Is GardenTech Sevin OK to Spray on a Vegetable Garden?

Insects and other pests can be ruthless when it comes to attacking vegetable gardens, and safety should always be the priority when choosing effective insecticides. GardenTech Sevin is an insect and pest controller that eliminates more than 500 pests and is sold in different forms. It contains zeta-cypermethrin and works on vegetables and fruit plants, lawns and ornamentals. How safe is it to use, though?

You can spray this product on your garden even if it contains food. However, you should always thoroughly clean any foods that come in contact with insecticide, pesticide or fertilizer.

GardenTech Sevin Insect Killer for Vegetable Gardens

According to Insect Cop, Sevin insecticide is manufactured by GardenTech, which also owns the Advanced, RootBoost, Over’n Out! and Daconil brands. Sevin comes in different forms, including concentrate, spray and dust. The active ingredient, zeta-cypermethrin, is classified as a pyrethroid insecticide.

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension explains that most pyrethroid chemicals have low toxicity for birds and mammals. Pyrethroid insecticides are also fast-acting, and you only need a little bit to control insects. They work especially well on chewing insects but are toxic to fish, so never use them to get rid of insects in water. Pyrethroids work by binding themselves tightly to organic matter and soil and may not be as effective for underground pests.

GardenTech Sevin has just 0.35 percent of zeta-cypermethrin and besides that, this chemical is nonsystemic. So, while it targets insects, it does not penetrate into the vegetable skins; zeta-cypermethrin does not get absorbed into the vegetable tissue and make it unsafe. Still, it is always important to wash off any vegetables or anything else picked from the garden before eating if you have used insecticides or pesticides.

GardenTech Sevin Insect Killer Formulas

GardenTech Sevin concentrate (which is sold in a bottle that is 32 ounces in size) is an economical choice since you will add your own water. It is sold in a bottle designed to make it easy to add the proper amount of insecticide to water. The ratio is up to 4 ounces of Sevin concentrate per gallon. You can then spray this onto the plants with a dial-style, water hose-end or pump sprayer.

GardenTech Sevin ready-to-use insecticide does not require mixing and comes in a 32-ounce spray bottle and gallon-sized containers. This larger container also saves money per unit over the cost of the premixed 32-ounce container. With the bigger container, you can pour what you need into your own spray bottle. Alternatively, you can also try GardenTech Sevin dust, which is also ready to use. This dust is sold in a shaker container and is designed for plants that are smaller than chest height.

About Insecticide Use

Bob Vila advises gardeners to be careful when using insecticides. First of all, it is essential to know what kind of insects are invading in order to choose the right product. The labels show this as well as directions for safe use, and some also specify certain times of the day or season to use them. It is never a good idea to apply insecticides right before or during a rain, as the product can wash off and flow onto other areas, like nearby streams. Do not use insecticides when it is windy outside either because the chemicals can be swept off the plants and travel elsewhere.

As an added precaution, don some protective gear before handling insecticides. If it makes contact with your skin or eyes, you may experience redness, swelling, pain and itching. Wear nonabsorbent gloves and goggles, and if the chemicals cause a serious reaction, contact your local poison control center. You can also play it safe by only testing a bit of the insecticide on one leaf and letting it sit there for a full day. If all is well, apply as directed to the rest of the plant.
