TOP TANK SETS — ELDER SCROLLS ONLINE

And for solo-tanking, Ebon/Alkosh and Ebon/Torug are both good choices, depending on the content. In short, any serious endgame PvE tank should have Torug somewhere in their bag.

Elder Scrolls Online: Best Armor Sets For Dragonknights

By Erik Alexander Petrovich

ShareTweetEmail

As the master tanks in Elder Scrolls Online, Dragonknights need the right armor set to do their jobs effectively.

Dragonknights in The Elder Scrolls Online are the hard-hitting, fire-wielding, rock-shielding face of the Tanking role. Typically, Dragonknights stay away from Support roles in favor of DPS and of course Tanking. However, some of their skills can give good buffs and decent healing to a party. Though they are one of the more limited classes, they are mighty nonetheless.

RELATED: Elder Scrolls Online: Best Weapons For Dragonknights, Ranked

Dragonknights tend to favor Stamina over Magicka as a resource, but it's not a set-in-stone rule. Many players choose a blend of both resources. Heavy Armor sets tend to be the most useful for Dragonknights in The Elder Scrolls Online, mostly for their high defensive bonuses and the incredibly useful front-line abilities they grant.

5 The False God's Devotion Set - Light Armor, Jewelry, Weapons

The False God's Devotion set is a Magicka-enhancing armor set. Its full effect is extremely useful for taking on group content as a DPS Dragonknight, as seen below:

  • At two and four items equipped, the player gains 657 Spell Critical.
  • With three items, the player is given the Minor Slayer buff. This increases damage in groupdelves, dungeons, and trials by 5%.
  • At five items equipped,Magicka ability costs are reduced by 8%. The player is also refunded Magicka and given the movement speed-enhancing buff Major Expedition upon killing an enemy.

Dragonknights have a few decent ways to get around the battlefield, namely the Dragon Leap ability; however, they are usually a bit slower than other classes. The False God's Devotion buff can make handling a big group of enemies a little bit easier, as it procs when the creature dies, not if the Dragonknight makes the last hit. However, as a Light Armor set, it can make Tanking a bit rough if the party healer can't keep up.

Look for the pieces to the False God's Devotion set in the Sunspire Trial, which requires the Elsweyr DLC for non-ESO+ members.

4 The Mother's Sorrow Set - Light Armor, Jewelry, Weapons

Another set for Dragonknights focusing on Magicka, the Mother's Sorrow armor set grants buffs to Max Magicka as well as Spell Critical chance.

  • With two pieces of gear equipped, the player gains 1096 Maximum Magicka.
  • Equipping three and four pieces grants 657 Spell Critical.
  • At five items equipped, the player is given a further 1528 Spell Critical.

RELATED: Elder Scrolls Online: Best Skills For The Dragonknight Class

Being Light Armor, it's not the most optimal armor set for tanking or even for damage-oriented Dragonknights. A Dragonknight playing both a damage and support role, though, can make use of the Light Armor skill tree bonuses. Pair it with a Staff to make for a surprisingly effective hybrid of damage and healing.

To find the pieces to the Mother's Sorrow set, complete content in Deshaan in the overworld, delves, dungeons, and other content.

3 The Zaan's Set - Light, Medium, Heavy Armor

The Zaan armor set is a monster set, meaning it only has two pieces in the form of a Helm and a Shoulder piece.

  • With just one item equipped, it will grant 657 Spell Critical to the player.
  • Equipping both pieces grants a unique ability. When the Dragonknight deals damage with a regular light or heavy attack, there's a 1/3 chance to spawn a Beam of Fire that connects the player to their target. As long as the Dragonknight stays within 8 meters, the target receives a base 305 Flame damage every second for six seconds. If that's not enough, it doubles in power every second.

The Zaan armor set is a must-have for DPS Dragonknights. That constant stream of damage to a nearby target is incredibly useful for this low-mobility front-line class. Plus, it scales off of either Weapon or Spell Damage. This way, even Dragonknights who aren't specced into Spell Critical can still make full use of this ability.

The Zaan armor set Helm drops from Scalecaller Peak's final boss on Veteran mode. Meanwhile, find the Shoulder piece in Urgalarg Chief-Bane's Chest. Both are guaranteed drops.

2 The Ebon Armory Set - Heavy Armor, Jewelry, Weapons

The Ebon Armory armor set is a great go-to for Dragonknight Tanks for its Health and Healing bonuses, as well as a party-wide buff it grants.

  • With two and three items equipped, the player is granted 1206 Max Health apiece.
  • At four items, the set increases Healing Received by 4%.
  • With all five pieces equipped, the player gains another 1000 Max Health, and gives all nearby allies 1000 Max Health as well.

