'Pokémon Sword and Shield' Apricorn Guide: How to Make Special Pokeballs

The Johto region added Apricorn Pokeballs, one of the coolest features to the Pokémon series and they are making a return in The Isle of Armor DLC.

These special Pokeballs gave trainers a better chance at catching certain Pokémon, but in later generations became a great way to showcase your Pokémon in battle. In Sword and Shield, having Pokémon in special Pokeballs is on full display in the Dynamax cutscene in battles.

While the Apricorn Pokeballs were limited to mystery gifts and the Pokeball Guy giving one of each during the story to trainers, The Isle of Armor DLC gives trainers more opportunities to get more.

Trainers will need access to the Cram-o-Matic machine and a little luck, but the Apricorn Pokeballs can be crafted in the DLC. Here's a handy guide to help you do it.

HOW TO OBTAIN APRICORNS

Apricorns can be found as a hidden item on the floor usually near trees. You can also find some by shaking berry trees, but that's not guaranteed.

There is also an NPC who will give you four apricorn in exchange for 100 Watts. However, her location on The Isle of Armor changes every day and the apricorn she gives is random.

CREATING APRICORN POKEBALLS

To create Apricorn Pokeballs, trainers will need to use the Cram-o-Matic in the main dojo. You'll gain access to the Cram-o-Matic by talking to Hyde (Honey's son) in the dojo and give him the Watts he needs to power his machine.

Once the Cram-o-Matic is up and running, you can feed it up to four items to have it spit out a new item.

In regards to the Apricorn Pokeballs, trainers simply have to feed it up to four of the color-specific apricorns to receive one of the special Pokeballs. However, the Pokeball that is spit out depends on the color of the apricorn and is random. The more apricorns you put in, the higher the chance of getting an Apricorn Pokeball.

Trainers can put different colored apricorn in the mix at the same time, but the odds of which Pokeball comes out will be split. For example, if you put two apricorn (one of each color) the odds of getting a Pokeball from their group will be 50 percent.

Here's a list of the Pokeballs created by feeding the Cram-o-Matic apricorns with the percentage of when they appear.

Apricorn

Apricorns (Japanese: ぼんぐりのみBonguri Fruit) are fruits native to the Johto region that can be used to make Poké Balls. They can also be found in the Kanto region in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver and on Galar's Isle of Armor in Pokémon Sword and Shield's The Isle of Armor expansion.

Specialists can hollow out Apricorns and fit them with special devices to allow them to function as Poké Balls. Kurt is one such specialist. Before Poké Balls became standardized, everyone used hollowed-out Apricorns to catch Pokémon. The process used to create the Poké Balls was developed sometime between 400 and 700 years before the present day.

Because the outer skin of Apricorns are so tough, they cannot be eaten by Pokémon unprocessed. Instead, Trainers can blend Apricorns in an Apriblender to make Aprijuice for their Pokémon to drink.

List of Apricorns

In the core series games

Mechanics

Apricorns can be turned into Apricorn Poké Balls. In Pokémon Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold, and SoulSilver, the player can given Apricorns to Kurt in Azalea Town, who will have turned them into Poké Balls by the next day. In Pokémon Gold and Silver he can only craft one Poké Ball at a time, whereas in subsequent games he can craft any number of the same Poké Ball at once.

Additionally, in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, they can be blended using an Apriblender to make drinks which improve a Pokémon's performance for Pokéathlon competitions. The color of the Apricorns corresponds to their flavor and associated performance stat, with the White and Black Apricorns affecting all stats.

In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver only, Apricorns cannot be held, in order to prevent them being traded to Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum (where they do not exist). In these games, Apricorns are placed in the Apricorn Box (a Key Item that functions like a pocket) instead of the Bag's Items pocket. However, a Pokémon caught in an Apricorn Poké Ball can be traded to Pokémon Diamond, Pearl or Platinum, although the Pokémon's Poké Ball will appear as a standard Poké Ball in those games.

In Pokémon Sword and Shield, using the Expansion Pass the player can go to the Isle of Armor. Inside the dojo on the Isle of Armor, in Mustard's room, the player can find the Cram-o-matic, a robot resembling a Cramorant, made by Mustard's son Hyde. It can be fed four Apricorns to create a random Poké Ball, which is determined by the combination of Apricorns put in.

