question: Can the mounting bracket be adjusted to position it where you want to on the shaft? Hard to tell by the picture.

Answer: Hi, The transom bracket is secured to a mounting position and then the shaft has the ability to be adjusted. There is a height adjustment collar located just above the transom bracket that allows you to position the height of the motor to your application. There is also a directional lock that allows you freely rotate the motor degrees when loose or to lock it in a direction when fully tightened. For additional questions regarding this topic or another, feel free to give us a call at () ! Our hours are Mon-Fri, ampm Pacific Standard Time. Best, -NV Team
  • Question: Has anyone tried this on trolling calm waters with a Boston Whaler Montauk?

I don’t have a lot of experience with trolling motors, but hands down the Newport Vessels 55 Pound Thrust 8 Speed Electric Trolling Motor has been without a doubt one of the best purchases I have made so far.

The Newport Vessels 55Ib thrust electric trolling motor is practically in a league of its own. Designed and constructed with only the highest quality materials. The adjustable inch shaft length helps make this trolling motor very versatile to fit all Newport Vessels inflatable boats as well as all other types of inflatable boats, kayaks, dinghies, tenders, fishing boats, aluminum fishing boats, and most fixed transom smaller boats. Setup, Unboxing, and What is Included?

The Newport Vessels 55Ib thrust electric trolling motor is incredibly lightweight right out of the box. This will be your first impression from it, as so many other reviewers have also said the same thing. You will also receive a 3-blade propeller kit in the box that is incredibly easy to install if you follow the included instructions, as well as a 50 amp circuit breaker which is also found in the propeller box.

Setting everything up out of the box is a snap, and easy to do. Even installing this motor on your boat is incredibly simple to do, and something you can do by yourself without any help.

What you will not receive with the NV 55Ib is a battery. You will need to supply a 12V Deep Cycle or Marine Battery and charger. It is recommended that the battery has at least 50 Amp Hour Rating.

newport vessels trolling motor

Performance and Battery “Usage”

trolling motor on boatFor a 55Ib outboard motor, the NV 55Ib is one of the quietest trolling motors I’ve ever used. My brother-in-law claims to have owned over a dozen different trolling motors over the years, and he said my NV 55Ib is one of the best he’s ever used as well. Another neat feature is the built-in LED meter that will give you a precise battery life reading. The NV 55Ib Trolling Motor is constructed with Zinc, aluminum, and stainless steel components allowing for dependable performance in saltwater making it more versatile than any other trolling motor in its class.

During use, the 50 amp circuit breaker will automatically shut off your motor, if the motor/propeller becomes tangled or stuck due to weeds, small stones, fishing line or so forth.

The NV 55Ib does not come with a battery, so you will have to supply a 12V battery yourself. The recommended type of battery is a deep cycle battery or marine battery since they will last much longer and they are designed for this application.

Depending on the size of boat you are using, and how fast your speed is, really plays a big part in how long your battery will last. For example, I’m using a deep cycle battery on my NV 55Ib and generally stick between the second and third speed setting, and I can get a good hours out of mine.

First Time Running

For the first time running the NV 55Ib you should follow these steps:

  1. Set the NV 55Ib onto the back of your vessel sitting in the Stowaway position.
  2. Begin to loosely tighten the transom Mounting Screws until they start to grip the Transom Mount.
  3. Press the Tilt Lever and slowly introduce the motor to the water.
  4. To adjust the height of the motor, use the Depth Adjuster Collar (The recommended running depth is between mm to mm (6in to 12in) below the waterline).
  5. Once you are satisfied that the motor is at a safe depth and it is not in danger of hitting underwater objects, or close to the bottom of the lake, river or other waterways, you can now proceed to tighten the Transom Mounting Screws.
  6. Make sure the twist grip is in a neutral position. Now it should be safe to connect the battery to the motor. Ensure the nuts are tight on the terminals to prevent a poor connection.
  7. Use the twist grip on the tiller arm to select your desired speed and direction.

* Do not go from top speed forward, to top speed reverse without first allowing the propellers to stop turning first to avoid motor damage.

You can find the Newport Vessels pound Thrust 8 Speed Electric Trolling Motor on Amazon for $ brand new. When I purchased mine from Amazon, it didn’t come with an additional option to add on a protection plan, but it does come with a two-year warranty from the manufacturer.

Here are some other retailers who sell the Newport Vessels 55Ib thrust electric motor as of the time of this writing:

  • Walmart for $ with a two-year protection plan for $ and a three-year protection plan for $
  • NewportVessels.com for $ with no protection plans offered.
  • Kmart for $ with no protection plans offered.
  • eBay.com from $ to $ brand new, with no protection plans offered.

Maintenance

As with all trolling motors, there are specific maintenance requirements that you should perform after each use to help keep the motor running properly. Below is a list of the manufacturers recommended maintenance tasks before and after each use:

  • Look behind the propeller and around the shaft for fishing line, weeds, or other types of debris that could get wrapped behind the propeller.
  • Using only a non-aerosol lubricant, make sure to lubricate all of the pivot points. Using an aerosol lubricant could cause damage to various parts of the electric motor.
  • Visually check and ensure that the main battery cables are in good condition, and not showing any cuts, tears, or any other type of damage.
  • After every use thoroughly rinse the electric outboard motor with fresh water, especially after salt water exposure. Only rinse the bottom half that’s been in the water, and avoid rinsing the top cover area to avoid damaging the circuitry inside.
  • Inspect and ensure that all nuts, bolts, and screws are tightly in place.
  • After each use recharge the battery following the battery manufacturers recommendations for battery maintenance.
  • Never connect the wires to the wrong battery terminal. During any maintenance, make sure to disconnect the battery before beginning.

Compared to Other Brands

As far as thrust goes, the Newport Vessels 55 Pound Thrust Trolling Motor is closely compared to other similar competitors models such as the Minn Kota Traxxis 55Ib and the MotorGuide R3 55Ib. On top of offering some great additional features, another thing that sets the NV 55Ib trolling motor ahead of the competition is that it is saltwater resistant, something that the Traxxis 55Ib and R3 55Ib are not.

The Newport Vessels 55Ib was designed and constructed using Zinc, aluminum, and stainless steel components which allows this motor to perform flawlessly in saltwater. The 5-point LED meter built into the motor head will give you a precise measurement of the remaining battery life. The Minn Kota Traxxis 55Ib has a push to test button that will provide you with reading, while the MotorGuide R3 55Ib doesn’t come with any battery life indicator.

As of the time of this writing, the Newport Vessels 55Ib thrust trolling motor offers all of the key features you would want in a trolling motor, at the lowest price of just $

Newport Vessel 55lb Trolling motor on Intex Mariner 4

I obediently begin to lick, hearing Misha's moans of approval. But Misha was overexcited, so almost immediately, I heard his rapid breathing, he put his hand on his wife's head and pressed her all the way. When he finished, he let go of her head, after which my wife took me by the hair, raised her head, I immediately opened.

I licked and could not enjoy. I ran my tongue over her labia, sucked on the clitoris, and she moaned louder and louder. I moved my tongue to the hole in the anus and stuck my finger into the vagina. She oyknula, her vagina throbbed and Vika began to cum, filling my finger and mouth with juices. I did not stop fondling her.