RELATED: Elder Scrolls Online: Best Weapons For Necromancers, Ranked

The Ebon Armory set is not the most complex armor set in The Elder Scrolls Online, nor is it the most useless. For Tanks, its full effect is incredibly powerful; however, even just having two or three pieces equipped (in Jewelry or Weapons) gives such a good bonus to Max Health that it's hard to pass up.

Players can find the Ebon Armory set in the Crypt of Hearts dungeons, in both Part One and Part Two, as drops from monsters and bosses.

1 The Iceheart Set - Light Armor, Medium Armor, Heavy Armor

The Iceheart armor set is, like the Zaan set, a monster set with only two pieces – a Helmet and a Shoulder Piece. Players can acquire these monster sets  through Undaunted progression. They are available in any of the three armor types, allowing for full customization in terms of build.

  • Equipping one piece of the Iceheart set grants 657 Spell Critical.
  • With two pieces equipped, it gives Critical Hits 20% chance to give the player a powerful, damage-pulsing shield. This shield scales off of either Weapon or Spell damage, whichever is higher.

The shield can take 5000 damage before breaking, all the while damaging enemies in a five-meter radius every second. This is a fantastic armor set for Dragonknight Tanks thanks to its self-sustain capabilities, but it's also a great set for any Dragonknight player who wants to up their survivability.

Players can find the Iceheart monster set's Helm in Direfrost Keep in Eastmarch on Veteran mode. Meanwhile, find the the Shoulder piece in Gilirion the Redbeard's chest.

The Best ESO Sets for DPS, Tanks, and Healers

Complete list of the best Sets in Elder Scrolls Online for each character class

Introduction

Equipping your character with proper items is an essential part of the Elder Scrolls Online gameplay. The game offers a vast quantity of different Items - One and Two-Handed Weapons, Light, Medium, and Heavy Armors, Jewelry, and so on. A lot of those Items are a part of special Sets that grant various powerful bonuses based on the number of corresponding Set's Items equipped. These Set Bonuses are too good to pass up, and it is always better to wear a Set, than normal items, even if the Set is of lower quality - Set Bonuses more than make up for potential power loses.

This guide will go over the most popular and the best Sets for most used build types (Stamina DPS, Magicka DPS, Tank, and Healer). Power-level of featured Sets will differ, as we want to include not only "the best Trial Sets", but rather focus on easier-to-get, but still very powerful Crafted, Dungeon, and Monster Sets.

Set Types

Sets come in many different types in ESO. Each type is obtained in different ways and its power level often corresponds with the obtaining difficulty. However, many of the easy-to-obtain Overland BoE Sets provide powerful bonuses that make them good enough for all but the hardest end-game content. Every player can find a Set that can be obtained through his favorite in-game activities, which means that gearing up in ESO is very enjoyable, and can be considered as one of the most fun aspects of the game. The main Set Types Are:

  • Trial Sets - These can be obtained from Trials (as their name suggests) and often provide the highest Power Level of all available Sets, but are Very difficult to get because they are locked out behind the hardest Content in the game.
  • PvP Sets - Rewards for participating in PvP battles. These can be obtained from Cyrodill or the Imperial City.
  • Monster Masks and Shoulders - Available from Group Dungeons in Veteran Mode and from Undaunted Pledges. Masks drop from final bosses, and Shoulders are obtained through the Undaunted Chests.
  • Arena Sets - Rewards from the Maelstrom Arena and the Dragonstar Arena.
  • Crafted Sets - These can be created by Players at special Crafting Stations (different stations match different Sets, so you have to find an appropriate Station to craft a specific Set). Crafting requires a certain number of Traits researched on the particular item slot. Crafted sets can be offered for sale by other players as they are "Bound on Equip"
  • Overland Sets - These can be obtained from mobs (World Bosses have a 100% chance to drop either a Weapon, Chest, Legs or a Head slot Set item, other parts commonly drop from Public Dungeon Bosses) in a specific Zone. Most zones have three Overland Sets specific to them (one Heavy, one Medium, and One Light Set). Overland Sets are bind-on-equip, so they can be farmed in large quantities and then sold to other Players.
  • Group Dungeon Sets - These are bind-on-pickup Item Sets that can be acquired from mobs inside Group Dungeons. Each Group Dungeon Boss drops a Set Item (Last Boss - Jewelry and Weapons, Normal Boss - Legs, Chest, Shoulder, and Head, Mini Boss - Boots, Waist, and Gloves). Although being bind-on-pickup, these Set Items can be traded to your Dungeon group members while you remain a part of the group.

Most Popular Stamina DPS Sets

Hunding's Rage

Hunding's Rage is a Craftable set that is a part of the base game. It is available in the form of Light, Medium, and Heavy Armor, Weapons, and Jewelry. High Weapon Damage bonus, great bonuses to Stamina and Weapon Critical and the rather low price make this set one of the most commonly used Stamina PvP sets. If you want a good start as a Stamina DPS, this set is the way to go. It will serve you well as the pre-BiS. Hunding's Rage's power level is similar to that of the Briarheart Set.