Acquisition

The group of Apricorn trees on Route 37in Generation II
The group of Apricorn trees on Route 37in Generation IV

The primary method of obtaining Apricorns is from Apricorn trees. These trees yield one Apricorn per day. In the Generation II games, only one of each Apricorn is available per day, from the Apricorn trees on Routes37 and 42 and in Azalea Town.

In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, Apricorns are much more widely available. Locations that contained Berry trees in Generation II now contain Apricorn trees instead, sometimes with the number of trees also being increased. Green Apricorns are by far the most common, appearing in eight places; while White and Red Apricorns are the least common, each only appearing in three places.

In The Isle of Armor, Apricorns are obtained by shaking Berry Trees across the island or by exchanging Watts.

Apricorn is a possible ingredient that can be obtained by completing expeditions. It can also be obtained randomly by recycling Power Stones.

In the anime

Apricorns made their only major anime appearance in Going Apricorn!. After Kurt had given Ash, Misty, and Brock a Fast Ball each, made from White Apricorns growing next to his house, he sent them to collect other Apricorns with Maizie. After several failed attempts at picking Apricorns, the group managed to pick two Blue Apricorns and a Black Apricorn, which Kurt used to make a pair of Lure Balls and a Heavy Ball for them, which they obtained shortly before leaving Azalea Town in the next episode.

In An Egg Scramble!, Yellow Apricorns were one of the things Khoury was selling at the Johto Festival.

Pokémon Adventures

Gold, Silver & Crystal chapter

Apricorns were first seen in Teddiursa's Picnic, where Kurt's ability to turn them into special Poké Balls was demonstrated. Gold, unaware of Apricorns' true purpose, attempted and failed to eat one from a tree.

In Yikes, It's Yanma!, an Apricorn lottery was used to randomly decide which pairs of Gym Leaders from Kanto and Johto would face each other in an interregional exhibition tournament at Indigo Plateau. Erika and Pryce, due to their statuses as the leaders of their respective region's Gym Leaders, were automatically selected to battle each other.

HeartGold & SoulSilver chapter

In Out-Odding Oddish, Gold was seen running around the Pokéathlon Dome to make Aprijuice out of Apricorns with his Apriblender.

Name origin

The word Apricorn may be a combination of "apricot" and "acorn".

Bonguri may come from the Japanese chestnut, known as にほんぐり (nihonguri), or from the acorn, どんぐり (donguri).

Trivia

  • In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, Apricorns have different sprites for the Apricorn Case and the Bag. In these games, the Bag sprites are only used in the point-exchange menu at the Pokéathlon Dome.
  • In the anime, possibly as a coloring error, Black Apricorns were portrayed as being brown-colored.
  • Because of the length of the word "Apricorn", only the Red Apricorn is able to have its full color name in English prior to Generation VI, with the other six having abbreviated versions because item names are limited to 12 characters (including spaces). Starting in Generation VI, item names can be longer, and the Apricorns are all spelled out in full in English (although they were not made available until Generation VIII). In all generations in Japanese, abbreviation is used only for the Green Apricorn, which uses みど mido as an abbreviated form of みどり midori, green.
  • In Generation IV, if an Apricorn tree is left bare and on-screen without turning the game off over midnight, the plant will sparkle (in the same way Berry plants do when advancing a stage) and an Apricorn will appear on it. If the game was in sleep mode (the Nintendo DS was closed) over midnight, this will happen as soon as the game is taken out of sleep mode.

Pokemon Sword/Shield New fastest way to get apricorns/Johto balls In Crown Tundra DLC

Pokémon Sword and Shield’s Isle of Armor expansion finally allows players to get more rare Poké Balls. You can do this using Apricorns.

Apricorns are ball-like fruit found around the Isle of Armor from shaking trees. Certain biomes on the island produce specific Apricorns.

Once you get a bunch of Apricorns, you’ll want to take them to the Cram-o-matic at the dojo. This unlocks shortly after you first arrive at the dojo and it’s sitting in the room to the right. You’ll have to supply the Cram-o-matic with four items in order to get one randomly.

