Introduction

The mid-size Chevrolet TrailBlazer, which went on sale in , is built on a body-on-frame platform, a manufacturing method that has fallen out of favor due to its inherent high weight and trucklike driving experience. So-called crossovers, car-based and unibody SUVs, are quickly causing the extinction of trucks like the TrailBlazer. In fact, may be the TrailBlazer’s last year of production as the unibody-based Chevrolet Traverse crossover is likely to replace the aging ute.

Four-wheel drive is optional on all TrailBlazers, and rear-wheel drive is standard. Structural rigidity is poor, so the chassis is upset by road imperfections, and the steering requires constant corrections. This criticism applies to a lesser extent to the hp SS model, thanks to the SS’s revised suspension and steering rack that give it a sportier and better feel than the regular TrailBlazer. The TrailBlazer is closely related to the Saab X and GMC Envoy and differs from them only in appearance and tuning.

For , the TrailBlazer offers two trim levels—LT and SS—with different equipment packages dubbed 1LT, 2LT, 3LT, 1SS, and 3SS. Three engines are offered in the TrailBlazer: a hp, liter inline-six; a hp, liter V-8; and the SS’s liter V-8 with horsepower. All engines connect to a four-speed automatic transmission. A long-wheelbase EXT version was discontinued a couple of years ago. The TrailBlazer offers a good amount of space for passengers and cargo, but it has one of the cheapest-looking interiors in the automotive world.

Major competitors to the TrailBlazer include the Honda Pilot, Ford Explorer, Mercury Mountaineer, GMC Envoy, Saab X, Mazda CX-7, Nissan Xterra, Nissan Pathfinder, Toyota 4Runner, and Toyota Highlander.

Verdict

After factoring in the inevitable incentives that accompany the TrailBlazer, it has a decent amount of equipment and is somewhat of a good value, but the interior and the driving experience place it at the bottom of its class. The SS model transcends its plebeian roots, however, and will provide some serious acceleration, handling, and grins.

The next step up is the LT with the 2LT package that costs $30, for the 2WD version and $32, for 4WD. In addition to the standard equipment that comes on the 1LT model, 2LT models get dual-zone automatic climate control, rear-seat air conditioning and heat, a rear cargo mat, an overhead console, a trip computer, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, heated power side-view mirrors, leather seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, a programmable garage-door opener, and inch aluminum wheels with a bright finish.

Moving up to the 3LT level ($32,, 2WD; $34,, 4WD) of the TrailBlazer LT brings everything from the 2LT and adds a Bose audio system, two-position memory for the driver’s seat, heated front seats, turn-signal lights on the side-view mirrors, an eight-way power front passenger’s seat, and inch polished aluminum wheels.

Shoppers interested in the powerful SS will have to pony up $32, for a 2WD version and $34, for one with 4WD. The 1SS is the base SS and starts with the standard equipment from the 1LT and adds a hp, liter V-8; sport suspension tuning; inch polished aluminum wheels; a six-disc in-dash changer; rear-seat audio controls and headphone jacks; a rear limited-slip differential; and SS interior trim.

For those who want luxury and power, the TrailBlazer SS’s 3SS level offers everything from the 1SS trim level (there is no 2SS) plus rear-seat air conditioning and heat, an upgraded Bose stereo, a rear cargo mat, a trip computer, leather SS upholstery, heated side-view mirrors, power-adjustable pedals, eight-way power front seats, a programmable garage-door opener, and two-position memory for the driver’s seat. The sunroof is $ for 2LT buyers, and the following options are also available: an eight-way power front passenger’s seat ($), power adjustable pedals ($), Bose speakers ($), and inch aluminum wheels ($). Buyers in the 3LT bracket face most of the same extra-cost choices as 2LT buyers, but the power front passenger’s seat, the inch wheels, and the Bose speakers become standard equipment. As a result of the latter inclusion, the six-disc changer is also available bundled with the sunroof in the Sun and 6-Disc Option package for $ Navigation is available for $

Options for the 1SS version of the TrailBlazer SS include the ashtray and lighter, six-disc in-dash changer, Bose stereo system ($), power sunroof ($), and side steps. The Sun and Sound package bundles a power sunroof and Bose stereo for $ here, too.

The powerful and luxurious 3SS offers the DVD-based navigation system, the power sunroof ($), the Sun and 6-Disc Option package, the Entertainment package, and the Cargo Convenience package.

Research on Headlight for Chevrolet Trailblazer

Your Chevrolet Trailblazer headlight has an essential role to play in ensuring safe driving conditions. It helps make nighttime driving and visibility safer. Hence, if your Trailblazer headlight is not working properly or not working at all, it can prove to be risky for you and others. Unfortunately, Chevy Trailblazer headlight has been plagued with issues, necessitating a recall from GM.

Chevy Trailblazer Low Beam Not Working

This appears to be a common problem. You will hear nearly every owner complain of their Trailblazer headlights not working, and this problem appears to be restricted to low beam and not the high beam. If you experience this issue, it is best to check the individual fuse of each headlight (Trailblazer low beams have their own fuse on either side with shared relay) and the relay. Replace the faulty fuse and relay and the low beam should work just fine.

Chevrolet Trailblazer Headlight Socket has Melted

Some Trailblazer owners have stated that the low beam headlight socket melts quite frequently. This happens even if the melted socket is replaced. If you experience this problem, opt for high-quality sockets that come with heat-reducing connectors. Many aftermarket and stock headlight sockets do not have this connector and overloading of the circuit causes the sockets to melt.

Just one Chevrolet Trailblazer Headlight is not Working

If you experience this issue, it means the bulb has burned out. Headlight bulbs have a limited lifespan and how long they last depends on the number of hours you use and the vibrations they are subjected to. The filament inside the bulb will ultimately burn, making it necessary for you to replace the bulb.

Chevrolet Trailblazer Headlight is Dim

If you notice that the headlight is dim or the brightness of the headlight alters when the engine is revved, it is a sign that there is a problem with the alternator or the alternator belt drive. You should get a qualified mechanic to check the charging system's voltage when the engine is idle. If the voltage is less than 13 volts, the problem lies with the charging system.

Chevrolet Trailblazer Headlight Recall

In December , General Motors issued a Chevy Trailblazer headlight recall. It was for model years and The auto manufacturing giant stated that in these models the low beam headlights could just stop working. They blamed it on the headlight driver module, which it said was not functioning properly, causing the low beam and daytime running lights to switch off temporarily or permanently.

So if you think your Chevy Trailblazer is covered under this recall, take your vehicle to the nearest Chevrolet dealership.

Cost of Replacing Chevrolet Trailblazer Headlight

The cost of Chevy Trailblazer headlight replacement can vary greatly from place to place. It is also dependent on where you get the headlight replaced - DIY, local garage or the dealership.

If you purchase a halogen bulb, it will vary from $15 to $20 while HID bulb can cost $ or more. On the other hand, if you want to replace the Trailblazer headlight assembly, the cost can vary from $ to $ In addition, there are taxes, fees and labor costs that you need to consider.