Set Bonuses

  1. (2 items) Adds 833 Weapon Critical
  2. (3 items) Adds 1096 Maximum Stamina
  3. (4 items) Adds 833 Weapon Critical
  4. (5 items) Adds 299 Weapon Damage

How to Get

This Set can be purchased from other Players or Crafted at the Stations located in:

  • The Rift
  • Reaper's March
  • Bangkorai
Exemplary Hunding's Rage Build: Odealo's Stamina Sorcerer PvE DPS

Stormfist

One of the most commonly used Stamina DPS Sets, and for a good reason. It is a part of the One Tamriel and comes as a Light, Medium, and Heavy Armor, and is available in the form of Helmet and Shoulders. Its 1-item bonus gives much-needed Stamina Recovery that helps with sustain by a lot, and the  2-item bonus provides a very high boost to Single-Target and AoE Damage (proc is very easy to get, as it activates when you deal Damage, it gets wasted sometimes, however, because mobs tend to move around, and the proc is ground-based which results in enemies sometimes dodging the thunderfist).

Set Bonuses

  1. (1 item) Adds 129 Stamina Recovery
  2. (2 items) When you deal damage, you have a 10% chance to create a thunderfist to crush the enemy, dealing 1650 Shock Damage every 1 second for 3 seconds to all enemies within 4 meters and a final 8000 Physical Damage when the fist closes; it has an 8-second internal cooldown.

How to Get

Stormfist Set can be acquired from the Veteran Tempest Island 4-man Dungeon located in the Malabal Tor.

  • Helmet drops from the final Boss in Veteran mode.
  • Shoulders can be sometimes found in the Gilirion the Redbeard's Chest by using the Pledge Key on it.
Exemplary Stormfist Build: Odealo's Stamina Dragonblade PvE DPS

Briarheart

A part of the Orsinium DLC, the Briarheart Set provides a very high boost to Weapon Damage, Maximum Stamina, and has a 5-item proc that increases your Weapon Damage even more, and heals you by a little to boot. It is available as Medium Armor, Weapons, and Jewelry. As a World-Drop, the Brioarheart set is rather easy to acquire, which makes it an excellent choice for fresh Stamina DPS Players.

Set Bonuses

  1. (2 items) Adds 833 Weapon Critical
  2. (3 items) Adds 1096 Maximum Stamina
  3. (4 items) Adds 833 Weapon Critical
  4. (5 items) Dealing Critical Damage has a 10% chance to increase your Weapon Damage by 449 for 10s. Your Critical Strikes heal you for 609 HP during the uptime; it has a 10-second internal cooldown.

How to Get

Briarheart is an Overland Set that can be acquired from Wrothgar. The Set is bound on equip, which means that it can be bought from other Players.

  • Wrothgar's Overland Bosses Drop Weapons, Legs, Chests, and Shoulders.
  • Delve Bosses can drop Boots or Waist.
  • Public Dungeon Bosses may drop Weapons, Gloves, and Shoulders.
  • All monsters encountered in Wrothgar have a small chance to drop a set piece.
  • Set pieces can also be found in Zone's Treasure Chests.
Exemplary Briarheart Build: Odealo's Stamina Templar PvE DPS

Velidreth

The Vildreth Set is one of the most commonly used Stamina DPS Monster Sets and is a part of the Shadows of the Hist DLC. High Weapon Damage bonus that comes as a 1-item bonus provides a very good DPS boost and the unique 2-item bonus boosts the DPS even higher (but each of the 3 spores hits different Target, which means that you will not get the triple effect when fighting a single enemy). The proc is very easy to get, as it activates on Damage, and will commonly proc on cooldown.

Set Bonuses

  1. (1 item) Adds 129 Weapon Damage
  2. (2 items) When you deal damage, you have a 20% chance to spawn 3 disease spores in front of you after 1 second that deal 10320 Disease Damage to the first enemy they hit. This effect has a 9-second internal cooldown.

How to Get

Vildreth is a Monster Set that can be acquired from the Veteran Cradle of Shadows Dungeon.

  • Helmet drops from the final Boss in Veteran mode.
  • Shoulders can be sometimes found in the Urgalarg Chief-bane's Chest by using the Pledge Key on it.
Exemplary Velidreth Build: Odealo's Stamina Nigthtblade PvE DPS

Most Popular Magicka DPS Sets

Mother's Sorrow

Very popular (and very easy to get, especially for such a powerful set) Magicka DPS Set that gives a lot of additional Spell Critical which works great in both Single-Target and AoE encounters. This high bonus makes this set the backbone of almost every competitive Magicka DPS build. It comes as a Light Armor, Weapons, and Jewelry, and is a part of the One Tamriel.

