But the point is, there is no published recipe, at least on the Alliant site, for a 3/4 oz load in a 12ga using Clay Dot....

Clay Dot is not a smart choice...for a 3/4 oz load...and changing the wad isn't the solution...

If you want to use Clay Dot....then use it per the published recipes at 7/8 oz etc....per the tables is my recommendation.
---------------
Like others advised, make sure you use a good scale to check what a given bushing is dropping ...for any powder....but the only chart I can find for MEC bushings for Clay Dot are:

# 28 15.4 gr
# 29 16.0 gr
#30 16.5 gr
# 31 16.9 gr
# 32 17.4 gr
# 33 18.1 gr
# 34 18.8 gr....

but there is nothing sacred about a # 28 bushing....one #28 may vary as much as 1/2 grain ...over another #28 bushing. They're easy to loosen up, if you want to ...and remark them with a Dremel.

If you have a published recipe for 15.0 gr....I'd start with a # 27 bushing and check it with a scale to see what its dropping...( drop 5 or 6 charges and average them out ).../ but if it varies more than plus or minus 0.1 grain ...then you have other issues.

Tried some of the new 20/28.

Excellent! 15gr in the 20ga with 7/8oz of lead works my Benelli flawlessly.

One of the cleanest powders I've ever used, certainly the cleanest in the 20ga. Amazingly clean.

Slight extra bulk over WSF is no problem. I've loaded AA (both new and old), STS, Gun Club, and some Remington cheapos with six point crimp. All with 15gr 20/28, 7/8oz lead, and the Claybuster AA20 knockoff. Perfect function with all.

This stuff is 10% less than WSF, and uses 10% less charge weight. It's like getting almost two pounds free with an 8lb bottle. Did I mention it's also clean?

Good report, Jones. Is it in any way better than Unique? How clean is it?
Thank you,

It's spotlessly clean, Jim. Cases and hands just have no carbon at all. Barrel looks like it's just been swabbed. Amazing.

I used to use Unique in the 20. I prefer Hercules powders. Still use Red Dot in the 12, just for economy. There are better powders, but Red Dot is cheap and reliable even in cold weather.

Switched to WSF when the AA HS 20ga came along, because I ended up with a couple thousand of them and Unique just would not fit in the case. Crimp was awful, tended to open up in pocket, etc. WSF is very dense, uses #17 MEC bushing and makes a great load with the AA HS. I just started using it for every 20ga target load.

20/28 uses the MEC # 19 bushing, so the load still fits nicely in the AA HS 20ga.

I don't load 28ga. Guessing the stuff would play just fine, but I don't have or want a 28ga gun so no report there.

Help?

Thank you. I don't have a 20 but have used Unique in my 28 from day one. I use 12.5 grains to give me about 1150 fps. I'll compare prices between 20/28 and Unique at my local Sportsman's Warehouse when my Unique runs out.
Thank you,

Jim, I'm currently loading 20/28 in both AAHS and Federal 28ga hulls. 12.2 grains in both. I have used Unique in the Feds with good results. I'd been using Longshot in the AAHS because I had issues with insufficient case capacity for Unique. Compared to Longshot, 20/28 is at least as clean, I use a lighter charge (by about 2 grains), and it's cheaper to start with. Not sure whether there's any savings compared to Unique, but I had been dropping a slightly heavier powder charge (13 grains).

Thanks for the report. I really like SR 7625 in the 28, it's very clean but is expensive. I like the Alliant line of powders and will try it. Buy American when possible.

I just got a catalog from PW and the bushings chart looks like thr bushings for the 20/28 powder are smaller than for Unique. Makes me wonder if the 20/28 powder fills up the 28 ga. shells properly? Any dished crimps? Different wads required?
Thank you,

Sounds like yet another improvement, with the mfg. listening to what bothers some customers and a financial incentive as well. That has the ring of a winning combination.

I have been a Unique user in the 28 [3/4oz std. vel/pressure loads] and the 12 [3 & 1/4DE 1 & 1/4oz. 'pigeon loads' w/#5 shot for duck back when; pheasant today] in Fed hulls for many years [plastic in the 28, paper in the 12], still am.

I have never been bothered by residue in the bbl. or bbls. since the gun is going to be cleaned after each use anyway, but I also know that I am an exception. Almost to a person, folks at my club are not happy about anything that remotely resembles residue. I hear their concern at the cleaning bench, frequently. This new powder should be a great boon to many.

Your noting the improvement in external case mouth cleanliness interests me. I'll also look at it closely, meaning that I'll go buy some based on your experience and see what I can determine difference wise, at the plate too. Thank you for the report!

Jim, I load on a Mec. For me, 20/28 loads a lot like Longshot. That is, you need to use much smaller bushings for the same amount of powder when compared to Unique. Alliant recommended a #15 bushing. I weighed it out and dropped to a #14 to get my 12.2 grain load. I get about 1.5 grains more if I go with a #15. With Unique I'm using a #19 to drop almost the same weight of powder. I've used both the Fed and HS wads in Fed hulls with 20/28, mostly the HS. No issues with dished crimps. I'm just about a grain under what Alliant calls for in the Fed hull, but I'm not getting any funny-sounding loads; no problems breaking targets. I have yet to chrono them to see how close they are to 1200 fps.

The first impulse was to call the police and of course you need to tell Jeff everything. No, wait. You can't tell Jeff that she was fucked by a monster. Yes, and the police, it is also better not to talk about this: firstly, she herself has just washed away all traces, and secondly, Jeff will again become aware of this.

Through the police.