The more Apricorns of a specific color you put into the machine, the higher chance you’ll have to get the rare ball counterpart. If you put in four Apricorns of one color, you’ll have a 1% chance to get the rare ball for that respective color. You’ll also have a 0.1% chance to get a Safari Ball or a Sport Ball.

Note that there is a very high chance that you’ll end up with Poké Balls, Great Balls, Quick Balls, and other Poké Balls you can get at the store. If you’re looking for rare Poké Balls specifically, you’ll need a lot of Apricorns.

You can see what Apricorn colors you’ll need to get the respective rare ball below.

  • Red Apricorns: Level Ball
  • Yellow Apricorns: Moon Ball
  • Green Apricorns: Friend Ball
  • Blue Apricorns: Lure Ball
  • Pink Apricorns: Love Ball
  • Black Apricorns: Heavy Ball
  • White Apricorns: Fast Ball

Now discussing:

How to make every new Poké Ball in Pokémon: Isle of Armor

The very special Apricorn Balls return to Pokémon Sword and Shieldfor the first time since the Johto games, Heart Gold and Soul Silver, making them a hot commodity for social currency like Shiny Raid fees. With the recently released Isle of Armor expansion, Apricorn Balls are more farmable than ever before.

Here's how to craft Apricon Balls, along with Safari and Sport Balls.

How to farm Apricorns in Isle of Armor

To make Apricorn Balls and the various other special balls, you first need to collect Apricorns, multi-colored berry-like items found around the island.

There are two methods you can use to obtain them. You can shake berry trees that you spot on your travels. Each shake has a chance of garnering you an Apricorn of any color or a berry. You can always shake a berry tree at least once before it starts to produce a wiggle of its own. This wiggle means that you've begun to disturb the Pokémon living in the tree. Time every shake after the first during that wiggle's lull to continue harvesting the tree. If a Pokémon attacks you from being too rough with the tree, you'll lose all your produce.

The second method is to speak to a woman (pictured below) in a blue shirt found around the Isle of Armor. For 100 Watts, which you can farm rather easily, she'll give you four Apricorns of the same color. She'll begin facilitating this trade after you've seen every Pokémon in Isle of Armor'sPokédex. Until then, she'll show you a Pokémon you haven't seen when you interact with her. To expedite the time taken to see every Pokémon, make sure you speak to Hop in the dojo every day. Hop also tries to help by showing you new Pokémon.

Once you've collected at least four Apricorns, you can try your hand at creating Apricorn Balls. Head to the Cramo-o-matic in the dojo, the mechanical marvel that looks just like a Crammorant found to the right of Honey.

How to properly use the Cramo-o-matic

Isle of Armor's new crafting system has tons of uses. You can use it to combine four of the same high-value item like Pearls, Nuggets, and Star Pieces to always earn the step up from those, being Pearl Strings, Big Nuggets, and Star Dust, respectively. You can also combine four Bottle Caps (which each max out IVs on a single stat) to make a Gold Bottle Cap that can be used to max IVs out on every stat.

Most importantly, you can use the Cramo-o-matic to obtain special balls like Apricorn Balls, Sport Balls, and Safari Balls. The success rate of this process isn't as clear obtaining single items, but it's doable nevertheless. Thanks to YouTuber AustinJohnPlays and Pokémon mega-site Serebii, there are concrete details on how this process works.

Firstly, you need four Apricorns of any color to start the crafting process. Each Apricorn color has access to a distinct possible ball result pool. The more Apricorns you use of the same color, the higher likelihood that if you do get an Apricorn ball it will be one from that color's pool. Additionally, it's believed that every Apricorn combination has an equal chance to create either a Sport or Safari Ball. You can see the entire combination chart below. The Cramo-o-matic's result will exude a shiny aura if you can successfully produce an Apricorn Ball.

Using this, you should eventually be able to obtain the Apricorn Ball of your dreams. If this seems too hectic, an alternative method is to consciously beat the Elite Four. Each time you emerge victorious, there's a random chance that you'll receive an Apricorn ball. The Pokémon Company is also known to occasionally distribute Apricorn Balls. If you're patient your desired balls will arrive, eventually.

Pokémon: Isle of Armor is now available for Nintendo Switch.