Set Bonuses

  1. (2 items) Adds 1096 Max Magicka
  2. (3 items) Adds 833 Spell Critical
  3. (4 items) Adds 833 Spell Critical
  4. (5 items) Adds 1924 Spell Critical

How to Get

Mother's Sorrow is an Overland Set that can be found in Deshaan. The Set is bound on equip, which means that it can be bought from other Players.

  • Deshaan's Overland Bosses Drop Weapons, Legs, Chests, and Shoulders.
  • Delve Bosses can drop Boots or Waist.
  • Public Dungeon Bosses may drop Weapons, Gloves, and Shoulders.
  • All monsters encountered in Deshaan have a small chance to drop a set piece.
  • Set pieces can also be found in Zone's Treasure Chests.

Note: This is one of the best Sets to farm for profit, as the demand for it is simply gigantic. If you want to know more about farming it and discover other profitable ESO activities, feel free to check our ESO Gold Making Guide.

Exemplary Mother's Sorrow Build: Odealo's Magicka Sorcerer PvE DPS

Mantle of Siroria

This set comes in two different versions normal and the perfect. The 5-item set bonus is the same for both versions, but the Perfect Mantle of Siroria provides higher Magicka bonus. Mantle of Siroria is a Trial set that comes in a form of Light Armor, Weapons, and Jewelry and is a part of the Summerset Chapter. The power level of this set is among the highest in the whole game. The Set, with fully charged 5-item bonus combined with other set bonuses, provides 600 Spell Damage, which is an astronomical number (before you get too excited, please remember that keeping all stacks up all the time is rather difficult, so your bonus will be lower most of the time. This means that playing with this set raises the skill-cap of your character by a lot, and mastering the ability to perfectly manage stacks is essential for getting the most out of this set).

Set Bonuses

  1. (2 items) Adds 129 Spell Damage

Silks of the Sun

This Light Armor, Weapon, and Jewelry Set is a part of the One Tamriel. It provides high bonuses to Health, Magicka, and Spell Damage. Silks of the Sun is used by Fire Damage-based builds, such as Magicka Dragonknight, thanks to its 5-item set bonus which provides 400 Spell Damage to Flame Damage abilities. This gives a total of 529 additional Spell Damage to Fire-based spells, a number that rivals the great Mantle of Siroria. However, because of the limitation that comes with the 5-item bonus, this set has very limited uses outside the Magicka Dragonknight DPS builds (but is a top choice in them, and so it is featured here).

Set Bonuses

  1. (2 items) Adds 1206 Max Health
  2. (3 items) Adds 1096 Max Magicka
  3. (4 items) Adds 129 Spell Damage
  4. (5 items) Adds 400 Spell Damage to your Flame Damage abilities

How to Get

Silks of the Sun is an Overland Set that can be found in the Stonefalls. The Set is bound on equip, which means that it can be bought from other Players.

  • Stonefalls's Overland Bosses Drop Weapons, Legs, Chests, and Shoulders.
  • Delve Bosses can drop Boots or Waist.
  • Public Dungeon Bosses may drop Weapons, Gloves, and Shoulders.
  • All monsters encountered in Stonefalls have a small chance to drop a set piece.
  • Set pieces can also be found in Zone's Treasure Chests.

Master Architect

Master Architect is a Light Armor, Weapons, and Jewelry Trial Set, that is a part of the Morrowind DLC. Its 2-item bonus gives you Minor Slayer, which provides 5% Damage in all Trials and Dungeons. The 5-item bonus is what makes this set stand out, as it provides Major Slayer buffs to the set user and 2 other allies (this effect procs after you use an Ultimate). Thanks to this buff, every Trial group wants to have at least 2 Magicka DPSers who use the Master Architect Set (utilizing the buff requires proper positioning, because it goes off on two closest allies, even if they already have the effect active on them). We recommend this set for Classes with cheap Ultimates, for maximizing proc's uptime (for example Templar+Crescent Sweep or Nightblade+Soul Harvest).

Set Bonuses

  1. (2 items) Adds 1096 Maximum Magicka
  2. (3 items) Gain Minor Slayer at all times, increasing your damage done to Dungeon and Trial Monsters by 5%
  3. (4 items) Adds 129 Spell Damage (5 items) When you use an Ultimate ability, you and the closest 2 allies within 28 meters of you gain Major Slayer for 10 seconds, increasing your damage done to Dungeon and Trial Monsters by 15%
  4. (5 items) When you use an Ultimate, you and two closest allies within 28m gain Major Slayer, increasing Damage Done to Dungeon and Trial Monsters by 15% for 10 seconds.

How to Get

You will need the Morrowind DLC to acquire this Set. The Set is bound on pickup, which means that it can't be bought and can only be traded to Players from the same Trial group.

