Tecumseh 17hp trouble cranking past compression

Hello,

This is my first technical post here, but I've been playing around with and tweaking small engines since I was a kid. This one has me baffled.

I have a mid-late 90's Yard Machines 662 hydrostatic lawn tractor with a Tecumseh 17hp OHV engine that was given to me with electrical and possible engine problems. There was a short that burned up some wiring, so I simplified the harness, bypassing the safeties and isolating the ignition and starter circuits for troubleshooting.

Currently the engine cranks with the electric start until it hits the compression stroke, then won't push through the compression. It turns freely and easily by hand until it gets to the compression, then it takes everything I can do to get it past the compression.

Things I have done:

- New Battery
- New Starter
- New Starter solenoid
- New Spark plug
- Cleaned wiring connections to battery, solenoid, ground, and starter
- Checked, adjusted, checked, and triple checked valve adjustment

I can get it to barely push past the compression stroke if I assist with my craftsman jump starter hooked directly to the starter, and it does try to fire on starting fluid at that point, but won't hit more than once or twice.

Any ideas on what might cause this? Maybe a stretched connecting rod?

Thanks ahead of time for any help and ideas!

17.5 Tecumseh has spark until it heats up & then the spark quits

Thanks guys. I will focus on the coil shortly.

I have one more weird thing that happen between the time I posted and before I read your responses. I thought the old ignition might have something to do with it so I pulled the wires and tapped on the old ignition. After I re-attached the wires, I turned the ignition key over to check for spark (I still had the plug out and checking for spark that way), the starter motor started running and would not shut off until I pulled the battery cable.

It did not matter where the position of the key was in the switch. Each time I tried to re-attach the battery cable, the starter motor would kick on and stay running until I reomved the battery cable.

OK. So I go out and buy a new matching 6 prong ignition and put it in. As soon as I tried to attach the battery cable, the same thing occurs - the starter motor starts running. I even pulled the wire harness off the ignition switch and then tried to hook up the battery cable - still the same problem. How can that happen if I don't even have the ignition swich hooked up?

Now for the $64,000 dumb question. Is this weird starter motor problem related to the coil problem or is it just my dumb luck that something new is also wrong?

Dave
