Re: NYC - LDN >> Advice Please

Some companies will charge by volume, some by weight. Either way is fine, as long as you know what the charge will be over the quoted volume or weight.

A 20 foot container can hold about cubic feet, so anyone that quoted for a specific volume in the container, you need to ask the per cubic foot charge, and how much is a full container (each company rates them a little differently, between and ).

As for weight, generally household goods are about LBS per cubic foot, however a lot of books can throw that off (books are about 35 LBS per cubic foot). If someone is quoting by weight, ask if you can get a "cap" in case the actual weight is over the estimated weight.

If you go as part of a consolidated load, your goods should be loaded into wooden crates. So cubic feet of goods will end up as about cubic feet once loaded into the wooden crates. This is why Moveage is quoting a higher volume than the people going as FCL.

If you take an exclusive use container, the extra charge for weight or volume will be less than if you go as part of a consolidated load, so that may make a difference. Also, if the container is being loaded right at your home, you'll know when it is full (people have a tendency to take things last minute that they didn't show the surveyor, so this is a way to limit yourself).

I don't see that any of the quotes show the cost of storage - make sure you find that out, in advance. It is normal that there would be a handling fee (loading the goods into/out of the warehouse), a monthly storage fee, and a fee for extending the Marine Insurance while the goods are being stored (most policies include storage in transit, but not storage at the customer's request, however each policy differs).

I don't see the cost of insurance - depending on the value of the shipment, this may be a factor. It is normal for a shipment of this size to need $$50K of insurance, so the cost of insurance is worth considering.

When checking the pricing, check what is NOT included. This may well be an indication of why some companies seem higher than others. I suggest copying and pasting the "Not Included" section of each quote here so I can help point out things you may not know to look for.

Likewise, anything can be done for less money - just do it cheaper. Good employees get paid more than bad ones. Good packing materials cost more than bad ones. Good service is more expensive to provide than bad service. Likewise, as I mentioned above, Flat Rate is charging more on a per cf basis because they are putting you into a 20 foot exclusive use container. I'm sure it will be much less than the $ Moveage wants (since many costs are already included - like the trucking, the ocean freight, etc).

I'm not sure how many boxes you need packed, however $ for packing of boxes and materials for this much volume seems about right. Don't forget that it's not just the labor, but also the materials, and most importantly, the knowledge. If you've never been taught how to pack for an international shipment, you don't know how. This is why Insurance won't cover your dishes being broken if you pack them, but they will if the pros do it. This isn't a trip across town, or even across country - this is international. If you think there is any way to gently put down a 10 ton metal box, you're wrong. And the trucks these containers rid eon aren't the "Air Ride" trucks that good interstate movers use - they are freight trucks with freight truck suspensions. I won't even get into the sail itself - it's not a car ride.

Let's start by seeing what the costs for storage there are, what is and is not included on each quote, and the costs for insurance, and we can start to see the differences.

From reviews of people moving from country to country, we concluded that the market average costs are around $ when moving internationally.

For Viking International Movers, we estimate that their average country to country moving costs will be around $, based on 22 international moving reviews.

This could mean that country to country moving services costs of Viking International Movers is more expensive with about 1% from the market average.

Note that these international moving prices vary from the prices you will get if you contact the company, since these costs are extracted solely from reviews data and not the moving company. In addition, move prices can vary greatly because of factors like home size and distance between locations as well as supplemental services like packing and assembly. This is why you should compare competing moving quotes from international movers with our tool here.

I dealt with John at Viking international moving, and once he was in possession of my items, things were handled EXTREMELY unprofessionally. At the beginning of the process, I was expected to fill out several forms with all the necessary information, most importantly, where the items were going and who was receiving the items. Due to the sheer incompetency of processing, the airway bill (shipment tracking document) was filled out with the wrong name for the consignee (person who received the items), in spite of me having filled out those forms diligently, which would’ve left my items unable to be picked up at customs if it weren’t for me catching the error. However, I caught the error and amended the paperwork (and John assured me that the changes and corrections would be reflected). Once my items arrived at the destination (8 days ahead of schedule), I received an abrupt and curt email from John asking for an explanation as to why my items hadn’t been picked up and that I would be facing exorbitant storage charges at the airport. I was never informed that they were ready for pickup from neither Viking nor their local agent until six days after the items arrival. When I asked John why I was not notified of the items arrival, he said, “tracking your items is not my job.” After speaking with customs, I discovered that the consignee not notified because the shipment was sent with the wrong (original and not amended) airway bill/paperwork with the wrong consignee and contact information, meaning that even tracking my items was an impossible task.

This was an extremely frustrating and lengthy process that would’ve been made a lot simpler by the number of other companies. I would advise anyone to stay away from Viking as they care more about the money than customer satisfaction. For every time they tell you not to worry and that it’ll all be handled, you should be worried and expect things to not be handled.

Viking International Moving

K.M.

Recently moved from NYC to England. Price was reasonable compared to other companies around. The movers who took care of the first half of the move were very polite, and worked quick. I needed a few pieces of furniture taken apart so they arrived with their full tool set. My place was left very clean as well (they swept after all boxes and furniture was loaded up). I received the entire shipment a week earlier than expected which was quite a nice surprise. I planned for this move to take over a month and took just under a month. Thanks Viking for making this painless.

Horrible experience. Spent thousands of additional dollars! Lack of communication. Lack of effort. Complete scam. Hired this company
For door to door service and basically they made a verbal agreement, I had a recorded phone call. Took over a month to receive my items. Made several
Request for receipts. All I got was nasty response and no answers.
Not helpful at all. Worse experience. Very unprofessional across the board.

Recently our family completed a move from Queens, NY to Melbourne, Australia. Needless to say, it was an unbelievably exciting and tremendously stressful time for us. We chose Viking International mostly for their follow-up after my initial call -- we just felt a sense of confidence and comfort that the other providers didn't give us. It was a gut thing, but it wound up being exactly what we needed. What could have been a source of incredible stress went remarkably smoothly. NOT ONE single thing was broken. They didn't spill a Lego. I'm offering this review because, frankly, that shocked the heck out of me. Bottom line, the service was great. All of our calls and emails were answered immediately. Everything happened right on time. The crews were polite, capable and respectful (and really important for me, they kept things light on the packing and moving days -- some of the most anxiety-inducing days of my life). With so much of our lives in upheaval, not having to worry about our stuff was a gift.

We were lucky enough to find Viking International Movers. First made arrangements to come out and look at all of our stuff, what was going to be moved and how large a container we would need and to provide a quote. Not just any quote but one that proved to be spot-on. The movers were wonderful and very knowledgeable about international moves. Everythingbut everything arrived in perfect condition. The container actually arrived much sooner than we had been expecting it. The German shippers contacted had arranged all of the paperwork for customs, etc. and had a local mover all lined up to pick up our container at the port and deliver it to our home. The container had been sealed at our house in Brooklyn and the seal was cut by German movers here. The movers unpacked the container and moved everything inside and put things where we wanted them. We chose not to have the boxes opened because we were still remodeling our house, but they would have also done that. They were wonderful.

I was very disappointed with the way they handled my shipments. We had to buy 2 shipments because the 1st shipment was not packed right. The notice that the shipment had arrived was not true. The agent didn't put the correct name on the Bill of Laden so we had to pay Viking and Egypt for the name change. Getting the corrected Bill of Ladens took over a week. And we still haven't gotten our things.