  • It is a reward from the Halls of Fabrication Trial.
  • Normal mode Bosses and trash mobs drop blue-quality variant.
  • Veteran mode Bosses and trash mobs drop purple-quality variant.
  • The last boss in the Veteran mode drops gold-quality set Jewelry.

False God's Devotion

False God's Devotion is one of the best Magicka sets in Elder Scrolls Online. In terms of raw DPS, in most cases it may be second to Mantle of Siroria, however, it helps greatly with your Resource Management, which will do better in various encounters.

Set Bonuses

  1. (2 items) Adds 833 Spell Critical
  2. (3 items) Gain Minor Slayer at all times, increasing your damage done to Dungeon, Trial, and Arena Monsters by 5%.
  3. (4 items) Adds 833 Spell Critical
  4. (5 items) Adds 129 Spell Damage, Reduces the cost of your Magicka Abilities by 8%. When you kill an enemy, you restore 2150 Magicka and gain Major Expedition for 8 seconds, increasing your Movement Speed by 30%.

How to Get

False God's Devotion requires the Elsweyr chapter unlocked. It can be found in the Sunspire Trial. Since it's bound on pick up, you can't buy it from other players, but you will have to face the challenge yourself

Most Popular Tank Sets

Ebon Armory

This set comes as Heavy Armor, Weapons, and Jewelry and is a part of the One Tamriel. It has substantial Maximum Health bonuses and increases Healing Taken, moreover, it raises total Health of up to 11 group members (5-item bonus; this improves the survivability of the whole trial group). If you see a Tank with 3 red orbs floating around him (a feature of the set), stay within 28m of him, and you will receive the Health bonus (must be in Tank's group, of course). The set is one of the most popular for PvE Tanking, mainly because of the above-mentioned Health boosts.

Set Bonuses

  1. (2 items) Adds 1206 Maximum Health
  2. (3 items) Adds 1206 Maximum Health
  3. (4 items) Adds 4% Healing Taken

Roar of Alkosh

This is a Stamina-based Medium Armor, Jewelry, and Weapons Set. It is a part of the Thieves Guild DLC. Yes, it is Medium and yes, it is used by Tanks. The 5-item bonus that allows the wearer to send a Shockwave that damages enemies in front of him and lowers their resistance. This weave offers a unique penetration debuff which stacks with other penetration debuffs, which enables Trial groups to easily achieve penetration caps. The main reason for Tanks preferring this set is their tendency to stand in front of the Bosses, which simplifies using the synergy by a lot, and allows them to maximize debuff uptime. Also, activating synergies is an important part of Tank's resource management.

Set Bonuses

  1. (2 items) Adds 833 Weapon Critical
  2. (3 items) Gain Minor Slayer at all times, increasing your damage done to Dungeon and Trial Monsters by 5%.
  3. (4 items) Adds 129 Weapon Damage
  4. (5 items) When you activate a synergy, you send a shockwave from your position that deals 1720 Physical Damage and an additional 12040 Physical Damage over 10 seconds. Reduces the Physical and Spell Resistance of any enemy hit by 3010 for 10 seconds.

How to Get

The Set is bound on pickup, which means that it can't be bought and can only be traded to Players from the same Trial group.

  • Available from Weekly Trial Rewards.
  • Can be acquired from the Maw of Lorkhaj Trial.

Most Popular Healer Sets

Vestment of Olorime

This is a Light Armor, Weapons, and Jewelry set that comes in two variants, Vestment of Olorime and the Perfect Vestment of Olorime. The Perfect version provides slightly better stats, but the 5-item Set bonus is exactly the same for both versions. Vestment of Olorime is currently one of the best Healing sets in the game. It allows you to have a 100% uptime on Major Courage because the buff stays active for 30 seconds, and the 5-item bonus effect, that creates Courage-applying zone, can be activated every 10 seconds. The set is a part of the Summerset Chapter.

Set Bonuses

  1. (2 items) Adds 129 Magicka Recovery
  2. (3 items) Gain Minor Aegis at all times, reducing your damage taken from Dungeon and Trial Monsters by 5%
  3. (4 items) Adds 129 Magicka Recovery
  4. (5 items) Adds 1096 Maximum Magicka & Ground-based effect abilities cast apply a circle of might on the ground for 10 seconds. Standing inside the circle grants you and your allies Major Courage, which increases your Weapon Damage and Spell Damage by 258 for 30 seconds. This effect has a 10-second internal Cooldown.

How to Get

The Set is bound on pickup, which means that it can't be bought and can only be traded to Players from the same Trial group.

  • Summerset Chapter is required for this set.
  • It can be acquired from the Cloudrest trial.

Healing Mage

A Light Armor, Weapons, and Jewelry Set that is a part of the One Tamriel. It provides good Stamina Recovery bonus, increases Healing Done, and its 5-item bonus gives the Healer an ability to reduce the Weapon Damage of all close by enemies, which comes in handy during Dungeons and Trials. This bonus provides a lot of utility (by greatly increasing the whole group's survivability) and is one of the main reasons for choosing this Set.

Set Bonuses

  1. (2 items) Adds 129 Magicka Recovery
  2. (3 items) Adds 1096 Maximum Magicka
  3. (4 items) Adds 2% Healing Done
  4. (5 items) When you use an area of effect heal ability, you reduce the Weapon Damage of all enemies within 10 meters of you by 430 for 3 seconds

Welcome to the Dragonhide PvE Dragonknight tank build for The Elder Scrolls Online! This build is great for all kinds of content: vet dungeons, off-tank or main tank for normal trials, and main or off-tank for veteran trials. DKs are the most beginner friendly tank of ESO as well as being consistently top-tier through all levels of content patch after patch. They give great (and unique!) buffs/debuffs for all manners of groups, are able to turn their resources from empty to full with a single ultimate, can go from almost no health to full with a single heal, and have a defensive ultimate that makes you invincible for the duration. What more could you ask for?

Gear

Gear Explanation

  • Magma Incarnate
    • Gives the same buff as Yolnahkriin at a good enough uptime that allows us to free up that 5 slot set.
  • Saxhleel
    • Allows for a longer burst phase from warhorns as well as still giving offensive buffs when you use a defensive ultimate.
  • Powerful Assault
    • A very powerful buff set that’s easy to use and gives you great stats as well.
  • Master’s SnB
    • Powerful Assault can be one barred if you’re comfortable keeping it up that way, so this is basically just free healing.

Gear Explanation

  • Crimson Oath’s Rive
    • With the changes to Alkosh, this will generally be better on a typical tank build if your group needs the penetration.
  • Claw of Yolnakhriin
    • Only source with 100% uptime of Minor Courage (as well as the only source that’s able to proc on a full trial group at once), really easy to proc as a tank, and a really nice spread of stats. Perfected would obviously be best, but non-perfected is just fine.
  • Engine Guardian
    • A little unreliable in specific scenarios but gives great sustain in the long run.

Alternative Gear (Regular Sets)

  • Ebon – Great set for supporting your allies, but may not be necessary with how high health is this patch.
  • Worm’s Raiment – Great if you have magicka DPS and/or healers that need help with sustain.
  • Morag Tong – Great support set if you have lots of stamina DPS.

Alternative Gear (Monster Sets)

  • Bloodspawn – Good for ultimate generation and for keeping resistances up.
  • Symphony of Blades – Great set to help allies’ sustain if you swap in a skill that can heal others. Best used on a healer now that Blood Altar no longer procs it, but you can still use it as long as you can actively keep up other skills, such as Energy Orb.
  • Stonekeeper – Amazing self-sustain. Really good in situations where you need to block a lot.
  • Lady Thorn – Mainly used as a self-synergy for Alkosh. The Major Maim *can* be nice if you time it correctly, but the uptime on the debuff is very short and the cooldown for being affected by it is very long.
  • Tremorscale – Necessary for stamina-heavy groups due to the powerful penetration debuff it gives.
  • Vykosa – Good set to use if you need to temporarily reduce the incoming damage of a boss, such as the breath in vSS or Olms jumping/sending out storms in vAS.
  • Encratis’s Behemoth – Great set for magicka groups and easy to proc. Just throw on a flame glyph, flame skill, or inferno staff.

NOTE ON JEWELRY TRAITS: These are what work for me. You can play just fine with the default traits or with a different setup.

Beginner Gear

  • Armor: Torug’s Pact
  • Jewelry & Weapons (SnB/ice staff) : Akaviri Dragonguard
  • Monster set: Bloodspawn
  • Traits
    • Armor: All Sturdy
    • Jewelry: Healthy
    • Weapons: Decisive front, infused back
  • Enchants
    • Armor: Health big, stamina small
    • Jewelry: 1 shield-play, 2 mag recovery
    • Weapons: Absorb Stam front, Crusher back

Note about Gear Weight & Traits

With the armor changes this patch and the CP changes, 5-1-1 and infused on the big pieces lost some value. Full heavy and sturdy will give you the best sustain and survivability, but 5-1-1 and infused on big pieces is still fine as well.

Attributes

What your attribute distribution is going to look like is based on the race you choose. You should have at least 30k health, but no more than 45k health unless you’re in a fight that needs high health. After that, dump the rest into stamina and magicka (just make sure to have more stamina than magicka). I personally try for around 38-40k health depending on the setup and situation.

Skills

Main Bar – 1h/Shield

  • Pierce Armor
  • Heroic Slash
  • Igneous Shield
  • Stone Giant
  • Green Dragon Blood
  • Ultimate: Magma Shell

Back Bar – Ice Staff

  • Elemental Blockade
  • Inner Fire
  • Unrelenting Grip/FLEX
  • Balance
  • Choking Talons/FLEX
  • Ultimate: Aggressive Horn

Skill Explanations

  • Pierce Armor
    • Our main taunt. With the nerf to Minor Protection and the buff to this skill and the debuffs it provides (just under 9k penetration!!), this is now a must have and way better than Ransack.
  • Heroic Slash
    • Provides Minor Maim and Minor Heroism, making this a very important skill. You can flex this out if you know Minor Maim is going to be covered, but I like to keep it on for the Minor Heroism anyways.
  • Igneous Shield
    • A shield for yourself and nearby allies. And gives them Minor Brutality through the Mountain’s Blessing passive, which is the only good way to get the buff. And gives you back stamina through the Helping Hands passive. And gives you Major Mending. So this is a pretty nice skill. It’s expensive though, so be careful not to overuse it. The other morph is also fine if you prefer the longer Major Mending duration.
  • Stone Giant
    • While tricky to use and can be hard on your stamina, the Stagger debuff this skill provides can be very useful. It benefits classes/specs with lots of damage ticks more (like magicka DPS using Mystic Orb or necromancers with Siphon), but will be at least a 2-3k DPS increase for everyone with a good uptime with the potential to be a little higher. Best when used in trials but can also be nice in 4-man content if you can sustain it.
  • Green Dragon Blood
    • A huge burst heal. It’s expensive though, so don’t spam it. And it recovers based on missing health, so I recommend not using it unless you are under 50% health.
  • Magma Shell
    • Makes you basically invincible for the duration and gives your allies a shield for their entire health. An amazing defensive ultimate if you need it.
  • Elemental Blockade
    • Makes keeping up crusher easy since it will proc even on our front bar. When using a lightning staff, it has a chance to apply off-balance to enemies, which is a huge damage boost to stamina DPS and some magicka DPS.
  • Inner Fire
    • Range taunt if you need it.
  • Unrelenting Grip/FLEX
    • Pulls small adds to you and gives you Major Expedition (even if you use it on something you can’t pull). Also refunds the cost if it fails, making this a very good and efficient skill. Can be flexed out if you don’t need it.
  • Balance
    • Our source of Major Resolve and main source of magicka sustain. Your other main option for Major Resolve is Hardened Armor, which is a very lackluster skill. If you feel your magicka sustain is fine without it then feel free to swap it out, but I highly recommend you use it otherwise.
  • Choking Talons/FLEX
    • Locks down small adds and applies Minor Maim, reducing their damage by 15%. Very nice in add pulls. Can be flexed out if you don’t need it.
  • Aggressive Warhorn
    • Our main ultimate, and for good reason. It increases ally’s magicka and stamina pools by 10% for 30 seconds and gives Major Force for 9 seconds, which is a big DPS boost.

Alternative Skills

  • Engulfing Flames
    • Applies a unique debuff that increases the fire damage an affected enemy takes by up to 10%. Great for increasing group DPS if there are magicka DPS present and no other magicka Dragonknights.
  • Protective Plate
    • Reduces projectile damage and gain immunity to snares for a short time. Useful in fights with snares or hard hitting projectiles.
  • Deep Breath
    • AoE interrupt. Useful if there are many things you need to interrupt at once. Also heals you for a bit, which is nice.
  • Cinder Storm
    • Reduces enemy movement speed by 70% and heals you and allies if you’re in it. The healing isn’t a whole lot, but it’s still nice. And it can proc Olorime, so it’s a nice skill to use when you are using that set.
  • Invasion
    • Good if you need a gap closer
  • Shield Discipline
    • Good for tanking the axes in vAA if you need a guaranteed point where you can heavy attack. I wouldn’t recommend it anywhere else though
  • Elemental Drain
    • Healers should be running this but it’s nice to have just in case
  • Ring of Preservation
    • AoE Minor Protection, AoE Minor Endurance, and a small bit of healing. Good in places where your team stacks and needs the extra protection.
  • Overflowing Altar
    • Heals all allies attacking enemies in the radius and provides a great synergy if someone drops to low health. No longer procs sets such as Symphony though, so be weary if that’s what you want to use it for.
  • Shadow Silk
    • Great synergy if DPS are far enough away from the placement
  • Bone Surge
    • Mainly used for the synergy
  • Energy Orb
    • Would mainly be used for the option to heal others as the synergy should already be present from healers and magicka DPS
  • Efficient Purge
  • Mystic Guard
    • Can be good in some strats where one person is taking a lot of damage.
  • Reviving Barrier
    • Would mainly be for a passive slot for the magicka recovery, but it can also help group survivability if they need it.

Minor Brittle

If you’re in charge of keeping up Minor Brittle, then you have two options for setups. The “purely focused on maximizing uptime on Minor Brittle” setup is to double bar ice staves, have your back bar be infused with a frost enchant, have your front bar be charged, and to fit in some extra frost damage skills if you can. This has some drawbacks though, such as losing the debuffs from Pierce Armor (probably the biggest drawback with the debuffs it now gives), less movement speed while blocking, slightly less block mitigation than with a SnB, and giving up an infused Crusher enchant (may not be a big deal if another support can make up for it but it’s a group-by-group case). This means it’s likely not worth it if you’re in a trial situation where you’ll be taunting and holding important enemies as you’ll want the debuffs from Pierce Armor and likely Crusher as well as at all in 4-man content. The more practical, although arguably really annoying and possibly not worth it, setup is to just have your infused frost enchant frost staff on your back bar and keep your SnB on your front bar. You still lose Crusher, so likely still too much of a loss in 4-man content, but you can still keep a SnB. On the flipside of this, you have to either constantly swap to your back bar to reapply it or you lose a lot of uptime on it, potentially not making it worth it to build for it at all. What setup is up to you and your group, so make sure to have this discussion with them beforehand and know what you and them are comfortable with.

Vampire vs. Mortal

With the introduction of Veteran Rockgrove, vampirism is now an option. It’s used for mist form to help you through the DoT on the second boss. It’s basically necessary for the hardmode fight and possible on regular vet to get through without it, but easier if you do.

Champion Points

The list below showcases the order in which champion points should be acquired, the number of points you need to place into that perk and whether or not it needs to be slotted in the CP bar. The Warfare CP perks increase your damage and mitigation and are the most important, the Fitness tree has some miscellaneous sustain and defensive perks and the Craft tree has crafting and non-combat bonuses. The Craft CP points are entirely customizable to however you want, or you can follow the list below.

Other Important Info

Buff Food

Bewitched Sugar Skulls – a ton of stats in all 3 resources, which is just what we need

Mundus

Health is already really high this patch, so I recommend using the Atronach for a significant boost in our magicka recovery. The Steed is also nice if you need the speed.

Race

  1. Nord is #1 for sure. Nice health + Stam stats, ultimate regeneration, and 2.6k resistances combined are amazing. Resistances aren’t exactly needed, but make hitting the cap easier and you don’t have to spend as many resources to get there.
  2. Orc is amazing too. Again nice health + stamina stats, the Sprint passives are great, and a little passive healing.
  3. Imperials are good too. Highest health + stam and some sustain help. The stat difference between them and Nords are 1k health though, and the resistances and ult gen out match the sustain.
  4. Argonian is ok. They have some extra healing and sustain help through their potion passive. Great for beginners but other races are better for higher skill players.

Potions

Essence of Health (Restore Stamina, Magicka and Health)
(Bugloss, Columbine and Mountain Flower)

Passives

  • Class (all)
  • One Hand and Shield (all)
  • Destruction Staff
    • All EXCEPT Tri-Focus (if using ice staff)
  • Heavy Armor (all)
  • Fighter’s Guild
  • Mages Guild
    • All EXCEPT Might of the Guild
  • Undaunted (All)
  • Racial (All)

Because it’s a tank build, there really isn’t a rotation. You’ll just want to make sure you keep up your buffs up, taunt on bosses and dangerous adds, and Elemental Blockade up and positioned correctly to proc Crusher on priority targets. Also, you pretty well always use Warhorn. Only use Magma Shell if absolutely necessary.

Sustain Tips:

  • HA into Igneous will give you back a nice burst of stamina
  • Using Balance and Igneous, you can turn Health into Magicka and Magicka into Stamina. Keep this in mind.
  • Using an ult will give you back a ton of resources through the Battle Roar passive. This is a huge part of your sustain so don’t hold your ults if you don’t need to. The Battle Roar passive is also based on an ultimate’s original cost, so running something like Akaviri Dragonguard won’t affect it.

General Tips:

  • Igneous needs to be used at least once every 20 seconds to keep the Mountain’s Blessing procced for Minor Brutality (if you’re not using Stone Giant ofc, which will definitely be used more often). Taking advantage of the ult gained from the other part of that passive is also really nice, but can be expensive if you’re relying on Igneous to proc it.
  • Igneous into Green Dragon Blood is an expensive combo but very potent for healing. Hitting Igneous once right before a big damage mechanic happens to have the Major Mending active throughout it is very useful.
  • If you’re using Stone Giant, you only need to use the skill once to keep the stacks up after they’re at max. It’s expensive to get them there but not too bad to keep them there. You’ll still need to be watching your stam more than normal though and likely have to use more HAs for stam return.
